Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Didn't see it anywhere else -> http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/football/article4668777.ece

Good for Poch, says something about club direction

Manchester United have been dealt a blow after John McDermott, Tottenham Hotspur’s highly regarded head of coaching and player development, rebuffed an approach to join the club as part of a planned overhaul of their academy.

The Times reported last week that United had earmarked him for a key role in revamping their youth set-up.

It is understood that McDermott rejected the opportunity in order to stay with Tottenham, where he has a strong working relationship with Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach.

United are believed to have made their initial approach for McDermott, who oversaw the rise of Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll, among others, before Christmas.

I mean, how much more proof do we need that for the first time since Burky we have a plan beyond our reputation? Wonderful news.

Indeed. And the thing is, we all know Man United are the Biggest Club Ever (tm) and can probably offer a bit more money... but assuming we're at least in the same ballpark salary-wise, then Spurs have to be one of the most attractive clubs to work for in football right now. Best training ground in the country - perhaps second best only to Real Madrid in all of Europe. A manager with a clear project and, apparently the backing of the board to implement it. A new stadium on the horizon which will be "state of the art" for the likely duration of your time at the club. Young, exciting players, the bulk of whom are still 2 or 3 years away from their peak, and yet already people are whispering of a title challenge this season...

Leave all that and go work under van Gaal? I think not. Not with the shadow of Old Fergie hanging over everything you do... a host of pretenders to the crown all desperately trying to hold together a disintegrating raft. It's a club in desperate need of renewal. The difference though is that it's going to be years before a clear direction emerges... years of bitterness and false starts and at least one guaranteed "complete staff clear-out" over the next couple of seasons.

(I'm hoping the same thing happens at Arsenal when Wenger leaves in a couple of years!)

If you have half a brain and you work in football, Spurs is where you'd want to be at this moment in time. And anyone who goes to United right now will be chewed up and spat out during one of the imminent regime-changes.

Thanks milo, interesting article.

As it says... will the extra training sessions at this stage of the season lead to player burnout or increased fitness? One would like to think the fitness experts are on top of this, but having seen the Ar.se and Liverpool suffer a string of injuries, one wonders what those fitness gurus are playing at.

Just in case anyone is sad enough to wonder... in terms of distance covered, there is 169 km between the top placed team Bournemouth 2484km and the tenth placed club Southampton on 2315km after 21 games. That is 8km per game which is 800m per outfield player. Is that a lot? Maybe. It is 9m per minute per player.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino intent on leaving a lasting legacy at White Hart Lane

Argentine has constantly looked to youth in his efforts to improve Spurs as he looks towards mounting a Premier League title challenge

Mauricio Pochettino is already working on his Tottenham Hotspur legacy even though he still has more than three years remaining on his White Hart Lane contract.

Tottenham head coach Pochettino is winning a host of admirers, including some in the corridors of power at Manchester United, but the club are confident he will stay to work on the project he so often refers to.

With Champions League qualification and even the Premier League title a possibility this season, the prospect of moving into a new stadium and one of the country’s best academy set-ups, Tottenham insiders believe their club is currently a more attractive proposition than United.

That view appears to have already been echoed by head of coaching and player development John McDermott, who is expected to stay at Spurs despite United’s interest in him.

Pochettino has not given any indication that he is thinking of his next move away from Tottenham, but the Argentine is so determined to leave the club in the best state possible when he eventually departs that he is even watching the club’s Under-8s.

“Always, my decisions are for the present but for the future too,” said Pochettino. “I work for if one day I am not here to give the legacy, it’s always my way to work not only for the present and for the quick results. It’s always to create the future.

“In football you can work only for results and don’t think about tomorrow. But for me it’s always to try to create good things for the present and for the future too.

“Sometimes, we watch the under-8, under-9, under-10s. Our passion is to watch football and when you have the possibility to watch, it’s a special moment to detect the talent – sometimes we spend a lot of time watching the training sessions of the under-8s and under-9s, 10, 11, 12s. We enjoy that a lot. More professionally, we look at the under-14s, 15s and 16s.”

