OMT - TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs Man U

He didn't really stand out as having a bad game to me, wasn't great but thought he done ok

Good to see Lennon play so well though and i thought Paulhino looked good too

I thought he was really poor mate, might have just been my perspective from where I was sitting in the ground but he does look like a player that isn't going to make it here. He hasn't had many chances but when he has played I have been distinctly underwhelmed. I would say that he looks to me like he plays the game the way the team is playing currently - methodically and slowly

From thereon Lloris slides into his path, but would not have impeded him if he'd run like a normal human being instead of dragging his foot along the ground.

Some of the negativity in this thread is close to unbelievable.

Good performance from the lads, unlucky not to win. Hopefully we'll see the team bring some of the stuff they showed today into the next couple of games too.

Re the Lennon sub - if you're bringing on Townsend to play RW that means Lennon will go left - where he is ineffective

So why not take Chadli off who was very ineffective, play townsend on the left - he is left footed and leave the one player who can run off the ball on the pitch for the last 15 minutes?
Poor decision imo

I dont think some of you were watching Chadli. Only 2 players completed more passes than the guy Walker and Vertonghen. He had 25 to Lennon's 8.
Lennon started well but couldnt get into the game at times.
Lennon's last pass attempt came before the 35th minute. That's 30 minutes he was on the pitch without trying to pass the ball before AVB took him off.

Interesting.

I thought Chadli looked quite good, better in the first half than in the second. Lennon was sharp and looked threatening, but I can see the logic of bringing in Townsend against when United were tiring a bit to give him the chance to run at them. Just a shame Townsend didn't have a good day at the office, had he been as sharp as he was against Chelsea for example he could have given Evra and United a real hard time.

I felt that Wellbeck was looking to mug the ref and did a great job. He was going down well before any contact was made, you have to question whether the contact was enough to take him down also.
Utd are making a habit of doing this - I think it's called cheating!

OK so he made passes, what if 18 of those were backwards? Would that change how effective he was?

I see we are still using this, rather loose and, unrepresentative term. Now that's pretty close to unbelievable.

Was a good performance compared to our ****e prior... but like I have always said you dont judge ONE game but a trend of games... lets evaluate whether things have turned or not in the next few games

We are back to the old chestnut of looking at stats and in particular one stat passing. Lennon may have passed fewer times but his movement and play was much more threatening which we have lacked when we have struggled to score. Lennon represented a better chance of scoring and he puts in a good defensive shift. Too

What if a snake had legs? Why not look at what he actually did instead?

The point was that he was getting involved. I don't think anyone is saying that he was super effective, but he had some good involvements I thought.

The stats presented by Modric THFC also said something about Lennon perhaps drifting out of the game? So easy to get blinded by what happens early in the game and assume that this continues to be true, based on those stats it seems to me that AVB made a decent decision.

I think he would have been more effective today and given us better defensive balance than leaving Chadli on. He ball watched all day and for a guy as big as he is, he does not like physicals one little bit or going up for a header.

Ball watched? He stuck to Smalling when united were attacking so Valencia couldn't play an out ball to him.
The guy made 2 interceptions. Only player who made more interceptions was Sandro and Vertonghen.
He constantly got back and worked his **** off. He wasnt his fault Valencia could beat Vertonghen with ease.

I cant think were you;ve got the idea that Townsend is the better defensive player

I thought most of utd's threat came down chadli's side?

How is the term unrepresentative?

Let's evaluate over the next few games, fair enough. That is quite different from what I was referring to. If you don't think some of the negative comments in this thread have been over the top then fine, whatever...

Personally I was surprised by that stat, I could have sworn that Lennon had been more involved than that and actually doing stuff on the ball. But I'm well aware that my memory is far from flawless. That to me makes a stat like that interesting.

I don't think anyone is saying that this particular stat is the answer to everything, but it's another piece of information and for me at least worth bringing up. It's not an old chestnut, if you don't want to discuss things based on stats at all I suggest you ignore all posts containing stats as it's something others do want to discuss.

Perhaps youre right but its the damnest thing affecting our club this season overeliance on stats rather than what's going on in front of our very eyes.

But Modric THFC was also talking about what he and others had seen in the game. He then pointed out two pieces of stat. Is that over reliance on stats?

I don't see quite what effect it has on the club, but on this site at least it seems that there's barely a stat that can be posted without someone complaining about it.

I know for myself at least that I'm very emotional during games, I frequently have a couple of beers, obviously talking to friends and getting distracted from the game in that and other ways. I can generally see what goes on in front of my eyes, but I also accept that my perception with be just that - a perception, not a true reflection of what actually happened. I think some stats can be quite literally eye opening in this regard, it brings a bit more information to a conversation is all. Doesn't mean that what we see with our eyes is disregarded or that you have to rely heavily on a single stat.

The problem with that is that things get interpreted differently by each of us.

I thought Chadli played well, but United's right side was their main attacking threat and putting Townsend on the left would have been suicidal.

There is always the possibilty that the threat of Townsend's direct running down the left might have pegged Manure back and eased up the pressure on Verts.
