Josh Onomah

We've also got to remember that he is playing totally out of position. From all accounts, he is best in a central role, further back by where Dembele or Winks would operate. Playing on the wing really doesn't seem to play to his strengths, especially when he's coming into a side with massive changes made to it.

I'll hold off judgment until he gets more minutes with a more settled team and in a position that is naturally suited to him. I, for one, will support all of our academy players and hope to see plenty more of Josh this season.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've been thinking he's a winger/side-midfielder, as he seems to be playing there often. Doesn't look like a position he's comfortable with.

Also, after watching some of the City/United game, it puts the struggles of some of our youngsters from last night into context. Pep and Klopp both did a good job of pairing each youngster with an experienced counterpart to help put them in the best possible position to succeed. The only youngster who really had that was Winks, who was playing next to Dier. Unsurprisingly, he was our most impressive young player last night.

For example, City used youngster Aleix Garcia with Fernando, an experienced pro. Same with Wijnaldum in with Grujic and Stewart. Both sides used young fullbacks with experienced central defenders and sprinkled in one young attacker with experienced forwards.

For us, we had an entire attacking midfield band of inexperienced players (Carroll, Onomah, Nkoudou) with only GKN really in his normal position behind a striker who is still struggling to find his feet in English football. I think if you replaced Carroll and Onomah with Lamela and Eriksen (which he did v Gillingham, for example), GKN would have looked a lot more impressive. Same goes for Josh. Wimmer is a good player, but he's not the real leader that CCV needs at this point in his career, and I think he would likely look much much better with Jan next to him, for instance.

All of which is a long-winded way to say that Poch put our young players under a lot of pressure at a hard ground, and all things considered, I think they competed pretty well considering the circumstances.

Amazing. A 19 year old kid is being written off before his career has even started. I think I'll side with the coaching staff on this one and trust that they can see something in him that is worth nurturing. In fact I'll go one step further and predict Onomah will be a Spurs regular for seasons to come (this is just as likely as any other outcome).

Rose has more drive in his little fingers and seems to be a far more aggressive character.
Onomah is a dude just waiting for the Range Rover delivery. He's 19 with a lot of growing to do mentally. He should go live with Danny

Sorry mate. That's pure supposition. Of course he has to mature and develop as a player. He's a kid.
And Rose has taken a fair few seasons to get where he is now and let's not forgot his aggression was a liability at the start. The comparison is pointless.

It is all mostly supposition on here..........
Onomah needs to get out there and get some life experience. The academy's tends to slightly institutionalise the kids. If I was earning £10k a week at 19 I would probably have been an even bigger idiot than am now or dead at 21.........
At 21 I did not know my ass from my elbow.

Most of his 25 appearances for the first team, and probably a couple for development/ youth teams. I just don't get why he saunters around the pitch. We've had other youth players, Jake Livermore for example (who I wasn't a huge fan of), who haven't been blessed with great footballing talent comparatively, but you know that they're giving 110% and maximising their chances of succeeding. Have no problem with someone from the youth team being crap, or less able, but coming into the first team as long as they're making the most of their ability. Ryan Mason - had decent ability, but probably not enough to be a regular at Spurs, but no-one could doubt his effort and therefore even those who didn't think he was good enough didn't question his application. Townsend generally worked hard, but ultimately was lacking in end product and a brain, but always worked hard. Onomah seems to be happy being on the periphery of games

Good. That means I cannot just dismiss your thoughts as those of someone rushing to a snap judgement from a few minutes viewing.

I haven't seen quite as much, but the majority of his first team appearances have been for less than half the matches and I do recall that he often did more than just sauntering around. I did get very frustrated with him on Tuesday though.

True but some posters take more suppositories than others. ;)

My point is you can't really tell what the kid is like from the way he plays. He may a level headed young man or a dingdonghead. We can't tell that nor is it fair to perform a character assassination on the young man because of any preconceived ideas about him. When I see photos of him in the press snorting charlie off a hookers tits I will make a judgement on his character, but not before then.

On the pitch yes he needs to be more attuned with the pressing style that Poch employs, but he is certainly not alone on this front. But more than that, at his age he needs training sessions with the first team and minutes on the pitch with better players around him to develop. In fact I would say the academy is the best place for him for many reasons, including a little protection from the life experiences a rich young kid can enjoy.

its a catch 22.
I'm not inclined to protect them and then when they make mistakes they may learn from it, like I guess most of us did on here.
But being cosseted IMHO removes the grit the make the pearl and does not turn out good footballers, just spoilt nobs like Wheelchair and Grealish.

Putting them on from the start, away at Liverpool, with hardly any established first team players in the team is hardly cosseting.

It seems to me that Poch works his players pretty hard, has high standards and is not afraid of having difficult conversations with players.

Good point. Hope Poch does gives them a hard time 'when' required.
I wonder if they ever use a bus? Hoover? Cook? Clean?

If we had won on Tuesday, would you be asking any of these questions?

Honestly you would think we were doing bad the way that some players are getting criticised....

We're in a great place at the moment, more so when you consider we have only played at the top of our game ONCE

Liverpool are flying yet are 1 point ahead

city haven't won in 6 games now IIRC.... There dog brick clearly, and don't get me started on all their new signings

Arsenal were flying too so far there a whole point ahead having smashed the mighty Boro.... Oh brick, they didn't

We're in a bloody good place right now and I'm sure there is a lot more to come. Constructive comments are valid and there are some in this thread for example but the negative brick can just do one

Actually I don't many know too many 19 year olds that do any of that. Footballers or not.

I'll hazard a guess none of academy recruits could do more than beans on toast, but to be honest why would they? I wouldn't if I had their money. These kids are already on a different path than you or I and have been for many years. If they have good people around them to keep them grounded all the better but it is not a prerequisite to being a good footballer. They will all likelihood be millionaires before they hang up their boots. Their hard knocks will come as their career dips for whatever reason.
