Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I know. Apologies if my comment appeared to not convey that. I once mentioned 'crucifiction' on here and was crucified for it. I'll always go for the easy laugh.o_O

Being dyslexic these thing tent to go over my head - I end up feeling very stupid but, I've learned to laugh at when happens now though. It's only taken 50 odd years.

Fair play. You got laugh at yourself sometimes, especially in your tent.;)

We now must solve this Wembley problem with a view to being ready for next season.
I'm not so bothered about going out except for sorting Wembley jinx?

Good switch to the 343 for the Arsenal game. I think it's vital to have this in our locker, to be able to adapt as teams figure out the high press 4231.

I think we should be adept at changing formation in game depending on what the opposition does. If they want to press high, we go 343 to give our deeper players passing options to get the ball into the attacking third in a good condition. If teams want to sit deep, we can go 4231 and get more central attacking players into danger areas and still get our width from the full backs.

This will mean Dier would become an even more important player because of his ability to drop back and push forward, while also giving opportunities to 2CV and Wimmer, who would never otherwise beat out Toby or Jan.

It does mean Wanyama would be an odd man out. Perfect for a 4231 but probably not best suited to dropping in as a CB given his instinct is to press and close down.

This adaptability will be vital though. Poch got a big break by purveying a system which generated an advantage, but now most teams can play it or are wise to it so if we are going to continue to punch above our weight, he will need to adapt. This beyond anything else is what made Fergie great IMO, changing with the times. Fundementally, you can generate such an advantage in football if you have a system that creates a unique advantage that you simply have to adapt lest you get figured out. The Rodgers/AVB/Martinez possession era has given way to the Poch/Klopp pressing era but now teams like Bournemouth and others lower down the league can play the system well the advantage is lessened. The shift to 3 at the back is in response to high pressing and it's great that we've gotten there early. I think Poch is gong to be a truly great leader and this is one of the reasons why. Hopefully he carries it off.

Stephen,
I did not know you were dyslexic and apologize if my intended light-hearted comment caused you any distress. I have several dyslexic friends so understand what challenges they have had.

It always intrigues me how people get so obsessed with formations. In reality there isn't too much difference in many of them. For instance our standard 4-2-3-1 last season is hardly any different to the sudden flavour of the month 3-4-2-1. Rose and Walker play as wide midfielders as opposed to full backs, Toby and Jan fan out to play wider than a usual centre back pairing, Dier drops in between them playing a role similar to the old 'libero' type role. Eriksen would typically play narrow to make a central midfield 2 with Dembele and Lamela would join Ali in the pockets of space in central areas in the last third of the pitch.

Yep. Football is so fluid nowadays that a formation is not much more than something that gives the players an idea where to stand for Kick Off.
