Jan Paul van Hecke

I think JPVH had a poor game but honestly Romero wouldn't have made any difference. The failing wasn't the defence being poor it was the entire setup, it was geared to fail. Romero may have just done better in certain individual situations but the net result would have been the same just as we saw over the last 2 years when he has played and we've put in similar performances. 1 good defender wouldn't save yesterday's performance.

The bigger worry for me was that we went for him in the first place.

He was crap at the WC too, he’s going to get battered by any decent PL forward he goes up against.

He was poor at what he's always been poor at -physical duels and aerial battles. His stats from last season bear this out - don't believe he was close to the top percentile in either.

We signed him to be the line-breaking passer in the CB pairing, with someone else being the battler. Problem is, Senesi has an identikit profile. Pairing them is pairing two physically sub-par passers as your CBs - you will be dominated by a physical side like Brentford, and so we were.

Should have started Danso, imo. Failing that, should have played a back three with Danso in it. This sort of game is not one Van Hecke will ever excel in.
100% agree with this

He played defensively how I’ve seen him play most times
That is the worry for me
Hadn't really noticed him at Brighton but once we signed him I watched him during the World Cup. Wasn't impressed one bit, hope he's better than the few appearances I've now seen.
