Too many overhyped primadonnas all looking to score rather than pass to a team mate.
I think we had 4 decent crosses in to the box and scored from 2 of them.
The rest of the time the wingers tried to cut inside and set themselves up for a shot rather than playing for the team and crossing.

The whole match was a non event with 3 Villa players in squad they couldn't sell out and most of the players opted for the safe option when they had the ball. It's not easy playing against such tactics but the pace England played at was terrible and we never appeared to discomfort their defence. I've not been impressed by Tuchel.

Could not agree more, we have far too many players who are overhyped by the press and some fans.

Thinking there is "the problem" is the problem though. There wasn't one problem. There was and still is loads of problems.

I would say the deepest one is the positioning of international football within the football spectrum. It should be the main event, but it clearly isn't. The broadcasting companies in collaboration with our stupid bodies like the Prem League have made international football a second class citizen. So different from so many other major sports.

Southgate was absolutely one of the problems. He was a terrible manager and should never have been in that job. He didn't have the managerial skills and his own career was flailing. He didn't even bother taking his coaching badges after retiring from the game. He had to get special dispensation from the league just to manage Boro. He also devalued what it means to earn an England cap.

I was a home and away England fan for a long time and I could write a book on Southgate's tactical errors as a manager. I still have the World Cup semi-final in Moscow as one of the worst in game management I've ever seen. I could have shaken Southgate after what unfolded.

Perhaps another case in football where we want to find a single root cause but that isn't how this one plays out. It's not all on Southgate or Tuchel. I am wondering though whether Tuchel might not be keeping up with some of the tactical changes that seem to be happening in the game. I personally think he may need to find a little more directness. It's not just the lack of crossing.

Also surprised that Maddison only has two caps, really surprised actually. I know we are strong in that area but I can't believe he hasn't got more than that over the past few years....
 
Yes, Maddison has seven England caps.


Of our top England players Kane has 84 out 109 of with us, Dier 49/49, Defoe 49/57, Hoddle 44/53, Greaves 42/57 and Campbell 40/73.
