Spurs team news: Sherwood hopes defensive trio will be fit to face Chelsea - Tottenham Hotspur - Tottenham Journal
Tim Sherwood hopes that three of his defenders will be available to face Chelsea tomorrow, with Kyle Walker, Younes Kaboul and Zeki Fryers all battling to shake off injuries.

Walker and Kaboul have both missed the last four games, and Zeki Fryers – who has been filling in for Danny Rose at left-back – had to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad this week due to an ankle problem.

But Sherwood said: “Walker is close, Younes Kaboul is close – we’re just waiting to see how they react after they train today.

“Zeki’s touch and go, he’s still got an ankle problem but we’re assessing him tomorrow and hopefully he should be ok.”

Gylfi Sigurdsson is also hoping to make his first Tottenham appearance since January 29, having played for Iceland against Wales in midweek.

The midfielder has scored in his last two games against Chelsea and he told the club’s website: “Of course I want to score again tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, Spurs still have a lengthy injury list to contend with, and they will be missing a number of players for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“It might come a bit soon for Christian Eriksen,” said Sherwood. “Erik Lamela? No. We’re hoping he’ll be back before the end of the season, but I don’t think he is anywhere near resuming training or being up for selection.

“Capoue? No. Vlad Chiriches is out too. It’s too soon for Danny Rose, but he’s making good progress.”

Given that Eriksen looks set to lose his race for fitness due to a back injury, Sherwood was pleased that the 22-year-old did not appear for Denmark against England in midweek.

“Christian knows himself – he’s only a young boy but he’s very mature,” said Sherwood. “He knew he wasn’t right to play so he made that decision for them, but it’s good of the Danish federation to consider Tottenham.

“It was a friendly, after all. They know everything they need to know about Christian Eriksen, he’s their star player. But he made the decision for them because he wasn’t right to play.”

So wait....Lamela is fine to play a part in the midweek international but we're hoping he's back before the end of the season? and people still think this whole injury story is legit?

His injury story is about as legit as Defoe's one the last month of his stay here.

I agree - that doesn't seem to make any sense at all.

Pretty sure he wasn't in the Argentinian squad.

I think you have him confused with Sigurdsson.

Sergio Romero
Pablo Zabaleta
Federico Fernandez
Lionel Messi
Javier Mascherano
José María Basanta
Gonzalo Higuain 77' Ezequiel Lavezzi
Marcos Rojo
Angel Di Maria 90' Maxi Rodriguez

That's a hell of a team.

Thankful that Lamela wasn't involved. Would've been a complete farce of a situation with us.

26 players in the Argentine squad. Don't think Lamela stands a chance to get picked for the World cup.

Twitter / sportingintel: How Tottenham's awful record at Chelsea in the Prem is uniquely bad: http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2014/03/07/tottenhams-last-league-win-at-chelsea-so-long-ago-it-involved-gary-lineker-070301/ … #thfc #cfc
There have been seven ‘ever-present’ clubs in the Premier League, none of them relegated from the top flight since England’s top division was revamped in 1992-93: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham. That means each of those seven have now faced each of the others 21 or 22 times at home in the Premier League, and 21 or 22 times away.

And all the ever-present seven have won at least one Premier League away match against each of the others. Except in one case. Tottenham, in the 21 completed years of the PL, have never won at Chelsea. Not once.

Our first graphic today illustrates quite how remarkable that is; and also highlights why Manchester United have been the outstanding club of the PL era, how their realistic challengers among the ever-present seven have only been Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, and how Villa, Everton and Spurs have struggled in that company.

Note United have won 61 of 131 away PL games against the others in this group (46.6 per cent), with Everton in contrast winning just 12 of 132 (or 9.1 per cent). Unlike Tottenham, though, Everton have won at least once at each of the other ever-present clubs’ grounds.

Tottenham themselves have managed seven wins at Goodison, five at Villa Park and two each at the homes of Arsenal, Liverpool and United. But they still await their first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge. True they have sometimes come close; close enough to claim 8 draws but that means 13 defeats as well in their 21 visits.

Tottenham fans with good memories will recall the last Spurs league win at Stamford Bridge, so long ago it involved a winner from Gary Lineker:
10 February 1990 Chelsea 1 (Bumstead) Tottenham 2 (Howells, Lineker)

Surprised by Villa's stats, just goes to show that our poor record is probably more of a mental thing than an a matter of skill.
