Mathys Tel

I thought he had some good moments vs Fulham. Loved how he convened with our fans after the match as well. Must be difficult to come into a team in so much disarray. Took his goals well for France the other day. He played as a striker, right? Hopefully he can blossom with us.

I think it's completely fair to discuss whether a player is worth 40 mill or not, but the sample size in this case is obviously very small. Ideally we'd have him on loan for a year or so. Let's see, I hope it works out.

If he did, I'm assuming it was a front 2. They have a striker who plays for Rennes, so Tel up top with him, or out wide

I’ll be honest, I’ve picked that up from here, that’s the agreed future fee should we decide to keep him right?

£45m.

The fan bit for me was great. Likely because of his experience in Germany and how the treat fans

€55m (£45m) + a €10m loan fee. United apparently agreed a £50m deal, but wouldn't pay a £5m loan fee. The casual use of € and £ in various reports makes it difficult.
£45m is within budget and a good punt if we can get a long contract. boy's got talent, just need the right coach right now

Don't forget the strange nuances of the deal.
The loan itself was EUR10m which is extremely expensive for 6 months, but we've already sunk that cost.
I think Bayern were clever with that... they stipulated quite a high loan fee, so we'll feel more obligated to follow it through in the summer.
The summer option to buy is EUR55m (which can stretch to 60 if we win everything ever)

So we already paid the big chunk, just £45m left to keep him forever, or we walk away... so in our Spurs minds it is just a £45m decision... then we get our financial calculators out and reckon it is only £9m per year for 5 years.... and then we think backwards and say "hell, we paid EUR10m for 6 months, so £9m per year is a steal... especially if we eventually sell him for a profit which is likely because he's only a kid"

So for all those reasons, we'll do the deal I think.
Just bumping my own post because @Baleforce is a wilfully naughty boy

I just think, with Odobert and Moore already in place in his position, just spend all the money on Dibling and Delap instead. Address our big needs, rather than collect a prospect without a strategy

45m is not a good punt, that's a very expensive gamble. Maybe we should do it maybe we shouldn't but there's really no way of describing it as a good deal.

No.
You just said above you thought £60m was the agreed future fee. It's maybe three quarters of that.

I didn’t realise we’d paid anything already, overall, keeping him is going to cost us around 60m.

The comparison in my original point was that Bale cost us 8m.

So we should, imo, be seeing a hell of a lot more from him for his perceived value.

I think the Bale fee at the time was one of the most expensive ever paid for a teenager at that point. Its probably comparable now to at least the £35m we spent on Gray

Inflation is a thing certainly.

But it was 5m with add ons.

It wasn’t a big money move for a player of that age even then imo. United had paid 5 times that for Rooney a few years prior.

The overall point is the expectation. The money being talked about for Tel is not punt money, it’s established big player money.

at that price point we pay for players who have had a wonder year in the world cup or from recently relegation teams. i've watched a bit of tel and can say for his age, he has a lot of attributes going for him... physicality, heading, dribbling, pace and happy to pay the price. i've read that he's captained a junior french squad in a major european competition and the french people have high hopes for him. (some say he's the next Thierry Henry ! )

TO ME, its a good punt and he will do better under another coach who can play to his strength and not against a wall of defenders in the penatlty box.
