Lack of goals

A midfield 3 of Eriksen - Sandro - Holtby would create more and control the game better than Paulinho and Dembele.

Great point.. In the games ive seen us play so far this season Dembele and Paulinho are too pedestrian, the system AVB plays would suit Sandro, Eriksen and Holtby far better with one player holding. I find our play generally under AVB compared to Harry is very slow.

I think at home we should be more adventurous. Holtby and Eriksen can play in the same team and i dont think AVB thinks he can put them both in for some reason.

Instead of ****ging of our best player today maybe Mulletperm whould address the fact that we had nothing down our left flank all game

Calm down fella. It was an observation on our lack of goals. Not necessarily ****ging off Townsend.

You can't deny that when playing on the right he will, for the majority of the time, cut inside onto his left. The way West Ham set up defensively completely nullified any threat he had as he was running into a wall of defenders. In my opinion if AVB had put him on the left, where you rightly say that was nothing from us, he would be far more effective.

we are so obvious, whenever Siggy/Chadli on the left, Townsend/Lamela on the right get the ball 9.5 times out of 10 they will cut inside.....its bolllox, its easy to suss out and thats why teams are able to defend so well and easily against us.

Soldado, Defoe, and Ade will have no decent chances to get on the end of, we no longer flash balls across the box that can cause panic in the opposition defence.

you know what, its pointless playing a striker the way AVB has us set up.....we may as well play 4-6-0, have tonnes of possession, all the time in the world for the attackers to cut inside, ponder, pass, take a pot shot from 25 yards every once in a while, and try to nick games 1-0

I put this on another thread but it also applies here........

I'll start my rant with a question.....

How many goals have Defoe and Soldado scored (not including the 2 Soldado penalties) in the league in 2013?

The answer almost unbelievably is ONE... Yes, one goal.

It was obvious that playing a lone, small striker was not producing anywhere enough goals so what do we do in the summer......we buy another one. Both Defoe and Soldado are hardly ever on the ball and are no real threat outside the box.

We should have spent £25 million on Benteke - quick, strong, big and six years younger than Soldado. To have not bought a striker of his type is shamefully neglectful and if not rectified in January we have no chance of top four as we are just not, and will not, score enough goals.

There were obviously also other things wrong yesterday which other people have already mentioned so won't repeat all of them but this lack of a real threat upfront has been there since Berbatov left.

I'm sure people will disagree with me but just one league goal from our lone striker in 2013 ( still shaking my head in disbelief as I type ) means something is seriously wrong..

Benteke wont make a difference, just like Ade wont......its not the size or shape of the striker. We are rubbish in the final third at creating, have been for long under AVB

We have enough shots, we just need to be better at placing them on goal and out of the goalkeeper's reach. We're averaging 17,9 shots a game, that's second in the Premier League as it stands (after Liverpool). We led that statistic up until yesterday, when we only had about 14-15 shots. We need to hit the frame more, we need to be a bit more lucky, and a bit more clinical. Aaaand, we need to want to continue to score goals after we lead by more than one goal (Norwich game, why on earth didn't we just keep on pressuring them for a third and fourth goal?).

Benteke has scored 4 league goals already this season and got 19 last year. He is playing in a team that in all round play does not create as many chances as us.

The mere fact that he is 8 inches taller than our two strikers means he will win, and score goals from headers and so offer something different -let alone the power and pace in other areas of the pitch....

I am surprised that you think 'size or shape of the striker' will not make any difference!

with AVB's system, we dont play to the strengths of the strikers, we play to the strengths of the inverted attackers, Siggy/Chadli on the left and Townsend/Lamela on the right. Their effectiveness seems to be more important than utilising the strikers better

if you have a Benteke, who is going to provide crosses from the right areas for him to be effective??the full backs? Rose and Walker are not that good with their supply from the wide areas

Benteke playing for Villa cannot be compared to how he would play at Spurs. Their team is set up differently, their style of play is different.

It just needs mixing up switch Townsend and Siggy every so often give the full back something else to think about at the moment if there is no overlapping fullback it's simple - just keep touch tight and don't let them get the shot away. At least if they swap, the fullback has to try and defend the byline every once in a while.

What utter ****e. Townsend cannot create assists when attacks are not in the box for the tap in. Or maybe you blame Bale for the fact that Defoe scored only 1 league goal in the second half of last season or that Ade did **** all last season. Yeah **** off our best player today, sure you are entitled to your opinion but it is utter tosh

Defoe needs the ball played to feet, not in the air. Is this rocket science? Townsend isnt the only player to blame for Defoe not scoring, quite true, but when did I say he was? By the way, Townsend didnt contribute any asists for Soldado either did he? So right back at yer. I guess you're another poster with a particular player's poster on your wall, thus explaining the angst in your reply.

In the first half yesterday Townsend crossed 3 good balls low across the penalty area instead of turning in and shooting for a change.
Defoe didn't anticipate where any of them where gonna be, he just kept on running, he didn't gamble. He never does. He never scores those goals.

If it is true that we have only scored 33 goals in 23 PL home games under AVB then this statistic is truly woeful, especially when last season we had the worlds most expensive forward in our ranks!

Agreed. Despite Eriksen and Soldado we're actually taking even more long range pot shots this season than last, so far 57% of our shots have been attempted from outside the penalty area which is the 3rd highest proportion in the Premiership behind only Palace and Fulham. In contrast to Emirates Marketing Project at 39%, L'ARSEnal at 40% and Liverpool at 43%.

So it's not surprising that we're missing the target more than most of the other CL contenders, thus far this season only 45% of our shots have hit the target compared to 60% for Liverpool, 58% for L'ARSEnal and 50% for Emirates Marketing Project.

Of those 41 shots that actually hit the target 23 of ours (56%) have been straight at the keeper in the middle of the goal, compared to free scoring L'ARSEnal (11 out of 42 = 26%), Liverpool (11 out of 40 = 28%) and Emirates Marketing Project (16 out of 43 = 37%) who have been much better at finding those corners out of the keepers' reach...

I am not a JD basher, but in the Chel$ki game and against Wet Spam he had three GOOD scoring chances and scored none. Hopefully now he'll stop talking himself up and start converting chances against good teams.

Strange thing is Defoe tends to score those same one-on-one chances in Cup matches. But he seems to lack confidence to do so in league matches. Not sure why. Maybe he can't handle the pressure in league matches ?

We keep coming inside off the flanks and teams are on to us. Lennon on the right and Townsend on the left - with Eriksen behind Soldado - should allow much more width and options in attack.

West Ham were able to defend well against us, Norwich and Cardiff weren't. Yet to see anyone complaining about the inverted wingers give a good explanation for this.

West Ham played without a centre forward. They were therefore able to pack central midfield with an extra man. This then nullified our inverted wingers who kept cutting in and at the same time deprived Eriksen of any space.

With two right footers on the left flank and a patently injured/knackered Walker, we just didn't have any natural width and were far too narrow. We thus played right into West Hams game plan.

Plus, we were tired in the second half thanks to taking too many first teamers to Anji. Dembele said as much in his post match comments. Massive mistake IMO and should not be repeated in the EL until at least the QF of that competition.
