but hasnt LVG turned down Spurs no matter what??? Thats what ive been reading anyway, even if he doesnt get the Utd job he wont then be rolling up at WHL. Maybe he has had some discussions with Levy and feels that the Spurs job isnt right for him.

I think that is just paper talk. I am sure that he would rather go to United than us but if ManU appoint someone else and he does really want to manage in England we may be the best option open to him. In those circumstances, I think that he would take the job.

I think that's just Redknapp/Timmeh's pals in the red tops trying to embarrass us/Levy. Everything credible I've read suggests he and Levy made a gentleman's agreement in January, which they would finalise at the end of the season.

As he's seemingly not United's first choice, if they get any of the names higher up their list, there won't be another big EPL job coming up. If Ancelotti says yes, it's likely us or retirement for LVG.

I think that is rubbish. The press care about a story that sells papers not keep Tim Sherwood happy. LvG turns down Spurs for a bigger job is a good story that will sell papers and get clicks from the fans of two of the best supported clubs in the country and that is why they write it.

i get that, i understand, but wouldnt it be better to say to Levy "look, im still interested in the Spurs job but id also like to talk to Utd"?? This isnt what the dutch media are reporting, they are saying that he has said no to the Spurs job. Could be just paper talk, who knows. One other thing to consider is how Levy feels about all this, being ditched at the alter at the last minute. Would he really entertain LVGs renewed interest in the Spurs job if he doesnt get the Utd job??

I'm sure that Levy understands that there will be competition when you are trying to recruit big names and that big names are likely to want to see what options are available and take the one that is best for them. I cannot see Levy taking that personally and if LvG is his first choice (and we don't know for sure that he is) and he was available, I am sure that he wouldn't let pride get in the way of doing the deal.

Ryan Giggs has not put a foot wrong at ManUre so far...

About the most interesting analysis I saw of Moyes's failure at ManUre was the mismatch between his temperament (industrious, cautious, humble, risk averse) and the club's tradition (flair, arrogance, commitment to youth).

Is it important to appoint someone who believes "to dare is to do"? If so, who fits the bill?

Oddly enough, I think TS gets this aspect of Spurs, and may even take it too far. His philosophy seems to be to focus on posing problems to the opposition, not on negating threats they pose to us.

It's a sacrilegious thought but a certain Arsene Wenger seems a perfect match for Spurs.

Levy didnt seem happy when Redknapp was being flattered by Englands advances. He soon got rid at the first available opportunity. Levy is not a man to be fooled around

I think that was more Harry's behaviour than him being suitored by others. There had been an offer on the table for a while, Redknapp had refused to sign it and then when he didn't get the England job he mouthed off to the media about how the players needed stability and he needed a contract extension to provide that. I think that it was the duplicity of an employee that was the issue and why we got rid. The LvG situation is completely different.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footb...-united-manager-louis-3442177?.............he hasnt got the Utd job yet but has already rejected the Spurs one. Lets say he doesnt get the Utd gig, what then, he goes back to Levy and says he is interested again???

I think you're reading way too much into that article, and you're taking what a tabloid is reporting at face value, literally interpreting what they're saying in what isn't even a direct quote from some unnamed source, never mind a quote from the man himself.

That's a tabloid reporting from unknown sources, perhaps translated, almost certainly edited to fit the story they want to present.

Put in context with everything else that has been reported, actual quotes from LvG, named sources etc I don't think your conclusion is warranted.

Spot on.

The more I think about it the more I want Pochettino, as the realistic choice. I love the football Southampton play, they've got an organised defence and while I don't think the results have gone their way, they've given the top teams a real game both home and away.

I honestly don't think the talent there is that great, but he's moulded a team that MAKES individual players look outstanding. I think he's decent, don't get me wrong, but seriously, Jay Rodriguez looks absolutely outstanding in that system and I'm not really sure that he is that great. Lambert is 32, I mean he looks outstanding too, but where has he been hiding all this time? I think they have a very good player in Lallana and an outstanding prospect in Shaw.

I think our squad looks very suited to the way he's got Southampton set up.

The front 3 for me would be sorted straight away: Rodriguez = Lamela, Lambert = Ade, Lallana = Eriksen. Already you can see there would be a step up in quality quite significantly to our squad, as we're comparing our players to the best area of their squad and IMO all ours are superior. So all those that say "Tim beat him twice" are being pretty ridiculous. Tim only just beat him twice with a lot of fortune going our way in both games, in which I thought Southampton looked the better side for long periods of both matches, but in which both matches our individual quality won through to win us the game.

I like the way he presents and holds himself too. I just have a good feeling about him being a great fit for us and he's proven to be able to mould a squad of young, promising players into an effective unit. I just think he'd be able to work well with Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli, Townsend, Kane, Bentaleb and make an attractive, effective team.

a very good post. Its certainly convinced me anyway that Poch could be the man we need. I know you dont like Soldado but who knows maybe Poch get a lot more out of him as well.

the situations may be different, but all im saying is that Levy is not a man that likes to be messed around.

Who does like to be messed around with?

What has happened here that you think looks like LvG is messing around with Levy? It's all pretty standard, and somewhat predictable even. Plenty of people on here have been hoping that United and Moyes do well, fearing that they would come after LvG if Moyes got sacked and expecting LvG to pick United over us if given the option.

if Utd chose someone else, then LVG will probably hang around to see what happens with Wenger at Arsanal  oh, there might be a vacancy at Emirates Marketing Project if the sheikhs think Pellegrini has failed. Maybe LVG will want to see what develops there:) I can just see Levy waiting patiently all summer for LVG to finally get round to accepting the Spurs job after failing to get a bigger gig:) we shall see

Is there a realistic chance for Klinsmann??? probably not but I feel thats one man that could galvanise the club and the supporters.

