Yeah, there's a degree of revisionism going on there. I vividly recall an interview with Robbie Keane right in the middle of Bale's "cursed period" where he insisted Bale was going to be one of the best players in the world some day. And while there were a few raised eyebrows, most people felt he wasn't far off the truth. Even then.
No Bale didn't set the world alight for a few seasons; but most of us felt he would do eventually. That's really not the case with Townsend. I love his commitment to the club, and if he was willing to go into the season knowing he's a squad player; willing to warm the bench in the premiership (initially at least, while he tries to force his way into the first team); then I'd be happy to keep him. But he's good enough to be starting for Leicester or West Brom... and I get the feeling he's determined to play regularly, so that might sway him.
