Mighty Spurs vs SCBC

Agree we were beaten by the better team. Completely disagree that it had anything to do with our centre forward.

I thought we lost the game as Hassenhuttel won the tactical battle. Looked to me as though Southampton played an aggressive 442, playing high up. The midfield played reasonably narrow giving them a numerical advantage and their two full backs got high up, turning our 3 at the back into 5 at the back. Southampton’s two up front meant that our 3 CBs couldn’t dictate play like Conte’s tactics rely on.

When you have 3 players in the team who are appalling when pressed (Hojbjerg, Winks and Sanchez) it is always going to be difficult against a team that has a well orchestrated press as Southampton do. There was lots of space between Southampton’s midfield and defence. But because Winks and Hojbjerg are so weak on the ball we very rarely got a ball into that danger area from where we could build good attacks.l (and several times Moura and Kane had got into that position in space only to not get the ball)

I fear any team who plays a well orchestrated press against us if we are playing any two of the three of Winks, Hojbjerg and Sanchez.

If we had a big hold up centre forward then our lack of ability to beat the press is minimised. Players can punt the ball up to him to hold up and our attacking players and midfielders can then get into the game. Without this weapon our limitations are severely exposed. This same weakness was shown up in every game against Chelsea.

Hopefully the director of football understands this also. Though you would have researched Royal more before signing him.

The Royal signing really bothers me.

Add Kulu to that. He appears to have no pace or trickery and is so one footed that he is easy to read. Certainly not what was needed.

Got back home from WHL about 90 minutes ago and after enjoying the performance on Saturday it was very disappointing to see us so utterly outplayed by a (admittedly well drilled) mid-table team.

Seems that year we went without any new furniture is still haunting us and have my fingers crossed that Paratici can muster up a few more recruits who instantly elevate Conte’s team, like Bentancur has done in the 2 cameos I’ve witnessed.
The same furniture was fine on Saturday against a better side
The key of course on Saturday was they had easier attackers to deal with who didn’t move

They will be a success if they are better then what we have. It is clear we need to build a team rather then going for big name star signings. Happened at Man U as well just signing players because of the reputation. We need to build a team.
100% this.
And an identity.
It's been a while since anyone knew what kind of team we are. (Rag tag doesn't count!)

Your literally slagging off a player who didn’t even play
Tahst kinda acting like a sadist… I mean that actually makes you a true spurs fan TBF
And the Chelsea thing you bring up again… conte was at fault in the Chelsea games as much as his team, as he was too tonight
If he couldn’t work out the players he had couldn’t play how he wanted he should change things.
Southampton tonight moved our cbs by having two strikers. It was that easy and another game where Ralf has done a number on conte

As bad as some them were last night, a lot of this is on conte.
It was obvious we needed not just a personel change but a formation change at half time.
Why he persisted with winks and peh is totally beyond me.
The back line was out numbered and swamped by Southampton, there was no ball retention so it was constantly coming back onto the back line before they had a chance to reset.
When we did bring bentancur on he had a good 10 mins then disappeared because Southampton seen his menace and snuffed him out. Yet we couldn't do that with ward prowse who at times had the freedom of WHL.

It’s a combination of both of the things imo
They pressed us (as is their standard) and we we receded into a low block
When the ball went forward we didn’t hold it up well enough
When they attacked us we had the right hand side (their left) that was allergic to doing the basics. All their attacks first half came down that side
Second half we were better (couldn’t be worse) but still got done with two basic headers (great crosses) because some players just can’t seem to play well for two games straight

He only had one CM on the bench
And he wasn’t gonna change the CBS when he doesn’t rate the options there

I would have liked your post because I agreed with everything you said except for the last sentence which I disagreed with quite strongly.
He's hopeless at everything. Only 23?
If he was going to make it , I would expect better performances from a teenager.
I stand by that 1 vs 1 he's solid, but as soon as there is movement around him from more than 1 player, he falls through and does not seem to know which player/position that is most dangerous.

But that is the point, I think he is a bit to inflexible with regards to the back three/five.
He could have stabilized the defence by going to a back four earlier, putting Bentancour on for either one of the back three, or Reggie, and taken control of the central part of the pitch.
Instead, when we finally did go flat four, we had taken off PEH, and still had only two central midfielders on the pitch.

That was terrible, felt sorry Lloris he was great last night, midfield invisible, far too close to defence and no support to forwards. The night was made worse as we sit in front of Spurs version of Woolwich TV, a 100 minute nightmare.

He won’t go back 4 unless it’s drastic (he did at the end)
It’s his game and tactics

He wasn't bought to play RWB though. You're criticising the player and the purchase for a role he wasn't bought for. What you should be criticising is the appointment of a coach only to sack him 10 games later and have to massively change the system. Now we have players who don't suit the specific demands of the current coach. That's not on Royal.

Conte can't turn a donkey into a racer and last night result's, in my opinion, is down to some revolting individual performances. We did get some huge chances but we failed to convert most of them and we finally and rather undeservedly got the lead again, we couldn't defend at all.

I don't think anybody can dispute that we were second best on the night and that Southampton deserve their win.

At least, Betencour and Kulusevski made passable impressions and Moura, despite having a very poor game, never stopped trying and ended up with an assist. Reguillon isn't a world class wing back but I think he did what was expected of him. Romero, Kane and Son weren't that good by their own standards but they were head and shoulders above the rest of the team. All the others, Lloris included, were absolutely tinkle poor in my opinion. Southampton used they same strategy as last time and it worked better with 11 men on the pitch.

For me, this game shows two things: we've been punching above our weight since Conte came in and Conte's system works because despite some questionable form and lack of personel in certain positions, we're still in with a chance of finishing near the Top 4 (something that was, for me, totally impossible under Santo).

It's not the last game we're going to lose this season. We're definitely billion of light-years behind the Top 3 so the best we can hope for at the moment is staying in the race for as long as possible and buy as many players as Conte wants.

we have signed almost 2 new elevens since that window, I don't think we can blame anything on that now

A lot of the credit has to go to Hassenhutl , I think he's s top manager working on a very limited budget yet has the Saints playing good football and finishing mid table despite the odd big defeat he sticks to his principles and has then well organised especially in their collective pressing.
Could Pep do any better at Southampton with their budget ?

He's a good manager, they have taken a few massive beatings but he does pretty well against top half teams and they usually give it a good game. Pretty well organised.

I was in shock when 85 minutes in he was in a chase to get the ball near their corner flag and he didn't even put up a fight, is he really that slow. I thought he was signed as a pacy winger who could cut in - like a souped up version of Bergwyn.
