OMT ** Tottenham Hotspur v Rangers ** Thursday 12 December 2024.

I don't think its anything too deep. Werner lost the ball 16 times in the first half!! Ange subbed him, Got asked about it afterwards and explained why, He's a senior player not some kid and should've done much better.

I'm sure if Ange was asked about each players 1st half performance he'd slag off almost all of them, but he just happened to be asked about the one that he has decided to take off
He said in his press conference the day before that he would never call a player out in public, while advising his vice-captain to keep his thoughts on the club to the dressing room.

It’s about how that looks to the players and what it says about where the manager’s head is at.

Well yeah, Ange knows this as he literally protects the players every week. Why Werner? Because he's the one on loan, and quite clearly doesn't have long to make an impact or he will be sent home early.

Calling out Son would have a bigger impact because he's the captain and a very popular guy of the squad. It's very easy for us armchair fans to be saying he should be calling out player x,y and z - funnily enough the thing most on here were crying about when Conte did it...
It's the opposite, he shouldn't be calling out any player in public, do it behind closed doors. He could have easily just said it was an off night for Werner and a few others and left it at that. Instead one player got singled out in what was a brick show from almost every player on the pitch.

I don't mind Ange calling players out.
He has done it with others already, and we know they need to step up.

What I would like to see if them just getting dropped. If he can keep Spence away from the team, he can do the same with others (once we get players fit...)

Maybe it’s a calculated attempt to try and turn his form around - trying a harder line when an arm around the shoulder for months hasn’t done anything.
It probably is but you've got to weigh the risks against the potential benefit. Best case scenario, Werner pulls his finger out and starts playing. And maybe he will because he's a pro and that'll hurt his pride.

Worst case scenario, Ange has lost Werner and other players are thinking "fudge me, will I be thrown under the bus next?" He may also have destroyed any sense of a siege mentality, "us against the world" dynamic in the squad.

Proof of the pudding will be in the eating. There isn't a "one size fits all" approach that works in management, otherwise we'd all just get an instruction book and be Premier League managers. And, to be fair, Ange has never done this before. Interested to see how it plays out.

Wow, is that true?? Do you have a link with those words/quotes??

Truly shocking if true (and shows a level of hypocrisy that loses loyalty and shows when under pressure he's as weak as some of our defensive tactics...)

On a positive note...

Thought both full backs put in massive efforts and really tried to make things happen despite rather obviously being tired. Forster was really good. Solanke did well when he came on, Kulusevski too. Bergvall looking good again. Dragusin very good defensively. Thought Maddison was alright too, not great, but not the problem.
Agree with most of that but not Porro. I honestly thought he looked Sunday League level when he was defending. He's gotten better on that front under Ange but last night he was back to his bad ways. And not just the goal.

He's a lovely footballer but a bad defender. Almost like a poorer man's Trent.

I dunno if Ange really has grounds to complain about Werner, he brought him back in even after his loan spell last season. What exactly did he expect? What did he think he saw that suggested we would get a response any different to the one we are recieving?

Werner is what he is, it's nothing new or unexpected. More fool Ange if thought that he would get more from him after actually coaching him for half a season already.

One of our problems last night stemmed back to one year ago. As we're seeing this season, when we're winning Ange will use his 5 subs. However, when we're not he will use 3 or 4. The pattern has been there since Ange joined.

So back to last year. We had a similar run of injuries and Ange had Dorrington on the bench for multiple games but never once put him for that cameo appearance late in a game. He never shifted Davies to LB and brought Alfie into the team for the closing exchanges. One year later and we have a very talented 19 year old that obviously couldn't start the game, but once again didn't get a cameo either. And so the pattern continues.

From what I saw in the U21's last season, I would absolutely trust Alfie to play centre half in the EL. It is where he belongs in his progression after what he's achieved in the U21's. He needed to come off the bench last night and break his first team duck, as we might need him in the coming weeks.

This is the quote - pretty unambiguous:

"We deal with these things in our own four walls. There's always issues we need to deal with. The same way I wouldn't criticise a player or anyone else, we shouldn't be doing that in a public sense."

Pretty damning on Ange to be fair. Wonder will he get quizzed on it today.

That's hilarious - he's clearly feeling the pressure

You mean the same thing Ange has done a million times before? Werner had an absolute shocker and that's why he was hauled off at half time and Werner will know it. Ange confirming that in an interview is going to have naff all additional effect on a player who we've needed more end product from for quite some time and it hasn't happened....

He hasn't done it a million times before and he's contradicted himself in the space of 24 hours when he said he wouldn't criticise a player in public.
Werner knows he was poor but still didn't deserve singling out more than any other player on the pitch last night.

He has protected the players a million times before and always said it's on him so he obviously has his reasons. He wasn't singled goes out, he replied to a question about Werner....

Werner was the player subbed off at half time, the media will focus in on him.

But after Ange said he wasn't performing to the level needed, he called out the senior players who need to step up as the youngsters are coming in and performing (at least to the same standard)

Should he have ignored the question, or said he played well?

Yup, but he went in hard, uncalled for. You're happy with him going in like that, that's fine, I don't think it's the best path.
Don't think he went in that hard considering the performance he had put in. Did you actually see the whole interview or just the bit that is highlighted on teletext? He went on to mention the rest of the team after he was directly asked about Werner. The guy is a professional footballer, put in a terrible performance and Ange said as such. Really don't see the big deal, managers do this all the time and many players step up and show the manager what they're made of....

No its because he has the ability. He is also not overused and a bit fresher, in theory. We needed him to step up. But I think pressure destroys him. Whenever through on goal, he crumbles. Whenever the stakes are high he falls apart.

But Son wasn't as bad. Werner couldn't take a simple pass on the by line. Shot over with a free shot on goal on the edge of the box. And his closing down is painful to watch. There is no determination or drive. Its late, and he lacks awareness of other players around. The criticism of Werner was justified. A meritocracy.

If you are taking a player off at HT because they have been zhit, there is no point lying about why you took them off. Quite a few posters on here advocated for hauling him off too at HT. Now Werner knows it is do or die. He has to up his game. He has to respond now.
