Looking back on the Norwich game yesterday I have to say the only negative I could find was Walker. I've always been a supporter of his in the hope he'll continue to develop but I am beginning to believe the guy only has speed and willing to his game. His passing, crossing, decision making and positional sense are all too often called in to question in my mind and have been really since his break through season. Yesterday his passing was telegraphed too often, his crossing was poor rarely lifting his head up. We dominated Norwich and he was able to show the attacking side of his game but in a side showing the quality we did yesterday his lack of ability stood out to me.

Danny Rose's pace will help us too, good to have two full backs with pace. I can understand the criticism of Walker. He has the talent but too often fails to prove this.
He's almost like the smart kid who goes in to an exam and forgets how his pen works so barely writes a few sentences and in panicking he smudges the ink on some of that which he does write. But, there's enough salient points there that prove, yup, he does know his stuff now why can't he just prove it all over the exam paper?

He's got an annoying habit of bundling the back of people when there's no real danger (and he's not in a position to actually win the ball) to give away really stupid free kicks. Really big pet hate of mine, you'd think that players would learn that in certain situations you cannot get to the ball and as soon as the player feels any contact into his back he will hit the deck.
It feels like something that one or two players in recent memory seem to have done, think Livermere did quite a few times and I'm sure KPB did a lot in his brief time with us.
This is a fairly simple improvement to his game but one that would make a difference, you'd think cutting out giving away stupid fouls would be much easier than fixing problems with positioning etc.

Thats a very good point IMO- I think that's why AVB prefers Rose to BAE. He likes his fullbacks to be quick to cover oppositions counters. especially as our 2 CBs at the moment are not very fast (Daws and Verts)
I think for big games, I'd prefer to use Kaboul at right back instead as defensively, he'd be a big improvement and possibly in attack as he'd give Townsend or Lennon a chance to play more and would be an extra beast to add to the mix for setpieces. In lesser games, Walker should be fine but he needs to learn how to deliver a cross if he is going to be rated mainly for his attacking play.
One moment that made me want to headbutt a brick wall was when he was in the corner, I think it might have been Paulinho down there with him, Paulinho does well to get it to Walker on the by line, and then Walker flicks it back to him when quite obviously Paulinho would be in an offside position. Sometimes you just think, use your head for just 1 second.

Yeah, that was pretty facepalm... Looked like Paulinho thought so too at the time.
I only watched the game on tv, so difficult to always know what's going on in the box in those situations. I'm quite happy to see us being patient in those situations if a good cross isn't on. With Soldado, Sig and Eriksen the most likely targets in the box a cross just to get the ball in the box isn't always a great idea. Our players have to try to look up and see if a good cross is on or not.
Walker was shambolic last year, and not much better the year before, but this season, he's been good - albeit pretty meh against Norwich.
For the first time there's been genuine improvement in his passing and awareness.
I never thought there was any prospect of him being anything other than a liability.

Agree. He is not top 4 premiership standards and is our weak link. I couldnt find one thing to say about him on Saturday that was good. He has pace, and that is it.
He cant cross, he cant pass, he gives away needless fouls and he cant tackle very well. Just think we can upgrade massively on him and for all the possession he has, we could score more with a decent right back that can cross first or make a decent pass.

Naughton's improvement this season seems to have gone under the radar. Last season he was mostly played out of position on the left, often getting caught out of position or giving the ball away needlessly.
So far this term in the Euros he's been used in his more natural position on the right and has looked that much more impressive. He's already more skillful on the ball than Walker and is a decent tackler. Going forward he can occasionally show surprising vision, as in the first game against Tbilisi when having won a tackle he lofted the ball sweetly over the defence to put Townsend through, enabling him in turn to lay on a perfect low cross for Paulinho's goal.
Not saying Walker isn't the best choice long term but if I were in AVB's shoes right now I'd be sorely tempted to give Naughton a run out in the league, see how he goes.

Walker is and remains our first choice right back by some margin.
The last couple of months of last season carrying into this season has been his best period in a Spurs shirt imo. He definitely deserves to keep his place to try to keep improving. If he has another drop in form like he had at the start of last season then I could see Naughton being given a go in the league, but at the moment Walker is doing well and he's becoming more stable and consistent.

I'm a little bit baffled by the Walker hate. I didn't think he was that bad against Norwich, average to good IMO. He certainly didn't deserve some of the vitriol spewed out in the match thread. Are Walker's misplaced passes worse than anybody else?
I think he's just in a cursed position. I've never known this board (or previous iterations of it) to have a rational attitude to our first choice right-back.
