Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Nah happened to Benteke as well he has not been the same since his injury.

Not to bothered if Kane loses a bit of pace I always had him down as a Sheringham type player with his game anyway.

You can't plan football precisely or give teams headstarts - that is willfully missing the point though. What you can do through conditioning is plan when you expect the squad to peak. And I'm pretty certain it is something Poch and Perez do.

I am making an assumption that our slump was based on the CL (plus injuries and a lack of rotation options)...but that's only because I can't tell you for certain I'm right without actually being on Poch's staff. I'm just looking at the differences and similarities across a pattern of 4/5 seasons now.

You can believe we will recover or not, but all I'm saying is that I'm placing my steak in the ground on the side of believing that we will, given what has gone before.

I’m not willfully missing the point, maybe I’m just thick :) I get the theory of managing your squad to peak at certain times and buy into it a bit. But if for 3 seasons we’ve started slowly and it’s ultimately seen us play a game of catch up that we would never win, you have to believe that a fella as smart as Poch would do something differently. I just think there is too much else going on, too much other evidence that says to me that this season will be harder for us.

You do make a good point in another post though that we’re going to have ups and downs. When things were going well for us, I saw a lot of “I want Poch here for 15 years”, “I want him to be our Fergie” type posts. Slumps will come if he stays that long and are part of the territory. And perhaps the squad I’ve emotionally invested so much in and have a massive affection for won’t be the one that brings Poch and Levy their greatest successes at Tottenham.

And I honestly believe this is a serious slump but nothing more. As long as Levy didnt break any promises to Poch, I’m confident he will eventually get us through this bad patch and he is the man I want to see at the helm for the next 10 years.

Agree although I wouldnt say its a serious slump yet, we are still in the top 6 after a few games:D What I do think and thought before the start of this season is that a lot of this squad needs freshening up, theyre a combination of been here too long where performances can become sterile or at an age where Pochs demands get too much to perform consistently or in some cases both.....

If given the chance I think poch would sort out the slow start, but things have conspired against us this season.
After the WC we had half a squad knackered but some able replacements waiting and to go who had no or little time at the WC. But those replacements have been unable to get fit, lamela, winks and wanyama even rose. Then Hugo and dele getting injured, son being away and a lot of pointless mins on international duty for the already struggling players has had to been a spanner in the works.

Apparently theres a report in The Times today saying that players have complained about fatigue and asked for more days off? Also Robbie Keane has said we tried to sign four players but were priced out of moves....

sorry but the WC, Asian Cup, injuries were all known way in advance.
hugo and dele's injuries were unfortunate but given the WC we sould have gotten Vorm playing all the preseason games instead of gazzaniga.

wanyama's injury wasn't handled well - he had a relapse,
iirc correctly we took a long time to get to surgery for winks
but we knew that too...

and if the young ones aren't good enough - why didn't we upgrade? instead of hoarding players we don't want to play? in a year where the WC is going to require more legs than usual.

sure its been a hard year, but we are making it harder for ourselves too

He was never the fastest anyway but losing even 5-10% of his pace would be a big deal and top speed is only one thing. The injury may factor in his acceleration, turning, strength at holding off defenders, jumping, his ability to play twister, and his shooting. Fingers crossed that we are worrying for nothing.

Interesting article. This is the main thing many have concerns about, and this comes from Klopp whose players won the league twice and got to a CL final:

“You need change to make the next step in the team’s development,” Klopp once said. “If I say ‘go left’, they would say, ‘you’ve told us that 200 times, we don’t want to hear your voice any more’.” Five seasons is a long time for the same players to be hearing the same voice, on the same training ground, dispensing the same messages.

If anyone has access to The Times article, it would be good to get that posted here.

It’s incredibly disappointing, as I’m sure it’s been sourced from one of our players - unless they have just taken massive liberty with the fact that the squad stayed in the new lodge after the Inter game. But to confidently say that some of our players have complained, that’s the kind of article we’ve never actually seen written under Poch because there are usually no leaks.

I’d also wonder which player it is - it’s not gonna be Kane. It’s not gonna be Son, who’s just talked about wanting to get back playing and doesn’t worry about fatigue. Trippier and Toby just got rested so it can’t be them. Rose, Davies and Aurier have all been rotated. Wanyama isn’t playing. Winks is just coming back. Dembele and Dier have been rested and rotated in games this season. Dele and Sissoko have been injured. Moura has been rotated and must be delighted to be finally playing. Ditto Lamela.

That leaves Eriksen. And to be honest, having just gone through the the squad, it makes no sense that it could be any one of them. So I’m going to choose to believe their source is an agent causing trouble :) the knives always come out for the club in crisis and this week it is our turn.

"If I say go left', they should say, 'you've told us that 200 times, and we've won two league titles, we want a third, so yes we will go left."
Exactly, but thats the point. If a team who have won two titles question the same intense methods after a few years, what hope is there for a squad who have put in the same intense work and have nothing to show for it? The best of squads are cyclical and need a reset every so often, ours is no different.....

I think the point that I’m trying to get at (which I’m admittedly not explaining well) is that it’s a trade off. Our great winter form is usually the consequence of a poorer period at the start of the season where we are working our players up into their peak level, so that we make the most of our conditioning advantage when other teams start tiring or having to deal with more competitions. But we couldn’t get the great peak at winter unless we went through the tough period in working our own players up to that level.

I don’t think there is an easy answer, because if you choose to get your advantage early in the season (like Klopp does) you may then see the risk beginning to burn out later in the season (like Klopp teams have done - they never finish a season as well as they start it)

The answer is simply to have a deep squad so that you have quality in every position regardless of what happens and you can allow players to peak at different times over the year. Which is exactly what Klopp has done now by getting depth in to his squad and it’s exactly what Poch is trying this year by being clear on rotation from the off, because we have more options.

Absolutely agree its a very easy article to write when there are clear fatigue issues - the only thing that concerns me is that The Times one of the more reliable news sources and its not exactly beyond the realms of possibility. I havent personally seen the article so no idea the depths of detail it goes to....

Yeah, that concerns me too. It’s one of those things that we haven’t seen under Poch before. Either one of the players that he wanted to sell - Toby for example - is causing brick (which would be ridiculous considering he was just rested) or an agent is stirring trouble. I just can’t think which player it would be that it makes sense to suddenly go to the Times for this...but they are reputable so it is disappointing to think where it came from.

It wasn’t an anonymous leak, but Rose broke ranks in 2 consecutive summers.
