Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe

Is it just my imagination, or has Defoe improved on his positioning this season.
He doesn't seem to be caught offside as many times now compared to previous seasons.

Re: Jermain Defoe

Those stats are a bit naive (no offence to the OP)

Szalai has 20 goals in about 70 games for the mighty Mainz 05 (Pav had similar if not superior record btw) and if you looked at the above graph you'd imagine he's some kind of boss

Cavani on the other hand has 17 goals in 17 games this season and appears to be on the same levels as Michu

It's not goals per game, it's goals per chance.

Though then you get onto the age old question 'what counts as a chance'...

If I am not mistaken, goal/attempts, ie. shots or in other words, measuring the wastefulness of the striker. Suarez needs about 10 attempts on average to score a goal, and Defoe about 7 attempts to score a goal. Based on the chart, Ronaldo used 100 attempts to score 13 goals (13%), and Messi only used 75 attempts to score 21 goals (28%).

If you read the fine prints, they are only taking stats from this season's league games, and only those who had scored 8 or more times in the so called Big-5 leagues.

Re: Jermain Defoe

I see Defoe has picked up 4 yellow cards. Now if he picks up a fifth and Adebayor is out injured....................

Probably more to do with previous seasons we have been a good at attacking with pace and tried to get him in quickly. This season he is up front on his own so has to come and pick up the ball a bit more and our build up is slower. But he is older and probably does time it a bit better - not that I go along with this theory he was bad at it, everyone that plays like him normally get caught offside a lot (plus I remember reading something a few years ago that he was top of the "wrongly caught offside" chart).

"...and playing as striker for Spurs...JAN VERTONGHEN!!!!!!!!:lol::p"

Joking. Yes, it would test our squad for sure.

Re: Jermain Defoe

defoe is just doing well because he is the ONLY striker and focal point up front.

he is still poor at finishing - though he does more than bang in the occasional beauty - given the number of chances and the possession that he fails to take advantage of.

unfortunately that's defoe and yes while his involvement with the team has improved -not difficult as the whole team player more shorter safer passes anyway - he is best only if we continue with the lone striker role.

Evidence from Keane to Berbs to Ade ... all excellent strikers ... none could really strike up a bond with defoe.

However given how our game is shaping up well from defence to midfield, our weak link is now our attack... we should be scoring more goals, if not putting the opponents on the back foot more of the time, counter attacking with greater success etc.

Until Ade steps up, Defoe is the best we have. if we are really intending to stay in the top 4 we need to do better in attack...

Spurs are creating more than enough goalscoring chances this season (182 - only Emirates Marketing Project have created more) and exactly half of them have been on target.

The problem is our goals to chances ratio, which at 16.5% is only around the Premier League average for the season....

Jermain Defoe: Lost possession due to a poor first touch 9 times vs Swansea yesterday - more than any other player in a PL game this season

hmm...but at least a couple of them would be because of he's fast and has the sense to get near to the ball first

anyway, not that many players could control the ball in the short space and time allowed (when your opponents defended with 10 behind the ball

Lennon would.

I get what you're saying, however 'more than any other player in a PL game this season ' is a whole lot of games.

Just over 130 games i believe.

That control yesterday was not good enough for a top half team, never mind a top four team. In fact it's worse than the relegation sides.

The lad can score goals that's sure, but he needs to control the ball to have a chance at doing that.
