Surely a major factor is Poch would rather tinkle off Wimmer than Dier (not that he wants to tinkle either of them off)?
My prediction is that he plays tonight, gets torn to pieces because of a lack of match sharpness, then gets hounded out of the club by angry fans and media claiming he's not good enough. He will then complain to the media in two years time that he was never given a chance and has now found his spiritual home at a new club, before scoring against us in an important game and whipping his rooster out in front of our fans.
I thought Wimmer did well Saturday. It was quite an act of faith from Poch to throw him into that game, a strange system, and importantly playing in the centre (the most important part) of the back 3.
Playing 80+ minutes on a yellow and there being no mental repercussions after the OG were good testaments of his character too.
I hope we can find enough minutes for him this season to keep him happy, because I think he'll be eclipsing Verts before long.
We will do, after Christmas we will be in the Europa imo and I hope that we actually prioritise it tbh. I think the top 4 will be a proper scrap and Chelsea/Liverpool having that clear advantage is something that will really pay dividends after Christmas. We have a small squad as Poch pointed out this morning and probably the least quality depth of all the challengers but we can have a go on both fronts but for me I would be very happy if we ended up 6th if we could win the Europa League.
Wimmer should play all the Europa games and the CSKA game if we are out by then anyway plus it wouldn't be such a bad thing to rotate him and Vertonghen throughout Jan/Feb which are busy months with the FA Cup coming into play.
I mostly agree with you here that Wimmer played well. Although I would argue that the two on the right and left side of the partnership are the most important players when playing 3 at the back with the central role in the three is the easiest to play in terms of positioning.I thought Wimmer did well Saturday. That would be nice and i hope that is what we will do. Lets try and win something.
Couldn't agree more. We have sold out in competitions to prioritise qualifying for the CL and for a number of factors, we are not quite up to par for it just yet. Lets actually win something and at least by winning the Europa you get a top trophy and a chance of doing yourself justice in the CL next season. I had a brief look at the top 2 teams in all the groups plus the likely fall outs from the CL and it won't have many real big hitters come the knockout rounds.
We could do it, we just have to believe and really knuckle down to it.

If Wimmer is indeed eclipsing Vertonghen before long then he will be a brilliant centre half as (IMO) Vertonghen is one of the best 4 or 5 centre halves in the Premier League right now and probably hasn't even reached his peak as a centre half yet.
Indeed.... Which actually isn't really that different from our 4-2-3-1 last season anyway.I agree with that, i do believe that if we do go down that route then we will see Toby on the right and Jan on the left with Dier in the middle.

There is no reason for us not to go for it in the Europa if we finish 3rd in our CL group. We would enter at a decent stage of the competition and I think we would be a seeded team so should get a decent draw. We have also (in theory) put a squad together for the CL so should be prepared for 2 games a week. Having gone out of the League Cup is also an advantage here in terms of fixture congestion.
Agreed. The OG was him trying to stop a Goon from scoring as he had one in front and knew there were some (offside) lurking behind. And despite it being a clear yellow, the way him made c0ckelin flop around like a salmon gasping for air was a thing of beauty (and the sort of challenge I do not condone). He just does the basics well and reads the game well
He is still young and inexperienced relatively and for me was great yesterday all things considered
Wimmer does look a bit on the 'cuddly' side.On the Tottenham Way podcast last week either Dan Kilpatrick (podcast host and ESPN journalist dedicated to Spurs) or Greg Stobart (pod guest, Sqwarka journalist, Spirs fan, supposedly with contacts at the club) was talking about Wimmer and why he wasn't being selected even on the bench ,with Toby being out. One of them said (I think it was Stobart) that the club were open to selling him last summer and that Poch has some issues with him, suggesting it was fitness, or weight issues, or something like that.
Hopefully total rubbish based on inaccurate info (and even if there were some truth in the summer it doesn't mean it is still the case now).
After the excellent job he did last season filling in for Jan I'd hope he does feature in Poch's plans although opportunities might be limited for him when our first choice CBs are fit. Thought he did well enough on Sunday and would like to see him given more opportunities, although hard to see where they could come from apart from FA Cup (assuming/hoping we can get through the CL group stages).
