January transfer window wishlist

Ok I see your point, guess we have different views on Verts ;) I think he is more than capable of handling most of the PL forwards. The reason Daws and Kaboul don't work is that they are booth to slow, thats why I think we need Chiriches in the middle.

Kaboul is far from slow, the bloke is coming off near on 18 months of inactivity. Once he is fully fit then he will rightly be the first choice CB pairing with Vertonghen.

He clocked the fastest sprint times of anyone at the club before his injury, against City he did look a little cumbersome which is understandable but once he got going his speed was still there, he sprinted past Aguero at one point. I'm not sure he'll get his place back in the side though, Chiriches has looked damn good imo but I'm not sure if him and Vertonghen would be a good pairing or not.

For me I would still just buy Benteke.

I think he will get his place back for the reason you stated. When he fully regains fitness and get a real run of games which hopefully we will see by the run in, he will be his usual imposing self who powers past or through people.

In terms of wishlist.........I am at a loss really. Difficult to know what we need when I don't know if we will be persisting with this style too much longer. I would love Mata and he really would change our game plus link very well with Soldado but they would never sell him to us regardless of what we offered.

Benteke would be a good and solid signing but I feel we maybe need someone who is going to dictate the play and move the ball quickly from deep, right at the fulcrum of the team. As to who that would be.......I have no idea.

Trouble is how long do we give Kaboul to return to fitness, his contract expires next summer I think.

Rumour is we are going in for Morisson in Jan, he is supposed to have a clause in his contract.

Compared to Andy Carroll, SWP, Torres and pretty much every player City have bought from within the PL I'd say so.

I'd rather Carroll at £35M than Soldado at £26M.

At least when he's not playing well he works hard and has a presence.

When he's injured, he tends to have a similar impact to Soldado.

Now, you will all laugh, but two players who might just be realistic and would go straight into the first-team:

1. Ashley Young - with Januzaj, Nani, Valencia and Wellbeck (and even Kagawa and Rooney) covering the wide positions, we might be able to push for a loan here. He's going to be desperate to play in the World Cup.

2. Demba Ba - might be a little hopeful, but there could be a deal to be had here. I'd be very surprised if they weren't in for a new striker, in which case Ba would become available.

Neither are world beaters, but a) neither are we, b) it's January - it's ducking and diving time (excuse the Young pun) and c) they're upgrades on what we have. Young can actually play wide left, and Ba can actually play up front on his own.

WUM surely?

Absolutely not. Terrible player and a cheat to boot. Completely out of his depth at United, couldn't believe they signed him. Not consistently good enough for a top 6 side and a definite liability without high quality players around him to cover up for his no shows.

Two words:

Bongani Khumalo

Edit: I see he's still at us but out on loan to Donny. Most pointless signing ever?

As opposed to Chadli and Sigurdsson, who can be relied on to put in consistent performances over a year?

How about Lennon on the left, which has rarely worked?

Maybe Lamela, Towsnend and Eriksen, who don't play there?

Young's fast, got a good shot and can cross. He's hugely predictable, sure, but that can be worked on. The ridicule he gets is simply shortsighted nonsense. He was poor last year, that's all.

Would not want him anywhere near Spurs, his diving is pathetic and would get him in far more trouble for Spurs than it does at Utd.

Chadli who's been in the league for 4 months and have played 4 games or so? Sigurdsson who's been with us for one year in which he got 12 goals and 8 assists (4 goals and 5 assists so far this season)? Lamela who has played 1 (ONE) game on the left, or Townsend and Eriksen who hasn't played there at all?

What we need, with the formation Andre is playing, is width from the back. Rose in the team would do us as world of good, imo.

Ashley's agent.....is that you?

Chadli of course needs time, and he'd be competing with Young for the left wing spot.

Sigurdsson, whilst a good player, isn't a left sided player - no chance. He doesn't have the mobility or pace to come in from the wing and link up.

There's probably a reason why Lamela, Townsend and Eriksen haven't featured on the left - that's not their position. We have to stop shoehorning players in.

We do need width from the left back, but that doesn't exclude the possibility that our left midfield options aren't good enough.

Young has looked far from the player you describe since he came back from his last injury at UTD. If we could be guaranteed an Ashley Young who could turn it on like he did in his Villa days then I'd agree but as of now he's not doing enough to play even in our side.

My shopping list includes a fast, right sided centre half who is comfortable on the ball and a left back. Would like to see us go for Luke Shaw but reckon he will be too expensive and we will end up with that young lad from France we were rumoured to be in for in the summer (at PSG i think). I have no names in mind regarding the centre half but have been losing faith in Daws recently and worry that Kaboul will never recover from his injury. Chiriches from what I have seen is more comfortable on the left of a pair although could play on the right alongside Vertonghen. My issue is that Jan may be off in the summer if we don't get Champs League, so getting in a decent player now will save us having to shop around after the world cup and also give us a pre season with a settled pairing.

I know other posters have mentionned the midfield passer but I honestly think we can find one from within our own ranks, be it Holtby learning the role or playing someone like Carroll there. I may be blind in my want to see a youth product become the player we need but Carroll does seem like a player that can dictate the tempo of a midfield, hopefully he learnt a lot from watching Modric every day.