Josh Onomah is the latest teenager off the Pochettino production line and the 18-year-old is expected to be involved in the FA Cup third-round replay against Leicester City on Wednesday night.

Pochettino works closely with McDermott, who he rates as one of the best in the business, over how best to develop and introduce the club’s youngsters into the first team.

“The good thing when we arrived here was a very great feeling with John McDermott and the academy,” said Pochettino. “We started an overview of all the young players to share the opinion with John and all the coaches, and we learned a lot about the academy. Today we can see the different players with the opportunity to arrive and to create the space too for the possibility for them to train with us.

“John is a really important person for me and I think after 10 years here you can see the evolution of the players. After 18 months working with John, I can say he is one of the best academy managers that I have met.”

Attacking midfielder Onomah was born close to Tottenham’s Enfield training base, which has 11 outdoor pitches that are often all occupied with various age-group games and coaching sessions.

“Josh Onomah is in a very good process,” said Pochettino. “He is very young, very mature and, step by step he is building a presence. I think he is a very nice guy and a great talent. He has big potential for the future. He is in a very good place and he deserves to be involved with the first team.”

Onomah and the rest of Tottenham’s youngsters are all drilled in the Pochettino philosophy and the 43-year-old has vowed not to change his approach to combat Leicester’s physical style on Wednesday night.

Having drawn at White Hart Lane in the Cup, Leicester then snatched a Premier League victory against Spurs but Pochettino insists his team will continue to try to play their way past the Foxes.

“We cannot change the way we play and play like Leicester,” said Pochettino. “They are very physical and very strong. We have to find a solution. We have to play and make the ball move quicker, find space, switch the play and try to make them make mistakes. This is our philosophy, not to try to fight with them.”

"Got the faintest of nicks", my arse.

I can see why he's still sore about it.

Yeah. Big Ron: 'the ref didn't have any other choice'. Er, yeah he did, Ron. Book Owen for diving.

The look on Poch's face says it all, he's gutted, you can see the weight of his country on his shoulders in that one moment.

This was a game that England actually played quite well in and deserved a good result, but it was def a textbook example of an England player diving which the media conveniently ignore cos only foreign players do that, innit.

He is slowly starting to talk more about football as a philosophy. The guy seems like a real scholar of the game. I just keep hoping that he sees Spurs as the club where he will build and maintain a true legacy. Give him everything he needs Levy. Please.

One thing to be aware of here is that he wasn't being offered the same job at Man Utd. He was effectively being offered a job one rung below where he is now. I would like to think that John would have rejected the next level up job at Man Utd as well, but I'm glad that he wasn't offered that one and we never got the chance to find out.

The Man Utd academy job is actually quite a difficult one at the moment. Emirates Marketing Project have ridiculously good academy facilities and are also footing the bill to send their academy intake to a decent private school (and apparently their youth players are achieving good grades there). It is allowing Emirates Marketing Project to now take the cream of the crop up there with Man Utd now ending up with the left-overs.

Indeed.... I would say starting with a new contract. There is nothing like an improved salary at an unexpected and contractually unnecessary time to help build even more goodwill and loyalty. Pochettino is the most important person at Tottenham Hotspur and I feel that right now the club is on the cusp of creating a real legacy, there seems to be a real harmony at the club from top to bottom. Even the first team squad players who aren't getting a look in seem to be quietly biding their time. Daniel Levy - do not let this man leave!

Not just that, he would be answering to Nicky Butt.

Is Poch ill? He is looking pale recently and doesn't seem right imo.

Funny I've noticed in the last couple of games that the cameras have panned onto him seemingly appearing back out of the dressing room, which would be normal if it happens just after half time, but it's normally half way through the 2nd half!

Noticed Pochettino has been going in and out ofthe change room during the the last few matches. He admitted he went to toilet and so missed an incident involving Alli who threw the ball at the face of a Sunderland player. Wonder if the pressure is getting to Pochettino.
