Modric - No Longer A Spurs Player

On what basis are you saying that none of our players take a better corner than Modric? What sample are you basing this on because it seems to be VDV and Modric that almost exclusively take our corners?

No goal poachers shouldn't be taking corners, they should be in the box getting on the end of corners/crosses I would have thought that was simple common sense. It's a bit disingenuous to describe Modric simply as a central midfielder, he is the attacking fulcrum of our team, our chief playmaker, therefore I do feel that it is reasonable to expect him to be able to deliver a good corner.

Well that's lovely, but they should for example look at last match where we had about 20 fudging corners amounting to fudge all and think hmmm perhaps we shouldn't just rely on those two to take our corners.

On the basis that the people that are choosing our corner kick takers watch our players week in and week out in training and the assumption that these people are capable of making an informed decision. Is that too big of a leap?

What is so special about goal poachers? What about strikers that score a lot of goals, but are good all-round? What's different? Arsenal use van Persie, Chelsea have often used Drogba, I've seen United use Rooney, list goes on. For me simple common sense would be that the best corner takers should take the corners, regardless of position. With one exception being if that player is strong in the air, then it would depend on a couple of other factors. Any rule of what different players should do on set pieces that doesn't take into account what abilities the player has seems more nonsensical than common sense to me.

So if you're an attacking fulcrum player then a rather big part of that job is to take a good corner? Like I say, you should have a look at Stoke, they seem to buy and choose players based on their set piece abilities. For me it's up to management to make sure that we have set piece experts available in the squad and on the pitch, preferably one right footed and one left footed. Where they play on the pitch I don't care about at all and I don't see why you do either.

How many corners did Modric take out of those corners? I don't think he took a single one until VdV went off. I'm not really in the mood to turn this into a "Spurs corners thread".

i just had a wild thought

how about, we keep our best players and then just buy the good players out there that we need?

how about that? not bad eh? yeah...i'm proud of myself for that one too. It just came to me, the complexity filtered away like it wasnt there and then i just hit me

i should patent that tbh. such a crazy idea but i think it'll catch on one day

"Keep your best players, and when you want to improve your team......just ADD to them!!!!"

Luckily Levy agrees with you :)

Like who? That seems to me to be the flaw with your plan, we dont ever seem to be that organised with what players we NEED

well lets tackle that then.

what positions do we need. need being the key point....IMO

first we need someone that can consistently put the ball in the back of the net.
We need someone that can hold up the ball well and bring others into the game well
we need competition for bale / lennon. someone that can play out wide and also tuck infield
we need a number 10 that stays forward when they can and act like a real creative fulcrum in the final third...OR we could just get a striker that likes to get beyond the last line
We need a consistent and reliable CB pairing, outside of king (who should start whenever fit).

Al in all, i would say we need

2 forwards
1 winger or wide playmaker
1 CB (as i feel gallas has one more year, king will be available on and off , Dawson is still VERY good, and kaboul makes a good squad player. But we should buy one CB that is significantly better than all bar King ...cause you just cant get better than a demi GHod)

....so far what do you think? after we hash out what we need, come to a compromise if need be,.....we can start throwing names at the problem

more talented..., but as far as application goes and running that team? is touch and go for me. not easy to call. i'd actually vote modders

He's also a motivator, he shines in the big games, he scores more goals, takes better free kicks, takes better corners, takes better penalties, runs further

But more importantly, he is much better looking

Gollum can fudge off if he doesn't want to play here

VDV on other hand has his child wearing Spurs colours

VDV>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Modric

i love the way VdV has thrown himself in to everything Spurs since he has joined - say what you want but having players like that at the club (any club) is important and something the fans will always appreciate

The thing about Modric and reason why I think it's not so harmful to keep him if he doesn't want to be here is because he's a quiet, honest, down to earth and hard working player. When we've had big personalities in the dressing room like Berbatov, Sheringham or Keane that were unhappy, that spreads to the rest of the team as they were vocal and well respected amongst the squad. Modric seems quite shy to me and whilst some of the other players would be aware of him being unhappy, I don't think he's the type to start expressing his discontent and have a major effect on team morale. Even if he has bigger dreams than playing for us on lower wages than he could get elsewhere, I get the feeling from him that he knows how lucky he is to be playing football and will continue to work hard at what he does.

