Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I have to admit, I always worry that such pressing styles lead to burn-out in the latter parts of seasons...

Why do you worry more about burn-out with a pressing style than other defensive approaches? Which pressing teams would you give as examples of sides that regularly burn out through this approach?

Pressing by it's nature is a lot of physical effort that can cause burn-out; if it's overdone it seems only natural. For example, when was the last time WE had a pressing style?
I definitely got the impression that Bilbao side of two years ago (the one that knocked out Manure from the EL) burned out eventually. In fact I'm sure Sid Lowe said as much during the Football Weekly podcasts near the end of that season as well. Didn't the team also tire of Bielsa's methods eventually anyway? I'm sure the constant physical demand to press was a factor.
I also get the impression that Bielsa's teams generally eventually tire of this method and demand as the season's go by.

Thanks.

I don't have any firm thoughts on it. I think that all systems have their strengths and weaknesses. Obviously the pressing system requires very fit players but if it is well executed, I would not think that it is any more tiring than defending deep. Also, retaining possession should give the team a chance to rest which other systems do always provide.

I think there has to be a time and a place for the pressing game though. If you're 2-0 up for example at home to a team in the relegation zone, you won't need to press as hard. Just press hard from the get go, force teams into errors, dominate possession but dominate the game too. GHod forbid that we're ever 4-0 down again, but in that case, pointless pressing again, we aren't coming back.

We have a big squad, a very talented squad. If managed well from Poch we may not even see "burnout"

I agree. I think that a one size fits all approach for a club of our size and resources is a little short sighted.

Yeah, as I say just an impression I have from watching Bilbao. I'm intrigued to see how the system will work with our squad. I'm interested to hear from others about other teams who employ similar tactics, especially 'top-tier' sides from across Europe.

I'm just excited for the season, more than I thought I'd be. Should be a good summer, World Cup, pre-season, new signings, then get ready for a new season with a new manager and hopefully signs of a new philosophy drilling into the club.

How would people compare Fergie's Utd, Wenger's mob, Pellegrini's City, Liverpool last season, with Poch's Saints in terms of high intensity pressing football.......those teams I mentioned seem to play good entertaining passing football without an apparent need to play a high line pressing game.

Is the Bielsa/Poch way more suited to smaller clubs with young hardworking players who have to use a certain playing system to close the gap with clubs with more money/resources?

I suppose if Poch can get more talented players to bust a gut at a club like Spurs then this pressing style could actually be a way of closing the gap with the top clubs above us. It may only be effective for a season or two with the same set of players but if it achieves the required goal of CL qualification or even a title challenge then great I guess.:)

The comment about him having a core that he focusses on seems kind of redundant. One of the biggest complaints I read on here was that we had too many players for the manager to even know who is first choice 11 were. By having a manager who picks out his best team, we will hopefully see some consistency in our play

Same for me

Me too; it'll certainly be interesting to see who our first purchase will be (and the first player sold)

...before an opening day 1-0 defeat at QPR thanks to Zamora's ****

Of the teams that finished above us, Wenger is the only manager who I think sticks rigidly to a system and obviously Ferguson before he retired changed things quite a lot depending on the opposition.

Didn't Didn want to mention fergerson as I thought some may think its a unfair comparison with Wenger. But as you did, and I agree, who is a more likely to punch above their weight someone who sticks to a system or someone who changes due to opposition/circumstance. how does that relate to mopo?

The high level pressing I have heard isn't necessarily more running but running more intelligently. I think Pochetinno is quoted as saying as much.

poch will have to manage european games too so i think he'll take some time to introduce his philosophy with more players and in heavier rotation. that said i think that we will see improvements from fringe players - holtby who can do great 1-2 and through pass, capoue who is physical and can get stuck in, even siggy who has a great engine. another challenge for poch would be to drop fans favourites like rose and townsend - who lose the ball too often.

so i'm going to give him time. Next season is all about experimentation and drilling so Europa and no trophies. In the second season I expect us to be challenging for something - hopefully a Europa win and CL entry - while we also start to challenge for Top 4. Trophy/Top4 is an expectation I would not dare to think of until Years 4/5.

Cant agree to be honest if rafa b got the job would he have been given 4 years to get it right?
Same for fdb.
No chance if things were not looking good by seasons end the pressure would have ramped right up.
I don't accept that we should wait 4 years for success most of the squad will have left by then and jo average will be the replacements.
He can just about have this season for me to start getting it right then I want us back where we belong.
