Jimmy Carr tax dodger

And Cameron talking about morals :ross: during the week where he left his 8 year old daughter at a pub on her own. What an idiot, just assuming his daughter had gone with someone else. So (what should be) the most important thing in his life and he couldn't take the 20 seconds to check that, yet he runs the country.

Im sure quite a lot of his friends use schemes like this, its the typical tory thing to do (and I wouldnt blame anyone for wanting to get more money). Its ridiculous the the PM is talking about 1 individual when thousands do it, and he is the man in power to close these loop holes.

It happened months ago.

Never got reported at the time, but it made a good story last week. ;)

My own thoughts on the Carr incident.

Unless income tax is reduced, the rich WILL look for ways to avoid tax.

When you factor in NI payments, it is quite a ridiculous amount to be paying to fund the public sector.

- GPs earning 6 figures and having 80% of their pension funded by the tax payer
- Final salary pension schemes (I wonder why these don't exist any more in the private sector? Oh yes, they're unaffordable)
- The huge welfare state
- Politician's snouts in the trough (subsidised food and drink, expenses scandals)
- Union officials (why hire 1 nurse when you can hire 2?)

No wonder people are trying to reduce their tax burden

A flat rate of tax is required.

The rich (like Carr) would then ultimately pay more.

In what other circumstance would this argument would be made though? Some of these people go beyond Carr and are outright criminal and they use the exact same logic. Why the fudge should we be trying to appease criminals? What we really need is international co-operation on this issue and a combined determined effort to close all the loopholes. When Britain had a 83% top rate, how much harder was it to avoid? For a start, everywhere in the developed world had relatively high rates too, over this period. So there was little incentive in moving your whole family or operation for a tiny cut. This also meant there was little incentive to fund these vast tax avoiding schemes we see today. We need a bit more of this thinking rather than trying to appease because at the end of the day, those who are being appeased tend to come back for more. We already have much lower taxes than we used to and this still isn't enough for some. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

I can't remember ever agreeing with anything you ever posted before, but got to say, that comment is spot on!!!

Hey Crawley, I've come over all a quiver. Is it me, or is it you? Seriously we all receive a premium for paying tax, it's called a civilized society.

Flat tax, flat earth. The country would go broke with this policy. Fiscal responsibilty I think not! "From each according to his means, to each according to his needs."

I dont think it matters what the rate of tax is. If it were 20%, people would still look to pay less. Carr and people in that scheme are paying about 1%, even if this was 5% these people would probably go for 1%.

The chances are Carr who has an Accountant/Tax Advisor may not have known the full details of the scheme he was entering into but rather being asked whether he wants to cut tax. Like I say I think we are all different. Some will be happy to pay less tax (legally) and some will be happy paying the full whack of tax. Im in the former camp - but I would be happy to pay some just not all that I pay now - personal feeling and view point.

This may well digress from the point but you talk about hospitals, doctors, nurses etc but I am paying through the nose for Private Health Care - so surely I should be allowed to reduce my tax bill to make up for that? no? I am sure someone like Carr has Private Health Care. Its a tiny point but thats just an example I guess.

I just think overall there is SO much waste in terms of finances that I resent paying the full whack of tax (I still do though)

Carr went to Cambridge. He knew the score no doubt.

I'm sure Golfball has a load of secret service and 4 cars in his entourage as well. Even the most died in the wool Labour voter can see exactly how this happened.

Oh come off it. Your love for Cameron is just bizarre that you continually defend the inexcusable and seem to take it personally.

I dont care how many people in the entourage there are, there could be 10 million, that girl has one dad and he is the only man in that entourage that is responsible for her. How hard is it to check she has a lift, 2 parents just assumed she was with the other... thats ok not really important to check though is it ?

I dont care about the political side here, I will go on record as saying I think anyone who doesnt care about their daughter enough to check she is safe has questionable morals and is an idiot for simply leaving a child somewhere. You have a daughter leeds and im sure if you have ever been in doubt as to if she is safe, you checked, because nothing is more important.

If you want to bring the political side of it back in, Tony Blair... not a tory but I also judge him for what happened in his family (press blackout but assume its common knowledge?) and Im probably being very unreasonable because he had less control and i dont know the circumstances.

Also, you think Carr and his like avoid paying tax because of some deep ideological resentment about where their money is going?

Taxation could be completely and utterly efficient, in every possible way and used only to fund the very needy and some people would still look for every possibly way to pay as little tax as possible.

When you say very needy - who exactly? I give money to charities etc 10% of everything i earn goes to charity and they help the VERY needy. This may sound insensitive but paying for the 'very needy' through taxes when im also giving money to charity seems a bit off putting for me.

Like I say i dont mind paying taxes because that is the price we pay for living in the UK but that is misleading I guess. Im not really paying just to live in the UK but im supporting others too - which I think could and should be done through charities rather than taxes and the government. I.e. everyone give what they feel like to the charities then let the charities dish it out based on what they have - but at least we have free will in giving out what we feel we could afford rather than what we are told to.

I am still unsure of what my taxes are actually paying for - for me.

Roads? wanna see the potholes on my road now?
NHS? I use private health care but still fine to plough some cash in there.
Police? I havent seen any police down my road in about two months.
Fire phalanx? ok never used it but could do.

(I am very very drunk at this moment in time so the above post may not necessarily make sense)

Any parent who leave their child in a pub is irresponsible i do not care what party they belong too or what job they have.
