Rodrigo Bentancur

I think the appeal is bonkers to be honest. He's admitted his guilt (which is pretty undeniable regardless of perceived intent). The offence carries a minimum 6 game ban and he got 7. So best case scenario, I'd have thought, is that the ban gets reduced by 1 game. That's not worth the PR damage and the message that this is sending.
Why is the minimum 6? The Old Farts dont work like that (transparency, consistency or fairness). They just make stuff up as they go along to suit themselves and their paymasters

PR damage is a pretty meaningless term when it comes to football. The amount of 'incidents' our club have had that have apparently been 'bad for PR' that I can't remember now and have had literally zero impact on the club.

The only thing it does is give a portion of angry men something different to whinge about on teletext, of which they would be doing that about something else if not Spurs anyway....

I dont think we ever recovered as a club from Terry Nutkins criticising us on the Really Wild Show in 1990 for Gazza stealing the Emu from London Zoo. We've never been respected since

It’s a terrible decision morally, from a team perspective and from a PR perspective. Evidence of poor decision making in the corridors of power imho.

Luis Suarez was an incredible footballer. One of the best I've seen in the last 20 years. What do I associate him with? Being a biter and a racist.

Kenny Dalglish was an unbelievable footballer and a very successful manager. What's my last memory of him in the game? Wearing that poxy t-shirt defending a racist.

John Terry - one of the best defenders of the Premier League era. To me he's a scumbag who indulged in a lot of questionable stuff including being a racist.

These things stick. From a moral perspective, what we've done is pretty bankrupt.

From a commercial perspective, I doubt Levy has had more sponsors offering him money since last Monday.

I don't think Bentancur is a card-carrying member of the KKK or anything but he said something stupid and racist. He got away with a relatively light punishment given the offence. For our club to appeal that really spits in the face of any of their anti-racism campaigns IMO.

Optically it is a silly thing to do, I agree.

As I posted a while back, the entire process behind this does not feel like it is designed to educate and promote anti-racism more than achieve 'optical approval.' Why did they not use this as an opportunity to provide an EXAMPLE by having Bentancur spaeking with Kick-It-Out and bringing people on the journey of how hurtful even casual racism can be. To your point, Bentancur is not John Terry, but the 'one size generally fits all' approach to punishment versus censure+education will somewhat place him there.
An opportunity missed IMO, but again, yes, the club should've been smarter overall here.

I don't think we should have appeal. Yes it's harsh and yes it's out of order others get away with it.

End of day, spurs didn't deal with it internally. We didn't ban him for a day for Insulting our club captain. We don't know for sure Son was actually alright with it. Yes he apologized, yes everyone says we draw line and move on.

We can argue logistics all we like. But to me it looks bad to argue a punishment length of racism

I think this is bang on. If the league aren't interested in education, we should've acted proactivelty and arranged something in conjunction with Kick it Out. I genuinely believe he made a stupid stupid comment and is not a racist.

What people also haven't realised yet is that Bentancur is on 4 yellows. So he would have inevitably missed one of those 7 games anyway. He now need to be careful that he doesn't come back in the side in December, pick up a yellow and make it 8 games.

Wolves is our 19th game after which there’s no longer an automatic ban for totting up 5 bookings, it’d be Sod’s Law (or some might say karma) we get Bentancur’s suspension reduced to the minimum 6 matches then he returns at Forest on Boxing Day where he gets a 5th yellow.
