*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Saudi Sportswashing Machine FC ***

A classic for sure.

It was for sure being a old timer like me you would remember why Dave was so wound up with Bremner. For those who do not know the story it was because Dave had only just returned from a broken leg [against Utd] and this was his first game back and Bremner [ part of the dirty Leeds team at the time] kicked him on the same leg on purpose.

Please never lose your true understanding of the spirit of the game. When football people do that, we have lost the sport forever.

We are very close to RIP football as we stand. The game is in a mess.

Interesting discussion on today’s View From the Lane podcast as to why, following the advent of VAR, the entire football rule book needs to be re-written, with Saturday’s game giving a couple of particularly clear illustrations of why that is the case.

The obvious one is offside. Level is offside in the laws of the game, and the technology could be implemented in a way that builds an Xcm tolerance between the 2 lines drawn. However, the humans are too dumb to use the technology that way so we will have to eliminate the fantastic law that says level is onside.

I'll have to try and take a listen. I've spent my entire career implementing tech solutions and rarely seen one as bad as in football. It's always people - process - technology in that order, except for when football people do it.

Football is a simple game. 22 players, a ball, 2 goal posts and all that. It should be so easy to build complimentary technologies to support the officials. Just like the video ref advising the on-pitch ref in a couple of seconds whether it was a goal kick or corner after every player's arms goes up and all the screaming starts. This stuff is just table stakes.

Here's the problem. The rule book has already been re-written constantly by IFAB for years and years. Not for the betterment of football, but for the increase of revenues and salaries. How do we change that?

I think Dave had just returned from the second breaking of that leg, Noel Cantwell broke it in the United game in '63 and it took some time to heal, he broke the same bone in a resevere game in '64 in come back game, I remember it well as I heard news on portable radio while watching us lose 2-3 at West Ham. Dave was supposed to have told the medical team not to let Bill Nicholson know till after the game at Upton Park. The Bremner incident was in '66.

I saw Bremner a few times, sadly only say Dave with Derby. Bremner was bad but as I remember, Giles was worse.

Indeed, and as he was carried off at Utd he sat up on the strecher and clapped us Spurs fans.

They were bad for sure, but i think the Bassett team who i saw at the Lane [ Fash broke Mabbets cheek bone with a elbow and Jones finished Stevens when he knocked him into the stands in the same game]
Yes, they were fudging terrible too. I remember the Fash/Mabbs thing. John was a dirty, dirty player, one of the very worst. In fact perhaps only Ben Thatcher rivaled him for filthy intent?

I know this may seem daft but after that game i actually wrote a letter to Bassett saying how football should be disgusted with his pack of animals and should be ashamed. Give him his due he did reply to it saying despite what some were saying he did not keep his players in cages and feed them raw meat. Still got the letter somewhere among my collection of programes. :)

No they were just a bunch of lovable boys showing the fancy Dan's how to play. The media loved 'em and couldn't give Fashanu a job quick enough.

Was it in green ink?

You need your eyes checked. Brighton player headed the ball, then Saliba headbutted him in the side of the head. Of course it's a penalty. Absolutely clear cut.
Saliba did head the ball. They slowed it down on MotD.
Personally I believe it was a penalty because Saliba was reckless.
But perhaps it is YOU who needs his eyes checked, ref.

Saliba touched the ball after he headbutted the Brighton player. Means absolutely fudge all, as he was about a second late to the challenge.

Julian dingdongs was also a wrong ‘un - saw him sent off for elbowing Franz Carr, up in Saudi Sportswashing Machine back in 1992, brutal.