Its clear that Man Utd are bigger fish than us and if they want LVG there wont be much we can do...Ancellotti will not be let go by Madrid yet. FDB and Allegri would pose the same amount of risk as Klinsmann but I feel the job would be easier for Jurgen with his history with the club.

Either way we need as soon as possible a structure/plan for next season... a blueprint where Levy/Franco and the new coach can work together and effectively for the betterment of our club. Squad wise I actually think the defence needs looking at first...Kaboul is to injury prone and doesnt look the player he was a few years ago, Dawson is just not up to it and Rose has massive ? marks over him. Verts seems disenterested.

Last season when they all met in Jamaica to talk strategy it all went Pete Tong...this year wherever they all meet we need to make better plans for the 2014/2015 season.

move heaven and earth for Jurgen the German.

If Pellegrini or Wenger are leaving their jobs this summer I think that the announcement will be made pretty soon after the last game and contact may already have been made with representatives of potential managers. I doubt that we would have to wait all summer.

What we can safely say is that whoever it might be, be they an experienced premiership campaigner, or one of Europe's elite, they will have been sacked by November 2016.

If that happens it will mean that a large portion of the fans will have turned on him long before. Besides, two full seasons is above the current average PL tenure.

On Pochettino, a lot of people seem to be saying "he got sacked at Espanyol with them being bottom" as a part of "what's he ever done?" Even as far as comparing his lack of experience to Sherwood's.

I'm no expert on Spanish football and would like to be corrected by anyone more knowledgeable, but I think this is a real misrepresentation. So a couple of articles, links and facts on Pochettino. This is stuff from before he was successful at Southampton. This view was presented to some extent by the English media at the time, but only in between all the "who is this guy that brought Espanyol to the bottom" and "what the ****, we liked Adkins, he was English" articles.

-First off: According to transfermarkt in total Espanyol made a £20m net transfer profit in total in Pochettino's last two seasons there. That's considerable, with their spending severely limited. More on that a bit later.

-One article with a couple of interesting points: http://talksport.com/magazine/features/130118/everything-you-need-know-about-new-southampton-manager-mauricio-pochetti-189605

Key points:
3) When he took charge of the Espanyol first team, the Catalans were third from bottom of La Liga. Pochettino turned their season around, however, with the side eventually finishing 10th.

6) Pochettino's good work at Espanyol led to strong links with the Real job as many in Spain considered him a natural Pep Guardiola-like figure who could lead the Spanish giants. In early 2012, TV show Punto Pelota even claimed Pochettino had been approached to take over from Jose Mourinho at the end of the season, should the Portuguese manager choose not to renew his contract at the Bernabeu. However, Mourinho ultimatley extended his deal by two years in May, making him coach until 2016.

7) The loss of key players like Osvaldo, Jose Callejon, Javi Marquez and keeper Carlos Kameni had a severe impact on Espanyol's fortunes, particularly after the side's hierarchy failed to grant sufficient funds to strengthen in the summer of 2012. As a result, the club's start to the 2012/13 season was poor and both Pochettino and Espanyol eventually agreeed to part company in November.

-Another worthwhile article: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/21084201

Again, some highlights if people don't feel like reading all of it:
Southampton fans may be shocked by the sudden appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, but in Spain few people are surprised to see the 40-year-old Argentine back in a high-profile job.

Pochettino is highly regarded for his work at previous club Espanyol - and that respect has largely remained intact despite his departure by mutual consent from the Barcelona-based club in November and their subsequent revival under new coach Javier Aguirre.

-----------

The consensus among supporters was that Pochettino had been placed in a no-win situation at a club saddled with enormous debts, where he was consistently forced to sell his best players and deal with seemingly endless boardroom strife.

For many fans, the final straw was the summer departure of homegrown Spain Under-21 striker Alvaro Vazquez to Getafe. When Espanyol then kicked off the new season with just one point from their opening six games, fans directed their anger firmly towards the board rather than Pochettino.

Fans preferred to respect Pochettino for the achievements earlier in his reign and during his time as a central defender for the club.

-----------

Pochettino's introduction to management was no easy task as he took over a team deep in relegation trouble, but he further strengthened his standing with supporters by inspiring his new team to a late-season turnaround that resulted in a 10th-placed finish.

Over the next couple of years, he developed a reputation as a forward-thinking and thoroughly modern coach. His teams played fast-paced football with an emphasis on pressing and ball retention, developing possession from defence, and Pochettino's methods soon attracted interest from a number of clubs around Europe.

Eventually the club's dire financial situation caught up with him. Debts forced them to sell star player after star player, including Jose Callejon to Real Madrid, Victor Ruiz to Napoli and Daniel Osvaldo to Roma, increasingly requiring Pochettino to make do with loan signings and veterans on short-term deals.

-----------

One notable aspect of Pochettino's time at Espanyol was his ability to work with young players and integrate them into the first team.

More than 20 academy graduates were introduced into senior football under him and, considering Southampton's strong track record in developing youth talent, that's surely one of the qualities that attracted them to Pochettino.

This isn't stuff written after he succeeded at Southampton by people trying to point out that they always knew, this is from when he first took over, by people that know a lot more about Spanish football than me. I would have no problems if anyone wants to correct or nuance my views on this as I freely admit my knowledge is limited. But I think this paints a picture of Pochettino's time at Espanyol that's drastically different, and more informative, than "he got sacked at Espanyol with them being bottom".
