Yes, been saying for ages but we really miss wanyama and or dier.
Or/and a formation that mitigates them not being in the team.
40% of the figure for the entire 2016-17 is mental

Good summary. Second image illustrates the problems with the diamond when not pressing. Front the easily bypassed, midfield three left covering the width of the pitch, so many gaps.https://twitter.com/coachesvoice/status/1179434617201287168?s=21

Tottenham started with a four-diamond-two formation that featured Dele Alli at the peak of midfield, Harry Winks at the base, and Frenchmen Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko between them. The hosts also initially used an aggressive press with that same shape, in which Son Heung-min joined Harry Kane on the top line, and full-backs Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were encouraged to advance.

German champions Bayern Munich were set up into a 4-2-3-1 formation by manager Niko Kovac. Against Tottenham’s diamond midfield, they recognised both the potential for spaces in wide areas and that they could be exploited by switches of play.

Pochettino’s team attempted to negate their visitors by switching to a 4-4-2 when they were defending

but Bayern simply adjusted again; Coutinho drifted inside towards Tolisso and substitute Thiago Alcântara to create three-on-two overloads against Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele or Moussa Sissoko. Those overloads forced Spurs to become even more compact, and therefore concede further space out wide.
A picture paints a thousand words. Even on paper our fullbacks are exposed.
There is actually no reason to be if the system is working properly....

Just read an interesting point in the guardian website previewing saturdays game with Brighton with regard shots on our goal
‘ they have let their opponents have 112 this season (24 more than Brighton), and the 44 shots on target they have conceded is the most in the league, and already 40% of their figure for the entire 2016-17 season, when they finished second to Chelsea. Lloris was unlucky to be beaten so often on Tuesday, but he is being tested much too frequently’
I finally bought myself to watch the goals and eff me the goals scored were top notch Loris had no chance but was poor defending with nary a timely tackle or block put in. Does the above point back up the call for a dier-esque shield in front of our CBs?
There is actually no reason to be if the system is working properly....
The two centre halves take care of Bayern's number 9, Winks the number 10, our full backs their 29 and 22, Sissoko and N'Dombele their 32 and 24.
If Bayern's full backs push up (as they did) then our three deeper midfielders should then shift across to that side with Sissoko or N'Dombele covering the opposition's fullback on/near the ball with Dele filling in to pick up the full back on the other side - i.e. becoming more of a standard 4-4-2 in defence.

If it's that simple why aren't there more teams and managers playing this formation? There is actually no reason to be if the system is working properly....

This is where, for me, our FBs were shown up. Aurier's positional sense and decision making were appalling. Rose was also getting caught out positionally. With a diamond it is imperative that the FBs are both fast and play with discipline; neither was in evidence for me , though Rose gets a pass simply because he tried. But he was constantly wandering out of his areas. Winks was overloaded, and with the coverage scrambling to get there, it became easy for Bayern to switch back inside. I love Winks, but right now, whether he persists with the diamond or goes 4-2-3-1, Dier needs to be in. He would've made a difference on Tuesday. What would've made the biggest difference is if Aurier hadn't gone rogue; I still shudder every time I think of his stupid challenge on Gnabry on the half-way line for the third...
Every system will look good if you can just go on a godlike xG run.Looks like the last EPL team to enjoy any success playing a midfield diamond was ManU during Solskjaer’s honeymoon but Klopp and Sarri quickly sussed out how to exploit it...
Could not agree more!
My gripe was, why was nothing was done (unless I missed something) to shore it up ie doubling up on Gnabry?
Didn’t need to double up on him
Just do the basics well
Aurier didn’t do that
Two full backs we reportedly wanted to sell this summer. Both lacking form at the very best. Set up to give them little protection. This can't be a surprise to anyone. But there's the rub, Aurier could not do the basics and Poch did nothing to stop Gnabry.
Surely, you don't sit there and watch your team fail because a player couldn't cope.
