Josh Onomah

First time ive watched him not in a Spurs shirt and he's impressed me. We are clearly not playing him in his best position, if we are going to give him game time can we please do so in CM as this is clearly where he should be playing?!

"He's looked a man against boys at times. He looks so strong, so physical," said BBC pundit Trevor Sinclair. "His awareness and his change of direction with the ball and his passing ability, you know sometimes you're talking about getting in uncomfortable positions and players panic, but he doesn't.

"He just holds them off, he knows how strong he is and his end product has been superb. I've been really impressed with his performance."

It's his physically at underage level that makes him good so good. He doesn't have any superior physicality in the premier league. He is frequently pushed off the ball and he doesn't know how to deal with it.

He is also played in the wrong position for us

Errrr not really. He's played higher up than his best position with us so far where he has less time and space but where his mistakes as a young player will be less likely to be punished.

Anyway, regardless, he's still a strong player. Maybe he won't be the strongest in PL games but he can still count on strength. He's a Dembele type. He can carry the call and he can use the ball well. He positions himself really well out of position. He's a clever player. He should be pushing Winks all the way this coming season.

Spurs fans seem to have a poor opinion of him but it needs to be repeated so he gets a fair shake and isn't spacegoated: his best position is deep midfield, not attacking midfield.

I didn't think it was just his physicality that made him look good today though (although being strong and knowing how to use that strength is a good trait to have). He looked very assured in his role. Finding space, moving into space, tackling, protecring the ball, moving play forward. And now we know he has a mean shot on him too

If physicality at youth level was all he had, I doubt Poch would have kept him so close to the first team.
I just hope we get to see him playing first team football (even if just the domestic cups) in his preferred position next season.

Yes really. In the Spurs youth teams he played in central midfield, not all players are comfortable in playing in a different position when they get promoted. Bottom line he looks better in his natural position

Impressed by him today. It's clear to see that he was playing in his favoured position. I've been quite negative towards him before, didn't think he has shown much promise at all, but he's clearly been playing out of position, so hopefully he'll get the chance in the Dembele position for us this season.

Not sure I agree he can be pushed off the ball that easily. However, leaving aside his physicality for a moment, what did you make of his overall ability on the ball? Because he looks to me to have it all. Not only does he look very comfortable in possession he also consistently uses the ball intelligently.

So even if at U20 level his physicality does give him an advantage, to me it looks like he has the basic skill set to at least have a decent chance of succeeding at PL level.

If I do have a criticism it is that sometimes he seems content to watch rather than get involved. Also like Dembele he sometimes attempts to take on one too many in front of his own box which can result in him losing possession in critical situations.

But hey, that is nit-picking really, all players have their shortcomings and anyway he's still young, still learning. It's the sum of his all-round contribution that really counts and today he showed he has the potential to go on and make it at the highest level.

I think he is woeful as a wide attacker... we called him anonymous

As a central midfield he is comfortably good enough to play men's football and looks heir apparent to the mighty Moussa

Really

Best player on the pitch for me by some way

You see players like solanke who plays for me with no brain and then you see Onomah who just controls he game

Would need to see more games of him 1) playing with older and 'bigger' players 2) in a uk league environment...

I thought he had a great game. There were periods where he just drifted through it, but for the most part he was close to MOTM.

The first 15-20 minutes he controlled the middle of the park, looked for the ball and drove forward as often as possible, then he went quiet. After he lost the ball 30 yards out allowing us to be countered, there was a period where he took less risks, made the easier passes and looked less influential. In the second half he got back on it and made more of a positive contribution. There were a few occasions where he overran it, usually after taking a little bit of a nudge, so I'd like to see him just keep it a bit closer, but that'll come with game time.

Without the ball though is what I wanted to judge him on, as for a player who started out as a #10 I was worried about how he would transition into a more defensive role. He's gradually grown into the role as the tournament has gone on and his positioning has allowed him to make probably the most interception's of any English player on the field. He has got better at tackling too, using his size (height not strength here) to hook the ball off of players trying to dribble across him.

This is the best i have seen him play ( as others have said he is obviously better suited to playing through the middle), i will hold my hands up and say i have seen nothing from him in a Spurs shirt ( so far) that would suggest he will become a regular here. However if he is given a chance to play in the team in the position he did today then he may progress with us.

I can see ( to a degree) why some are compering him to Dembélé which is a good thing because Dembélé is not going to get less injury prone or younger.