If the likes of Adebayor, Van Der Vaart, Parker or Gallas were visibly unhappy about being here then that would be a different story, I'd be far more inclined to get rid of them.

Say names AS..throw suggestions in.

i'd rather first of all establish what we need, when people can come to some sort of understanding as to what's lacking in what is a potentially devastating team..we can move on to those pesky names

llorente is top of my list for HOLD UP guy, problem though is that he is a player to play beyond the last line in transition. but i very much like his old up play...and for a guy that plays in spain he is one mother fudger of a bully

VDV is my favourite player right now. I'd let him bum me and I'd push back. His missus would be sucking me off of course

On the basis that the people that are choosing our corner kick takers watch our players week in and week out in training and the assumption that these people are capable of making an informed decision. Is that too big of a leap? That would be entirely possible were it not for the fact that our corners are so pathetic. What seems equally likely to me is that Harry et al are too happy to pander to our big name players and do not always follow the mantra that no player is bigger than the club. One obvious example of this is Harry's handling of the Modric transfer situation last summer. Another would be the fact that he continues to pick certain players regardless of form eg reluctance to drop VDV when he was under performing earlier in the season and Defoe was looking sharp.

What is so special about goal poachers? What about strikers that score a lot of goals, but are good all-round? What's different? Arsenal use van Persie, Chelsea have often used Drogba, I've seen United use Rooney, list goes on. With one exception being if that player is strong in the air, then it would depend on a couple of other factors. Any rule of what different players should do on set pieces that doesn't take into account what abilities the player has seems more nonsensical than common sense to me. firstly none of those strikers that you have mentioned are simply pure goal poachers like defoe. When I talk about a goalpoacher i mean an old fashioned type of player whose main purpose in the team is to score goals and who offers little else beside that. If tat kind of player is not waiting in the box for corners and crosses to come in then they are not doing their job properly. It's a bit like saying why don't we play bale as a right winger ecause he/we can rather than the area of the pitch in which he will be more effective and therefore of most benefit to the team.

No it's a simple skill that a "world class player who could play in any top cl team" should possess. I do think that a creative attacking midfield player should be able to create goalscoring chances do you not? You refer to van Perse, Rooney, and drogba well maybe Rather than making snide remarks about supporting stoke perhaps you should have a look at them to see the quality of delivery a technically excellent player should be capable of delivering on a consistent basis, or maybe they are just set piece specialists about to be snapped up by stoke

How many corners did Modric take out of those corners? I don't think he took a single one until VdV went off. I'm not really in the mood to turn this into a "Spurs corners thread".
well he definitely took some of them because I remember groaning to myself every time he trotted up to take a corner and this was before VDV came off.
Anyway this debate is going nowhere so let's agree to disagree.

Llorente is a great name thats thrown around a lot on here. People say that if we dont make the CL then Luka will want to leave and we should then blow the money on Llorente. Couple small questions:
- if we dont make the CL, do you really think that we'd be that attractive to Llorente?!?!?
- what about the other numerous clubs that would come in for him and could pay the same if not more: ManC, Man U, Cheatski, Real, barca, Malaga, Roma, Inter, Milan, PSG etc etc and thats even before you consider teams like Liverpoo, Arse, Bayern who would match us financially. Granted Barca might not be interested but the others would blow us out of the water with wages and fee

People seem to think that if we had ?ú40m from selling Modric or Bale we would be able to attract other top players. I think they need to take off the rose-tinted spectacles and realise that we need to hold on to the top players which we have as we really arent as attractive a proposition as some people think and we would struggle to bring in other top players

He already trains with one of the spurs underage teams.
Rafa posted posted this of him at spurs a few months ago

Cue Spurs fans saying he's never going to make it, etc etc. looks brick. Championship at best. Dean Marney etc.

Honestly, Luka Modric cant be considered world class because his shooting is so poor.

Most people on this board agree with me. His shooting has been terrible this season, it is very bad. He needs to learn to score from outside the box like true midfielders.
