Politics, politics, politics

I think a leaver leader with a bit of vision and agency could carry all the Tory/DUP party bar the 10-12 Clarke/Soubrey lot; plus the Bennites in Labour.

That's a slender majority for a Canada deal.

Visionary leaver leader...............reveal yourself??

Plans are being drawn up to issue millions of permits so Britons can drive on EU roads after Brexit.

Up to seven million International Driving Permits could be needed inside a year if the UK and the EU do not agree to mutually recognise licences, the National Audit Office (NAO) says.

The public spending watchdog warned that "detailed delivery plans" had not yet been completed.

But the government told it the project was "deliverable".

And this is another thing that should be simply a non-story.

We have a comprehensive driving test, theory test, and instruction. For what possible reason could this be an issue? And yet - lets all make a drama out of something that shouldnt even come up in the news....

For the billionth time, we are currently part of the EU. This means, unlike other "3rd nation" states, we are actually PERFECTLY aligned with the EU and its standards across the board.

If I am free to go drive in France now, why shouldnt I be next year? Its stupidity like this that really frustrates me. Of all the things we should be worrying about this should be little more than a memo

UK - "So, licences - theres no issue now, lets just recognise each others?"
EU - "Of course. Next...."
I agree, The EU would conversely have to think about EU nationals living and remaining here, and if we need permits then i expect we'd request the same (or similar) but its just unnecessary. There must be so many issues that are easy to agree and almost can continue with no interference.

If we're going to plough through a 1001 issues, rules and regulations etc and tweak, change and rewrite them we better get the public sector/civil servant hiring experts back in power.

I don't think we should measure evil by how successful it's believers are at achieving their aims. Racism is racism - there's no grey scale, it's black and white (for want of a better term).

I dislike extremism from any end of the political spectrum. I dislike the UKIP and BNP racist extremists every bit as much as I do Corbyn and his lot. I don't see any wiggle room in there for accepting any of them.

Very subtle...not! Trying to equate a mainstream democratic socialist, with right wing nut jobs. I don't think so.

Mainstream my arse. He's a hair's breadth from extremism and often associates with them.

That's where my political philosophy appears to differ from most. I won't accept extremists just because they're from "my" half of the political spectrum. Many Labour supporters appear to be perfectly happy to, as long as it gets those evil Tories out of power.

right now they seem to be trying quite hard to keep the tories in power

Just found out something interesting today mate. Scaramanga had a supernumerary nipple. What is your position on tolerance of this particular minority group?

In case you had forgotten, Labour is meant to be a democratic socialist party, so it would not appear to be unreasonable to suppose that the leader would also be a democratic socialist.
He's way left of that and you know it. Everyone who wants him to win is pretending he's less of an extremist than he really is, to ensure all the idiot millennials and those who don't really understand economics vote for him. But not only is he way left of anything Labour has been for a generation, the Overton Window has also shifted in the UK. It's now framed by the (current) Lib Dems on the Left, UKIP on the right and New Labour with the Conservatives scrapping around in the middle. He's a long way outside the Window now, evidenced by the fact that his vote share stays stubbornly low, despite facing the worst Conservative party for about two generations.

Wouldn't the issue be that we would have to Allience ourselves to EU standards. IE. The EU will say of course next, as long as we agree to keep the same standards. This is the issue across the board. The more we commit to keeping the same standards/regulation as the EU the easier the negotiations. However it raises the point of.... What's the fudging point of Brexit?

As I said earlier, nobody should be abused or attacked, I believe that is wrong. I also believe that it is "more wrong" to abuse or attack someone for being a member of what I consider a protected class - that of their race, gender, sexuality, etc.

Can't help but use a football analogy in Random, so sorry about this. Footballers call each other clams all the time. We've all done it on the pitch and all been on the receiving end too. It shouldn't happen, we'd all prefer it didn't happen but it does. But when John Terry calls Anton Ferdinand a black clam, that's something altogether different.

Now as I've also said in this thread, when someone identifies as Jewish, it's a little different. Because of what has happened in their history, "Jewish" no longer just means someone who subscribes to Judaism as a religion. It can mean someone from that religion, someone of Jewish descent, someone who is a part of the Jewish culture, or often just someone from Israel. Where Islamic and Arabic (as one of many examples) are distinctions along which we can divide religion from genetics, Jewish and Jewish are currently inseparable. If someone attacked your aunt with the intent of insulting her religion then, as distasteful as that is, it's of the lesser category of "badness" in my opinion. If they attacked her religion in an attempt to attack Jewish people as a genetic or cultural group, then what they did was in the bigger bad category.

*There is sill a ginger and scouse exemption from protected groups - nobody want those genes spreading.

What genes? What race? There is only one race. the human race. And thats not me talking some extreme liberal flimflam. To talk of races is to talk of aliens and humans... Or humans and chimps.

It's stinks of so called scientific racism and divides us more than religion ever did, without any of the redeeming features religion has.

WTF are you talking about?

Do we do that with the US? I can use my driving license there.

No, it wouldnt.

Are our standards the same now within the EU? The same as the States? or anywhere else in the world where licences are recognised? Id suggest not, and yet we still recognize licences from these places.

There are things where common sense really need apply.

We have driving licence standards that are acceptable to the EU. But if Brexit happens and in 5 years our standards fall below what the EU deem as acceptable. Then that will be a problem for them. So if we want to use our licences in the EU, we have to agree to keep the same standards to prevent this problem.

If we don't agree to do this... No problem.. you can't drive in the EU... It's their right to do this as it is our right to do the same.

This is a microcosm of the whole EU negotiations.

If we want the benifits of the EU then we have to stick to their rules... If we don't want to do that then we lose those benifits.

Quite. But most importantly, if we want to drop our standards we can. That way the only people who need to go through the bureaucracy are those who actually want to get the benefit of driving in the EU.

You're right, it is a microcosm of the EU negotiations. Currently everyone has to align with the EU for the tiny minority that it actually benefits.
