OMT - TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs Man U

My observations.

POSITIVE
Higher intensity.
Dembele showed up.
Better movement.

NEGATIVE
Another brainfart that gifts a goal to opposition.
Passing went pear shaped in second half.
Ian Darke was willing the ball into the United net every time they went forward. He is such a prat.

In fairness Welbeck is a poor player, he didnt have the ability to score as proved by his record but he is crafty and waited for any touch to go down and by touch he basically kicked the hands of Loris after Loris failed to take him down after his first touch. Football is a girly sport though and it was a pen in todays world.

I thought it was a pen but coulda gone either way. Owen alluded to it but Welbeck did what Lennon shoulda done i.e. take an extra touch.

On another point - I thought the ref was very ****ing good today.

yep would have been a clear pen had he not crossed it.

The ref got lots of abuse incorrectly tbf, at times the crowd screamed for a free and when he tried to play advantage and then called it back, the crowd wanted him to let play go on?? I only got to see the 2nd half but I couldnt see any clanger there that would lead me to think he was favouring the opposition.

I have to give it to Mike Dean, I usually hate him as a ref, but today he actually came out quite good. Sure, he could have given a few more yellows, but in such a high intensity game it could easily ended up with a card frenzy.

He got the major decisions right. Still behaves like a bell-end thought.

A much better performance than recent games; I thought Walker was man of the match for tireless running, good balls in, attacking their defence, his freekicks, his goal, his defending... but of course he should have realised that Dawson might not header the ball away so that was a bad mistake.

Frustrating to see Lloris come steaming out when Welbeck was running away from goal, there was no way on earth Welbeck could score from there running at that speed on his left foot. That was worse than Walker's mistake.

Otherwise we did well considering we had to play a centre back at left back yet again.

On another note not really connected to todays game, why dont we have more ball boys? Even though we have a tight ground, so much of the game is wasted by players waiting to take throws etc just waiting to get the ball wheter intentionally or not. We complain about intensity but lose out when the ball goes out of play.

That was a very good decision by Mike Dean, just because you retain possession of the ball doesn't neccessarily mean that you've got an advantage.

The ref was fantastic imo.

Agreed. Let the game flow (no bad thing) and got most of the decisions spot on. Last-minute corner for United was a bit of a negative (he looked like he'd made up his mind to give a goal kick, only for Cleverley to lope across and absolutely hound him into awarding a corner), but overall, a very good game from Mike Dean.

Well I beg to disagree. In some games he has been adequate, but even to agree, given our performanbces that is not saying much

Enjoyed watching that. Jumped out of my seat about 3 times.

But IMO our line up showed United too much respect. Lennon bright 1st half but faded badly. The booing of the Townsend sub made my blood boil. He was unnerved by that and his ball control was uncharacteristically poor. But he still managed to get in passes into the box when there were 2 or more guys there and a better ball from Walker and he scores the winner.
Soldado was poor yet again apart from that great ball to Lennon and he gets an ovation. Go figure.
A better team put out today and we win the game.
We are 10 points behind Arsenal so that dream is over.

It was a pen but the goalie should not be giving the forward the opportunity to go over him.
Who made the crunching tackle before that ball went upfield to the United guy? Can't remember who made the poor pass to nobody that led to the tackle, either.

Well it was a point gained, but thats about it. Apart from 2 great strikes (one simply brilliant and one down to poor defending on the free kick) did we learn a single positive thing in terms of AVB's "supposed" vision or style of play to give us renewed hope for the rest of the season. Not for me im afraid.

Yet more baffling team selections, and even worse subs, realy does make you wonder what the hell is going on. How do you take of Lennon and leave the awful Chadli on the pitch ? How do you then take of Soldado who has crippling low confidence and leave the awful Chadli on the pitch. Could he not have played 2 up front just for that last bit of the game ? Who knows what might have happened ? Another 90 minutes and are we anywhere nearer where we want to be.

Nope. Its saved his job for another week but thats it.

Sandro has done it a couple of times now, what a shot he has, makes you think we have a Bale long range shot replacement ... just a better overall approach and positive feel in this game.

Stay Calm, Push On and Support Spurs !!!

Only against weak opposition Cheatski and Manure though, he's a flat track bully :tumbleweed:

I wouldn't be surprised if Chadli being on was for some physical presence against Smalling. Lennon played well in the first half and I think we clearly targeted Evra as our avenue to break through, meaning the left side needed to be kept solid and locked down. So we keep Chadli on when Lennon comes on because we want Evra to be facing a constant stream of pace with fresh wingers who are able to go full pelt. It almost worked, Andros was a toe away from scoring and Defoe exploited space down their left side before getting pulled back by Vidic in a great position.

In terms of a plan for the match, ensuring Evra is up against 2 fresh wingers playing at full intensity is a sound proposition. And considering Lennon busted a gut for most of the first half and didn't do much at the start of the second, it again wasn't a terrible idea.

I think it was a good advert for exactly what we are going to see from AVB. Next team we face at the Lane who are lower down the table though, we will probably see more of a slower tempo again. That's the way it is going to be.

And to add to the above point, if Lamela isn't injured it's probably the reason why he wasn't in the squad at all. He isn't going to do Evra for pace and he isn't going to keep the left side solid, nor the centre of the pitch where Paulinho played well. This wasn't the game for him, and I'm sure if he was left out he understood why.
