Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I agree, until we get affected by any of his foibles it's an open book, though I also agree with Milo that it's interesting to take note of previous criticisms…

I, frankly, don't know what to expect.

I am excited by the new season and the appointment of Poch. I just don't want to see BoL's heart broken again.

I'm looking forward to it, but I must be honest, I am not wildly excited…I hope for the best, but last season really sucked the wind out of sails, and between Bale going and watching that clown disgrace our club, last season was one of the most unedifying I have seen at our club in relation to the potential we have.

Poch needs time. I am not expecting miracles.

Right now I'd settle for a top six finish, signs of improvement on the pitch and doing the double over the lot down the road.

I think we're gonna do really well.

Poch has never had the option of playing with a big squad before. He's wanted to play in the way a top club would play, but he's been at smaller clubs. I think with the apparent meticulousness he prepares his training sessions, and his fitness, I think he's well aware of what having a big squad of quality players will do for him. I'd be stunned if he runs the same small group of players into the ground while not integrating others much at all. It would make no sense to take that line and I don't think he will. As for making a like for like sub, it's because that's the type of manager he is. If we want a 'throw a lot of **** at the wall and see what sticks' type approach, we should go back to Sherwood. The system works, it will have its weaknesses as always, but the point of it is that you have been battering a team this way all game and this is what you've trained all week, to suddenly change isn't the done thing.

Not sure avb is best described as a clown, charlatan perhaps... I personally prefer... Mr super tactics DVD man.

Tim done alright in tough circumstances.

Serious question does that mean that we will be punching above our weight under or par with it?

I hope that you are right. I am all aboard the Poch bus. I love your optimism but am a little old and jadded to believe that it will turn out as you think.

I also do not think with subs the choice is just the Sherwood approach or the AVB approach. There are plenty of progressive managers who make tactical changes in game, so I think it is wrong to consider a plan a only coach as the only right way to do things.

Good post.

No one right approach here. One point worth remembering here though is that Poch usually used Lambert up front (31 starts this season). Often you see managers try to change things by bringing on a Lambert type striker, someone physical that you can loft the ball to. With him on the pitch that most obvious and most visible change isn't really an option. Doesn't mean nothing is being done though.

By the same token I don't think the absolute only subs Poch will make will be like for like. There's probably tonnes of tactical changes in game that fans haven't and won't notice.

I think Steff was referring to Sherwood as a clown mate! Stats make him look better than he was didn't it? What was our pattern of play under him? Why did we concede so many silly goals? What about the way he conducted himself in front of a camera?
Anyway he's History!

Agreed, and also changes that are noticeable, without being obvious. Like changing to a more attacking full back when you need a goal. Or, like Klopp once did, putting on a more ball playing centre back to dictate play and play good longer balls at the end.

Haven't watched Southampton enough or been aware enough of Poch to have a real opinion on what he actually does. Will be interesting to see how he does for us.

It depends what the squads look like at the start of the season. I would say probably we'd be punching above.

Sorry I didn't explain myself properly, I meant managers that stick to a system regardless of opposition or tactical flow of a said game, are they more or less likely to punch above their weight. For example wenger, an example of a very good manager that sticks to his system, Jose is an example of someone who changes due to circumstance and opposition, perhaps Jose is an example that would be seen as a much better manager than wenger, so let's say rafa then, who again changes due to opposition and circumstance, who in their career would be seen as punching above their weight.

They are both history, I enjoyed watching Tims team more than avb, yes we let some silly goals but we scored much more under him than avb.

Any way let's move on.

Of the teams that finished above us, Wenger is the only manager who I think sticks rigidly to a system and obviously Ferguson before he retired changed things quite a lot depending on the opposition.

I agree and I think that it is a little early to make assumptions about how Poch will approach things with us. I will be watching closely and with great interest.

For those who have followed Pochettino at Southampton and even at Espanoyl, how does his pressing style compare with Bielsa's especially as seen in the Bilbao team of 2011/2012?

In fact, are there other top-tier/relatively top-tier teams in Europe that employ a similar style to what Pochettino has done?

I have to admit, I always worry that such pressing styles lead to burn-out in the latter parts of seasons...
