James Maddison

Obviously not, our resident fact checker and diversity officer has said that it's gross negligence so that's what it is. I've heard the board have been on a golf trip since the MGW saga and have just sacked off any transfer activity because they're moody about what transpired...

It's a damn shame though. Seems a really odd start to the season, losing Son ending an era for the club, firing a manager who won a trophy and now losing Maddison for the majority of the season. Got to feel for him.

With the likes of highly rated youngsters leaving on loan, you've got to think something is in the pipeline....
Can't imagine there not being moves in the pipeline. The way we've kept most deals quiet something could even be fairly close.

Effectively losing Son and Maddison for the season in the same game, our captain, half our "leadership group", our two most experienced and highest profile attacking players...

MGW was perfect because he was systemically flexible
He could genuinely play a 6,8 or 10 role and to a high standard
I can’t think of another but the nearest (it will Get sneered at) is Connor Gallagher IMO
Sure there may be overseas options but I don’t know anyone obvious now who hasn’t just signed for someone else
A player I really really like the look of is Nico Paz. He will go on to big things and como would sell. Would also be another argue to keep cuti company
Not a bad shout, Gallagher that is. Not sure if he'd come plus Atletico would try for Cuti in exchange.

I am massive believer that if you buy players for the long term, things take care of themselves. We were buying MGW for the long term and I'm hopeful that any permanent signing we get before deadline day matches that same criteria. Otherwise, another Pahlinha type loan could buy us more time.

I actually don't think we have the excuse this year that bringing in signings too late in the window will ruin the start of our season. Our squad is pretty much set and we're only finessing it at the top end. Getting the wrong signing could be the bigger problem.

I’m not sure we’re just ‘finessing [the squad] at the top end.’ It seems to me to be light in really key areas.

Extremely limited footballer on the creativity side. Essentially a hard working presser who pops up with some goals.

Our fans would realise very quickly if they watched him week to week.

Said it many times over the last 2 seasons. All of our good periods in games were when Maddison was playing well. It wasn’t always consistent but he influenced the correct end of the pitch regularly.

Thats a lot of goals leaving the squad inside 48 hours.

We must act now to replace.

I agree in principle at least. May be some exceptions, not sure this is one of them.

MGW seemed like the perfect mix between long and short term thinking. Before Maddison got injured and after. Because even before the injury we (both long and short term) needed another quality option of that kind of profile given Maddison's fitness issues and the lack of those qualities in the squad.

Not sure there is another "perfect mix" player out there we can sign. But someone who can be both a short term real solution and long term the right signing is massively needed.

I think the theme here is that there has to be that player in the marketplace that fits all the criteria of budget, tactics and has a willingness to join us. Sometimes, that scenario doesn't exist. We've seen that a lot with number 9s around Europe in the last few years.

In reality, if Spurs turned to a different position and spent the available budget on someone top drawer that is available (e.g. Zabarnyi) I'd have a lot of respect. It's what the top clubs have always done. I didn't hear the City fans bemoaning their club when Pep brought in more and more centre halves, even with the best defensive record in the league. They weren't worried about who misses out match to match, and seemed quite happy that these centre halves played in centre mid and full-back or in back three's.

Perhaps at this stage of the window it becomes about which elite players are available and add long term value. I'd still be all in for Zabarnyi, Wharton, Gomes, Rodrygo at this stage of the window despite us having options in their positions.

A left winger who cant pass, and can barely dribble these days?
He can do both, plus he can play more central. You can't tell me you watch all of City's games he's played in? We're 1 or 2 short in midfield, hopefully that gets addressed in the next week. If not I think we could do a lot worse.

I like Grealish but it would be back to signing a player whose career curve is on a downward trajectory.

We really should be looking at players moving in the opposite direction.

It would literally be a stop gap plaster imo.

I agree, that's why I said I hope we get the midfield addressed in the next week. Failing that, Grealish on loan.

It's a fair argument but then we're signing a young lad who is unproven because we're unlikely to sign a top player who is at his peak.

I'd go for Grealish personally. Think he's a huge talent with a lot to give and a bit to prove. Could be like VdV back in 2010.

He was never particularly very good. A few decent seasons in the championship. Then 4 years being City's token HG bench warmer, whilst enjoying the good life. Kind of a Paul Walsh career trajectory.

I'd have him beneath Eriksen in the desperation stakes.

They had at that time several playmaker and tempo setting players, were one of the best teams around at playing through pressure.

We had a real shortage of that even with Maddison.

To me it's more about balance and not having gaping holes in the squad, being able to do well in different phases of play and different game states.

If those things are in place what you say makes more sense. Just sign the best player that fits the system wherever they play and you'll move forward. But right now we have a massive Maddison shaped hole in the squad that needs filling imo.

He was great. Not sure about now. Not entirely convinced about his motivation for what would be a step down and game for game hard work and professionalism either.

Everton reportedly in for him, makes sense.

GB seems to really dislike him.
Whenever I've seen him I've seen a player who carries the ball well and is creative. His big let down has always been his finishing. Would have been a quality signing a few years ago when it seemed we were odds on.
I'm not saying all out get him, all I'm saying is if we can't get a couple in then he'd be useful for a season.
Personally I'd go for Eze, just hope we have a few lined up in the coming week or so.
