I am a little worried

Agree about Parker. The game has moved on and he hasn't unfortunately. You have to be good on the ball when playing the top teams and especially in Europe, the players who can't pass really do get shown up.

Hope not. Even last season Parker was a lot better on the ball than Sandro. I think having Sandro/Parker like players if fine as long as they have someone to pass to. Dembele wasn't it. Not sure Paulinho is going to be it either.

:ross:

Sandro is poor on the ball, you are aware of this aren't you? I remember when Parker returned to the side, Spurs started playing their best football of the season. That was no coincidence. Parker dwells on the ball too much, slows down the game too much but he also plays it short, simple and is excellent supporting players in possession. Sandro is a pure defensive midfielder. Excellent in the tackle (probably the best in the Premiership) but he is also wasteful and possession breaks down with him a lot more than it breaks down with Parker.

Replace 'Spurs' with 'Bale' and you are right.

As a team we were better before christmas, after January we relied on Bale to.. well bail us out because we were playing poorly.

Sandro loses the ball when passing more than Parker, however it's offset by the speed at which he releases it. It stops teams getting back which we then struggle to break down. Whereas if Parker gets the ball the opposition team may as well go for a fag break as it's not going anywhere fast.

It's also because Sandro isn't afraid to go for the more ambitious ball.

Not according to statistics - Sandro's completion rate was 85.7%, Parker's was 84%. I know stats aren't everything, but a) pass completion percentages are one of the more reliable and difficult-to-twist ones, and b) these stats support what I felt that I saw - Parker being more wasteful in possession than Sandro.

yep and with the way Parkers declined last season, imv, it would have been too big of a drop in quality to go from Sandro to him for any length of games this season.

last summer saw the arrival of 4 new first team players (as well as Sigurdsson) and the outgoings of 3 first team players (and a further 4 squad players)

that's a turnaround of 12 players from Redknapps squad

the season prior to that (11/12) also saw a turnaround of 12 players (3 coming in to the first team and 9 leaving the squad)

so far this summer we've had 6 leave and 3 come in - we appear to be on track to be at the same magic number of 12 come the end of the window.

Interestingly Walker and Sandro are the only Redknapp signings left in our starting 11. There are six AVB and three Jol.

I'm a bit worried about goals. I have no doubt Soldado will score goals, but will the midfielders chip in with enough?

Is Paulinho a creative player? He's been described by Tim Vickery as a "tropical Frank Lampard" in the sense that he pops up with goals in crucial times.

Bale was third highest scorer in the league last season and I expect Paulinho and Siggy will hit double figures. I don't know how prolific Chadli is.

the only thing that worries me is that we are gonna be so awesome that we are going to have a hard job keeping AVB

I am worried about all the knee jerking that will happen if we don't win every game at least 3-0.

Im hoping we'll be stronger defensively (with the strength we now have through the middle in midfield) and that will in turn mean we should have enough goals in us

You don't know what AVB's preferred starting XI is.

I am not surprised that Redknapp doesn't have many players left in the squad. He didn't buy that many. Defoe and Kaboul have to be classified as his, because he brought them back after they'd left.

And most of the ones that he did buy were of the older generation so were never going to last that long anyway.

only fear i see is a cold start, but these set of players are going to finish the season much better for us. also big big difference whether bale stays or go for both

Lloris / Walker-Kaboul-Verts-BAE / Dembele-Sandro-Paulinho / Bale-Soldado-? picks itself I think as our 'cup final' side, though I expect AVB to rotate properly. ? is between Chadli, Siggy and Lennon.

Agreed.

Sandro isn't a great passer by any means, probably his most obvious weakness actually. But he's not terrible and I would much rather have someone that tries to keep the tempo up and tries to make purposeful passes rather than someone who slows us down and who plays a way too many unnecessary passes.

Especially seeing as we don't have Modric anymore. He could compensate for a lot, very few players can.

You think AVB is going to pick BAE?

Also what makes you think AVB will rotate? He didn't last year, and players tended to come in due to injuries. Why will it be different this season?
