Ryan Mason

He's only had one full season in the side and that was alongside a similarly inexperienced player. If anyone else was talking like this, about any other player, you would be ridiculing them.

Do not put words into my mouth or try and read my mind. I will say it again i have seen nothing in Mason to show that he is capable of playing at the top table. Now that is my opinion you disagree and that is fine.

Therein lies a bigger question, why is it Mason's first season? He's been loaned out more times than the Kama Sutra from the local library.

I'm not saying that makes Mason any better than he is, just that to compare him to a different positional player is a little unfair or inexact.

Fair enough, however i was not compering the two players against each other just replying to a earlier post by someone who was.

Wasn't trying to have a pop or agitate at you or anyone, just highlighting what I felt was an unbalanced drift to the conversation in general.

OK so comparing apples with apples, Mason played as a striker coming through the ranks and has since dropped into that midfield slot. In the last 5 years (all times when Mason has been out on loan) we have gone through:
Parker
Ceballos
Falque
Holtby
Sigurdsson
Capoue
Paulinho
Stambouli

rather than considering promoting Mason.

And I haven't included those we've kept in Dembele, Chadli, Eriksen and Alli

Surely that must say a little about how Mason has not proven he can make it at a top 4 club. And his loans have all been outside the Premier League so you could argue that he'd struggle outside the top 6 or 8 teams on that basis.

Of course that can just as easily be turned totally on its head, can it not. All those players have come and gone but Mason is here, a key part of a successful squad that has achieved our highest League position in 25 years. :D

And that list is a mix of midfielders and the new position of the 3 behind the striker

Other then Gutter Boy boy, the basin thread has become those who really dont rate him and want him out and those that recognise he isn't a world beater but is a squad player for us who has played a lot of games under Poch

to say he isn't good enough for a top 8 side is weird when factually in the two seasons he had been in and around the first 11 we have been 5th and 3rd!!!

But likewise to call him a top drawer player would be wrong because he clearly isn't. It's gonna be a make or break season for him with us this year IMO. I can't see him displacing the 3 midfielders obviously ahead of him and I can't see Him starting many In the 3 behind the striker... I can though see him playing in 20 odd games

Lets see what he ends up doing at the end of the season and let's judge him them, but please let's not rewrite facts to prove an opinion

Not all players develop at the same rate and our club has hardly been the picture of stability during his time in the youth ranks.

He's had one and a half seasons in our first team, one half when he was decent decent and one injured.

I totally agree I don't sit in the camp off "Mason should be got rid off" but I also don't think he will progress to be the shining star some on here think he'll be.

My concern is where we've sent players like Rose and Pritchard to Premier League teams on loan he's been to Doncaster and Millwall and the question is "why?"

The statistics say other.
8 starts and 14 sub appearances hardly says "key part of a successful squad that has achieved our highest League position in 25 years." to me.

What I want to see from him is for him to have a breakthrough season like Kane had where he emerges as a key part to the team, he has showed glimpses but so far hasn't been consistent or IMHO good enough to hold down a regular starting slot.

Because people didn't know how good he was?!?!

Because at the time premier league clubs weren't lending players to each other

Maybe because the teams that were at the level he was at, at the time played hoofball and wanted a Cattermole style player in midfield

Who knows.... And seriously who cares

I think that our high turnover of managers who were unwilling to trust in our youth players can't have helped either

Kane had similarly underwhelming loans

Yes he did and then came back and had two fantastic seasons. As a Spurs fan I'm hoping Mason proves me wrong and can do the same, all I'm trying to do is lower everyone's expectations that Mason is going to be a world beater with some cruel facts that may (yes only may) prove he's not.
