Well if Gutterboy said it, it must be true....

I watched "A Real Pain" today, I went in fairly blind having barely watched the trailer and did not regret it. Humorous and touching, Culkin and Eisenburg had great chemistry as expected but were possibly just playing magnified versions of themselves.

I had no idea of the plot so I wasn't sure what to expect, but a look into what it potentially feels like for Jewish people to go on a historical tour about the holocaust / WW2 was eye opening whilst remaining witty, with a real look into human behaviour and differences in lifestyle/ approach.

I have seen Robert Eggars Nosferatu, and can safely say it was excellent. Entertaining, dramatic, brilliantly filmed, and the perfect blend of Nosferatu and Dracula stories. Very impressive. I like him a lot as a filmmaker, was afraid he might fudge this up, but not at all, he has produced a memorable gothic horror masterpiece.
The ultimate cuckold.

Just started watching Poor Things from 2023, and at the start of the movie there's a big warning screen, white on black:

CONTAINS TOBACCO DEPICTIONS

Hahaha, what?! Surely a joke?

Anyways, an excellent movie, as it turns out.

I watched Nosferatu last night and was really impressed. It wasn’t as scary as I was hoping, but there are few better than Eggers in creating a real sense of time and place as well as producing something dripping with atmosphere.

Very good.

Head estate agent stole the show for me.

I wonder if they'll do a 'vegan cut' of the Bob Dylan film? The cast chainsmoke their way through that one, there'd only be about 4 minutes of footage left in

I was a bit disappointed. I dont think Nepo Depp is up to it.

Shadow of the Vampire is much better, as are the two previous versions of Nosferatu

It was odd. I actually didn't notice anyone smoking while watching the movie - lots and lots of drinking though! I thought it might have been a joke, but after a few Google searches, it seems these warnings are on many films! fudging weird.

Companion.

Excellent!!

Having avoided the trailers I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3/4 of Companion but I found the finale was a bit too predictable a B-movie take on
Ex Machina and Westworld
when I was hoping there would be another twist, especially when the mid-credit scene began.

Sophie Thatcher once again excellent, as she was in Heretic, whilst Jack Quaid giving his dad’s performance in The Substance a run for its money.

I am a huge Mike Leigh fan, and you'll find (IMO) Hard Truths to be very similar to his earlier work. It is somewhat of a palatte cleanser to see a production so spartan. Baptiste is outstanding, the story incredibly important. Along with Loach, he tells the stories which for me become a publiv service. Really interested to hear what you think of both this and The Brutalist; that intermission (13 mins long BTW) is interesting. You need it but it take a few mins to click back in.

Top man. Those are great plans. I had one out here for Alamo Drafthouse (a really great string of cinemas). I might renew, as I let it go during covid.

Was refreshing watching 2 movies which came in at under 100 minutes up Odeon this week, in Companion plus Hard Truths, when so many blockbusters are such bloated messes nowadays. Can see why Marianne Jean-Baptiste is being nominated for lots of awards for her performance, as she went from making the audience laugh and squirm with her rants during the first half to feeling pathos as we learnt more about the family.

Still waiting for The Brutalist to get shown in my local Luxe which has recliner seating, so i can put my feet up to avoid DVT 😆

I don't disagree re: finale but it didn't spoil the film for me at all. I did like the final few minutes a lot! Great shout re: Ex Machina, some deep similarities. I was impressed at how much humour there was amidst the ugliness...agreed re: Marianne Jean-Baptiste's performance in Hard Truths. Excellent. Mike Leigh is a national treasure...

It was an Infinity Pool / Blink Twice double bill for me this weekend, which made for an unintentionally complementary double bill.

I’d highly recommend both, although they were hard to watch at some points.
