The Last Man Standing 17/18
In the big scheme of things, you're bang on. We're still in pole position for fourf place.
Thats as may be, but if we play like we did today CL is a pipe dream.

No, the reason we didn't have anyone to hold up the play is because we didn't have anyone that could get the ball it into Kane. You could have 4 CFs but if the ball doesn't get to them they aren't going to do anything. When Bentancur came on that changed and we got a foothold in the game and started to get the ball into Son and Kane.Exactly my point. This is why we need a centre forward. Kane prefers to play as a 10. We have noone who can hold up the play up front.
Blimey, what's up with you lot, where are the threat starters hiding? Let's get this show on the road:
Place: World's best stadium, N17, where else
Time: Wednesday 9th February 2022, 7.45
Time to show that we have shaken off our sexy aptitude for not winning when it counts.
Likely line up with the subs to make the difference if it ain't going to plan...did I hear that Southampton have lost just once in the last 8??
Lloris
Emerson Royal
Sanchez
Romero
Davies
Reguilon
Hojbjerg
Skipp (sub Bentancur 61)
Moura (sub Kulusevski, 61)
Son
Kane
COYS and Sonny to get back to scoring again........
Maybe, instead of trying to pick a fight after son scored, he could have tried made the defending better. Standing off Ward-Prowse TWICE IS NOT A GREAT TACTIC.Yeah I think that's a good point. You could see early we had a problem in midfield from a numbers perspective. That two of our midfielders were Winks and PEH just made it worse.
Defied belief that Conte left it continue for so long.

Only criticism of Bentancur tho was not knowing Ward-prowes needed to be closed down. He needed to be aware and stop Powes firing in the cross for their second goal. No, the reason we didn't have anyone to hold up the play is because we didn't have anyone that could get the ball it into Kane. they've had good performances in mid to lower half teams for whom the sky doesn't fall in if they lose a game, the pressure and expectation just isn't the same, look how maguire and stones dropped off
I like Sanchez, we can work with him, better the devil you know
Just reflecting on my way home.
That was a depressing watch. There was a feel good factor after Saturday when we played reasonably well and showed a lot of attacking intent. Tonight, Southampton had our number and they deserved the win.
I guess it illustrates we are not as good as we might like to think we are and there is still a huge amount of improvement work needed. Luckily we have the best manager for the task but I think we will have to expect substandard performances like tonight along the way.
Maybe I’m just trying to cheer myself up.
I have to say that being able to hold on to the ball is an important point. Moura can do it ocasionally and Kane keeps well and sometimes ends up with his frrekick that hes useless at! If you have more players with the skill to hold onto the ball the confidence will grow throughout the team..so ,yes a very important point..trouble is like you say most of the players can't do that..its about having the skillI think it's a combination of your two points. If you stand off us and give us 15m per pass, even donkeys like Sanchez, Winks, Davies et al will look like passable players. And sometimes teams do because they fear Son, Kane et al on the counter.
If you press us, even a little bit, those brainless donkeys collapse and fold like a pack of cards. Soton tried it. They got 4 points off us this season because of it.
It seems like we've only added to that problem with Royal and Hojbjerg, two more players who have concrete cinder-blocks for feet.
The problem only grows because the other players who we rely on, Dier et al, are also like this. I can't think of one press-resistant player in our entire side - no one can keep the ball when pressed.
A lot of the credit has to go to Hassenhutl , I think he's s top manager working on a very limited budget yet has the Saints playing good football and finishing mid table despite the odd big defeat he sticks to his principles and has then well organised especially in their collective pressing.I know it’s standard to just hate on all our players after a defeat, but I must say I was impressed with Southampton. Can see why they drew with City and beat West Ham away with an identical score line. Thought it was a good game of football actually, shame about the result….

I would have liked your post because I agreed with everything you said except for the last sentence which I disagreed with quite strongly.£26m did we pay for Royal. What a waste of money, as I said right from the start, when rumours about him joining us began. Can't run, can't pass, can't cross, lacks awareness. The only thing he's got, is 1 vs 1 defensively, where he's actually pretty good.
Coutinho had another good game for Villa, I see. A goal and two assists.
Agree we were beaten by the better team. Completely disagree that it had anything to do with our centre forward.Lets face it we were beaten by the better side on the day. From the first whistle they were all over us, had over 75% of the possession and we couldn't get out of our half. We got lucky with the own goal and scored from one of our very few chances. I hate to think what the XG was but it was certainly a thouroughly deserved result for Southampton. We conceded the initiative from the start and never wrestled it back. Even when we were ahead they were still all over us.
Yes we had Dier and Skipp out and our defence was pretty awful at times. But our midfield never established a foothold in the match. Reason - we don't have a centre forward who can hold the ball up and allow us time to get men forward. Kane had one of his No 10 games and never competed with their centre halves. Result - the ball just keeps coming back for us to defend. Southampton's passing game and crossing were almost always spot on, ours however was our usual poor delivery (the two goals excepted). Unless we sign a top centre forward who can hold the ball up we will always be susceptible to these type of teams.
Well done to Southampton, hard for me to say, but they really deserved all three points today. We simply must start on the front foot against Wolves on Sunday to try and repair some of the damage caused tonight.
