Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Anyone who thinks Poch is inflexible has not been watching most of the games.

Lack of DM usage when we badly required it last season
The use of inverted wingers no matter how crowded the midfield is
High line +suicidally high up FBs even when not using first choice players

Poch may alter certain things, but his stubbornness and lack of flexibility (the inverted wingers & never use midfield width particularly drive me crazy) is plainly obvious

Couple of posters have talked about is Poch the man to win the league = no, too young, too inflexible, too inexperienced. However, winning the league is not his mandate, he was hired to get the best out of a younger squad, hold our 5th/6th position, challenge for 4th and trophies, get us through the stadium build years.

Well Stop! Hammer time and you have said what YOU would do if you were in charge, however what you or I think should be done is not really the point. And that does not mean he is not flexible, he has a system that he believes will work but I have seen him change during games and those who believe he has not done so need to look a bit deeper then their opinions of how we should play.

None of what I have said means I agree with the way he sets the team up but I do not believe he is inflexible.

I'd say it shows the inflexibility of some of the fans just as much.

High line and inverted wingers/no width is constantly brought up as a negative, regardless of how well we played or if it was actually an issue.

How many times do we have to see our midfield try to pass and move into a space occupied by 5+ opposition players?

I like Poch, and in theory I like the system concept, in reality, it remains my personal opinion that had we kept Lennon last season, and used him as a sub only (when whichever of Townsend/Lamela was having their typical poor game), brought him on with orders to stretch the field, get behind opposing FB, we would have been 5-6 points better off, think about that from a position in table perspective.

Indeed there were times where the system wasn't working, the crowded midfield rendered Spurs more impotent than Stephen Hawking... but we kept pushing our soft coc.k at the world's tightest anus, we were never going to get in.

oh my days....this and NWND's little nugget yesterday are up for quotes of the year.

I was a huge critic of poch last season, but the criticism of him playing no DM or wingers. Well he's started with dier in midfielder and we've just bought njie. No strictly a winger but definitely that different option mentioned is needed at times

If we play a real DM minded player this season, it will show learning. Re Njie, I suspect he will play the inverted winger brick again or though the middle.

Playing Dier shows he wants to though to me (you watch mason start saturday). Njie probably will play inverted in the main, but at least he offers something different to the rest of the tippy tappy players; it's that change in approach which we lack.

I watch pretty much every game live, tv or a stream. Missed very few. V little improvement in performance from TS bar a handful of games. This is the season where we will see what he's about

Would be a great start to see beharino (BIG IF), chadli or N'Jie play off the right and give a bit of much needed balance in the forward positions. If he stays, for the life of me I have no idea why Townsend isn't played on the left as he can often look much much better there.

Regular subs before 75mins when we are in trouble would also be welcome.

Has Chadli ever played well on the right? It seems to negate all threat from his game.

If that is the case and you still believe Poch is inflexible then I suggest you are missing things.

Yeah a couple, Thought he did well. Remember he came on against Soton and looked dangerous. The other thing to bare in mind is that the three can interchange

I think that interchanging would be great and would hope that we are moving towards that but I would be disappointed if that meant that Chadli spent much time on the right because I don't think that he is a threat there.

Against AC Milan he came in from the right and walloped a screamer into the net with his left peg.

For the record, Stephen Hawking wasn't impotent....

DM wasn't badly needed. We finished 5th FFS. The team needed to defend better, yes, but our worst results like losing to Stoke, Saudi Sportswashing Machine and getting smashed 3-0 by Liverpool and 4-1 by Emirates Marketing Project and whatnot at the beginning of the season was WITH a DM in Vapour, who Poch decided eventually he didn't rate and ditched him for Mason. The team started playing better. Where was the option of playing a DM? We didn't have a viable one and Mason and Bentaleb worked well the majority of games. His use of Dier clearly shows he thinks it's a problem so what you say is inflexible is actually VERY flexible in that he wanted and started the season with a DM but it wasn't working so instead of persevering with his original system with inferior players he brought a kid in who was more a terrier than a DM but got us playing forward better and it worked. It was a good option knowing be couldn't buy a decent DM until next season.

He found a workable solution that got us 5th though- surely the OPPOSITE of inflexibility. He binned his entire set-up in midfield as it wasn't working.

You keep going on about inverted wingers. Can you care to explain the times Lennon played on the right wing for a period? When Townsend played on the left? When Lamela did? I was at some of those games when we played with conventional wingers.

As the guy said above too, you can't say lack of width was a massive issue last season, we didn't struggle to create or score, we were the top scorers outside the top 4. Majority of teams these days get width from their full backs and have wide forwards that cut inside. Its not a problem, it's the quality of variation that's lacking. Ie our only pace options are Lennon and Townsend, neither of whom have been consistently good for a few seasons.

N'jie signing shows Poch is aware of this too.
