Don't know about you lot, but I find it hard to root for England whilst that odious Wheelchair is seen as our main man. It's as bad as when John Terry was captain.

Also , that GHod damn n̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶ servitude to the monarch anthem, constantly being sung by the fans during the game.

Treason! :D

Own Goal joins Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney as all-time England top scorer

When San Marino defender Cristian Brolli headed past Also Simoncini, he unwittingly made Three Lions history.

Wayne Rooney had already equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record after he converted a penalty to make it 49 goals for his nation.

Heading into the weekend England had seen 48 goals scored past them by their opponents - and Brolli's header made it a three-way tie.

With the spotlight on Rooney’s attempts to take the record against San Marino, it seems everyone has forgotten about ‘Own Goal’, who is also Arsenal’s leading goal scorer in the Premier League this season.

San Marino have form for own goals against the Three Lions. Defender Alessandro Della Valle scored two own-goals in his last two games against England.

England captain Rooney has already seen one own goal scored in front of him this season too, when Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker poked the ball in off the England captain’s toe at Old Trafford on the opening day.

Step 1: Build up expectations beyond what's realistic

Step 2: Watch England stumble through the group stages and exit early
Step 3: Media has a field day

Step 4: Mine's an ale and, what crisps you got?

I actually think if England played a workhorse midfield with Carrick creating from deep, Kane up top and Walcott wide fwd, we would be very effect and do well.

England will do what they always do, pretend Rooney is world class, expect free flowing football and easy wins "coz we created the game, innit"

Anyone else find it utterly galling that we've got Hodgson managing the most talented group we've seen for a long time? And yes, I'm aware his qualification record is excellent.

Hate saying it but Walcott is key to us doing anything worthy

I agree - he's an excellent right winger.

I'd love to see Sterling-Lallana-Walcott behind Kane, but that's not going to happen with Rooney as captain.

The four are so interchangeable that it would be a joy to watch.

Get Wishire fit and he will be a major player for England despite some trying to put him down all the time.

He'll be injured half the time anyway, but he'll be shoe horned into the side to play a role that doesn't work for him or the team. It's how it's done with England. Too many players that plays no matter what. Gerrard and Lampard retiring is the best thing that has happened for a long time, now it's just Rooney left.

I find it utterly correct, he's one of the few English coaches with the right attitude towards the job to do it correctly

also I don't think this group is particularly talented, Rooney aside I don't think any of this lot would have got into a Venables, Hoddle or Sven side, Walcott or Stirling maybe as they offer a specialist wide threat

He has been MOM in two of the last three games he played in.

He done it correctly last year? Finishing bottom of the group? The fellas a bungling imbecile.

Also, Rooney is set to become our all-time leading scorer tomorrow! How many World Cup goals again???? How many has he scored against San Marino too????

modern euro qualifying is ridiculous with so many mickey mouse teams, faroe islands, liechetenstein, now gibraltar, one thing's for sure though, no-one will beat greavsie's 44 goals in 57 appearances conversion rate

you tend to finish bottom in the group when the other 3 sides have better players than you

you can only score against the opposition in front of you, the issue is more with how many games there are now

I agree that he has the right attitude, but don't get the impression he has the right skill set.

Hodgson's success, by all accounts, is down to his meticulous training sessions and repetition. I can't imagine international football allows for that approach.

The following sums it up:

"Strangely football is a sport in which some don't expect to rehearse or practise," he said. "It's baffling. If you play tennis you will go out and spend hours and hours just working on your serve. If you are a golfer you will go out and spend hours working on one particular shot with one particular club.

There isn't anything wrong with this approach - in fact, I applaud it - but I'm not convinced it's suited to the time restraints of international football.

You're right in terms of those eras when discussing talent, but I'm talking in the last few years - McClaren and Cappello i.e. 2006 onwards.

Costa Rica? Ageing Italy? One man Uruguay? Better players no. Poor management yes.

Milner, Shelvey, Delph...midfield fudging dream team.

Just wish England weren't so boring. We could have a front 4 of Kane with Sterling, Rooney and Walcott behind, but no- too "risky".
