defoe is just doing well because he is the ONLY striker and focal point up front.
he is still poor at finishing - though he does more than bang in the occasional beauty - given the number of chances and the possession that he fails to take advantage of.
unfortunately that's defoe and yes while his involvement with the team has improved -not difficult as the whole team player more shorter safer passes anyway - he is best only if we continue with the lone striker role.
Evidence from Keane to Berbs to Ade ... all excellent strikers ... none could really strike up a bond with defoe.
However given how our game is shaping up well from defence to midfield, our weak link is now our attack... we should be scoring more goals, if not putting the opponents on the back foot more of the time, counter attacking with greater success etc.
Until Ade steps up, Defoe is the best we have. if we are really intending to stay in the top 4 we need to do better in attack...
