New England manager = Roy Hodgson

Mick. Is Harry or Woy better qualified for the job?

England manager?

Hodgson, not because he's a better manager, just because I think he will handle the flak better, mediate with the media better, and play the party line with the FA better.

Harry will get more out of the squad and achieve better results in my view

But I'm happy as can be - he's still Spurs manager

and hopefully will be for next season.

Which should leave all of you irrational chumps looking like a bulldog sucking tinkle off a stinging nettle, as we end up 3rd or 4th, and hopefully win a cup or something.

But don't worry, you'll have plenty of off the cuff press conference faux pas' and radio phone ins to get apoplectic over.

Some of you really are ridiculously disrespectful towards a manager who has done what most Englishmen don't do, broaden their horizons by working abroad, and who boasts an impressive cv with multiple trophies won.

would he not have had CL experience when he was Inter Milan manager ? plus he has already got International experience, that said that is only really half of what you need to be England manager - it looks as though the knives will be out for him in the media, ready to pounce at the first sign of trouble and i have my doubts the big ego's in the squad will give him the respect he deserves.

on paper Hodgson is massively the better candidate, but i think Redknapp would have worked out the best option for England

Really couldn't give a brick about that to be honest. It's the multiple trophies that's the important part.

My only disappointment with Hodgson is that we have another Manager who will fall into the international style of game trap. I really want to see an England manager play to the strengths of the players and basically play Premiership style football at international level. We keep trying to play technical tactical football at international level and all we do is play into their hands. Really want an England team that just goes at the opposition with confidence and 100 miles per hour.

Spurs fan not a Harry fan remember? He'll be gone in the summer IMO. If not and we stays, for the sale of the club I live I want him to succeed. I suspect well lose our heat players. Well start the season poorly and he'll get fudged off before Christmas with us sitting around 12th. I hope I'm wrong.

And gets royally arse raped.

There's a reason no-one plays like that at International level and indeed a reason why even the English clubs have stopped playing like that in Europe. It will get you absolutely nowhere. Playing Spain's possession game against Spain is obviously suicide but the alternative is not to go flying at them at 100mph. Parker, Barry, Gerrard,, Terry, Ferdinand and all the other OAPs will be tired by the 60 minute mark and a good team would pick us off. An above average team would do likewise.

Hodgson's England will likely play how his teams generally play. I feel sorry for him tbh because it seems like the media is already getting on his back because he's not Redknapp and any sign of weakness will be pounced on. I'm not going to get into the vitriol some of the other fans on here have been doing, though I'm also no longer a 'Redknapp defender' (I hate labals) but you'd think the FA had just hired Glenn Roeder instead of Ferguson or Lippi by the way they're carrying on.

Yep, and in my opinion it's a case of the blind leading the blind. England have never played like that at international level, and that's one reason we'll never win anything. You can expect players to play one style their entire lives and then change it for a few games a season.

As for Europe, Barca have proven to the world that a well co-ordinated high pressing game DOES work. But do England have the balls to do it or will they slow their pace right down like usual?

Didn't you say in the past that "possession is king" and England should be retaining the ball?

Barcelona can afford a well co-ordinated high pressing game because they spend 70% of the game in possession of the ball and when they lose it, the player in possession is already surrounded by 3 of them.

Can you imagine England doing the same? Press hard, mess up 5 yard ball. Press hard, string together 5 passes, lose the ball. Press hard, string together a couple of passes, hoof it, lose the ball. Again, tire out after 60 minutes. Get picked off by good team. Or by average team like Slovenia or Algeria.

Actually, this is true, has this not been used as a way by you to justify our recent 'lots of possession, little chances created' run of matches?

I think it's a collective effort. I agree that the truly great managers have more influence in the team's fortunes i.e. Fergie, but look at England for example. Same group of players haven't performed for over 10 years. Capello widely regarded as a great manager couldn't get the best out of them supposedly. Is it all Capello's fault?

I think Capello did ok with that squad. Under the pressure from the press and considering the (lack of) talent at his disposal I think he added value to England. Stupid decision over Terry though.

I actually agree with MK, I would really like to see an England manager at least attempt to play a physical/pacy team (PL style).

And to the comments re Spain/Barca, you don't try a tactic against those types/levels of teams. Teams/players in Europe have struggled with things that are routine in the PL (Crouch anyone?), you are not going to get most of the current English team to outpass/outretain/be tacticaly superior, so why not play to what they are good at?

Hodgson is a brick appointment in my book, all that will happen is terribly unimaginative, boring but well organized English teams will lose 1-0 against any decent side ... horay!

I retain that if England wanted to go for it during the Euros and do something a bit brave they should go for getting as many Manchester United players on the pitch as possible and then try to have them play like United do.

As far as pressing goes into that United are easily one of the best teams in the league (if not the world) at varying where the put pressure on teams and doing so at the right time. They can press very high up the pitch and deny teams the possibility of building from the back at one point, 5 minutes later they defend in their own half, but always as a unit, always with everyone doing their job and doing it well. Unless you have the freakish stamina and ball skills of Barcelona or Spain or no interest in pressing at all that's the way to go about it. Varying pressure, but always as a unit.

Barca have this too - the 5 second rule thing - where if they don't win it back in the first 5 seconds they fall back into shape.

McClaren has the opportunity to pick a fairly young squad without some of the old guard and potentially survive it if fails. He's been brought in because he'll go to Burton every day.

However, basing the team on the Man U model isn't a bad shout.
