Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I'm a big fan of Wrighty. Proud to play for Arsenal and England. If he wore Lilywhite he'd be up there with Mabbsy as a club legend. One of the few Gooners I'd like to have a pint with.

This!
Old skool.
He gave it, he took it, he never shirked any of it and he has never lacked humility. A top bloke. Similarly, for all I hated the Donkey, I respected him for his loyalty to them and refusing to join man in a raincoat when he arrived on our doorstep.

Interesting that as a team we have a reputation for possession football. Results at home have been best when we've played on the counter attack.
All three games with low possession were games where we took the lead very early or relatively early. Against Real we were dominant from the start and created several chances up to our well deserved opener. I the two other games it was much more coincidental, it could just as easily have gone the other way and the games and possession stats would have looked very different.

That changes our approach, our opponent's approach, confidence and of course the final score.

Playing on the counter attack is easier most of the time. At home it's usually not a choice we can make as most of our opponents will be happy with a draw.

I'd also add, the teams that we typically concede possession to are either superior (e.g. Madrid) to us, or at least pose extreme threats on counter (Pool, Dortmund).

I still think at end of season, outside of maybe 5 or 6 games, we will still heavily be a possession team.

Basically this. It's not by accident that we concede posssession to Liverpool,Dortmund,Madrid. It's not because they are better than us, it is because that is the way to play them and gives us a the best chance of winning.

Give them no space to counter, nullify their pacey players and then expose their sh*t defenders and unmotivated midfielders/forwards, who think it is beyond them to do anything resembling defending.

The only surprising thing is how long it took Poch to instigate this considering how effing brilliant he is.

those stats say we should be playing counter attack football more often

Not really

They show that it suits certain teams and occasions

No good counter attacking a team that’s set up to sit deep as they won’t budge

Palace regularly had a back 4 on the edge of their area... Swansea had 5 and they never moved from there. There would have been nothing to counter and just an isolated forward for each side

Completely unimpressed with some of our football recently. I realise with Wanyama and Alderweireld out we are forced into this situation, but we have not played well in this 352. The fluidity of the past few season's in a 4231 or 343 has not translated, and I have seen very few signs of it coming back. It's good for counter attacking, but in games where we are trying to play football it doesn't work.

This may feel knee jerk to some, coming in the middle of the Dortmund game, but we've not looked great for a while now.

I don’t think it’s entirely unfair what you are saying.

It may well be that we typically have a tougher November as we ramp up our fitness for a Christmas period where we generally do well; but there’s something I’m not quite liking about our team that I can’t quite put my finger on.

I discussed earlier this season that maybe our flexibility in approach has benefitted us in certain games but may come at the cost of fluidity (which may be one reason we didn’t alter our approach away to Liverpool last season for example) and maybe we are getting used to playing a possession game again...maybe.

But there’s just something that isn’t quite working. Yes Dele has more attention on him this season but the simple response is to give the ball simply and wait for a real opportunity where he can go one on one. He gets 3 players on him and tries to beat them all.

Dier has had some good games but some of his poor concentration has been the reason we lose games.

We just seem to be making too many poor decisions right now.

Poch mentions in his book that he can’t treat Dele the same way he used to because he isn’t just a young player anymore, he is someone that has contributed to the club and can’t be shouted at too easily for example. But I do wonder if maybe we are treating these players as too big time too soon. Maybe they still need some of the hard discipline. Maybe they are thinking they have arrived too soon and are forgetting what has gotten them to this point.

This may be a total over reaction, and in a months time it may look very silly. Often fans get worried about their team and start drawing bad conclusions when the team is out of form or after a bad loss. But some of these things - Dele making poor decisions or Dier’s silly concentration lapses - are things unrelated to fitness and are more related to mentality or concentration. I also see a lot of us play acting now, looking to buy free kicks. I used to think it was the sign of us acting like a really big club but are the players focussing too much on the dark arts and not enough on the honest work? Poch is seemingly loathe to make too many demands of the players publicly anymore, which again I take as a top manager protecting his players as the others do...but are they being treated too much like world stars before they have achieved anything?

We haven't. We've had very few great performances this season. But, we have qualified top of our group in the CL, and we are top 4 in the league. Not bad considering that we haven't been firing on full cylinders yet.
