And yet Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard just to name a few get caned by the English media and football fans because they couldn't get past a quarter final, and yet Beckham is a hero, doesn't make sense. Yes we all know he scored against Greece. What's he done since then? Win MVP in the all star game in the MLS?

People get so touchy when you slate Becks don't they! Calm down. I never said I hated him.

He's got the best PR team in the world. Bloke can have an affair and still be a hero!

Take away all his celebrity, his looks, his fame, what are you left with? A player who's biggest achievement for his country is reaching a quarter final, even the most diehard Becks fans can't argue with that! Never played well consistently in a tournament for England.

This jealousy arguement is a fallacy. He's made millions through his image, celebrity and football skills (even if they are limited), good luck to him! Don't begrudge him his fame as a CELEBRITY! Just don't understand why he's so famous as a FOOTBALLER. He's not close in terms of ability to the likes of Gerrard and Rooney. I honestly wouldn't put Beckham in the top 20 all time England players.

I won't argue that he is a fine ambassador for this country. I'm sure if I met him, I'd be impressed by him. Just think he's overrated, sorry!
 
None of the other recent England players have got further in a tournament than Beckham, so I can't see how that can be used for a stick to beat him down,

He was successful at his club, even if in a team that had other good players. But he was part of the most successful club in England for about a decade.

As to why he is more popular than other England and United players, perhaps its because people like him more. Remember he's up against Rooney, Rio, Neville, Cole, Terry and others.

And can you imagine any of them doing this ...

But he hasn't got any further than them!! That's my point.

Of course people like him more than the likes of Terry and Cole, Beckham isn't a prick. I don't begrudge him his popularity or fame at all. I don't dislike Cristiano Ronaldo because he's a great player and women love him, again good luck to him. The only reason I don't like him is that he's not really a team player compared to Messi.

Can't it be possible that some people like him but just don't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to his ability?
 
What I like about Beckham is that even though he managed to become a massive superstar off the pitch he seemed to always be honest and hard working on the pitch. Did his best and really tried. That's quite rare and I think that warrants some respect.

Would agree 100% with that. I've never questioned his work rate or desire for club and country.

If he can bring his international form to Spurs he could be a very useful player indeed. I don't think Harry ever rated him though so hopefully AVB can get something out of him.
