Hugo Lloris

The issue, i believe, is that the goalkeeping position has fundamentally changed in the last 3/4 years with the invention of the sweeper keeper and its importance in modern day top level leagues and tactics. It will take years for keepers to cone through with the skills required. Its like asking Son to play centre back, he may do it with some accomplishment, however, it is not his natural position all way of playing.

Until keepers come through the academies and get taught how to properly play the sweeper keeper, and it becomes part of the nature, we're not gonna see a glut of amazing goalkeepers, anywhere in the world, there are always exceptions to the rules of which there are two in this league at Liverpool and Emirates Marketing Project.

You look at Hugos mistakes, and they generally all come from playing the sweeper keeper role, similarly, you look at the mistakes of many other goalkeepers, and they generally come from the sweeper keeper positions.

Lloris was the original sweeper keeper when they first became a big thing about 12-13 years ago. That was his thing. What AVB needed to play a high line that Friedel couldnt do.

In fact sweeper keepers have been a big thing since the backpass rule came in in the early 90s

Early Lloris was amazing wasn't he, So quick and alert to coming off his line. Feels like a proper old school keeper by todays standard though doesn't he.

Still pulls out worldies every game though!

His saving was still at a very high level but apparently it has statistically regressed
His his kicking is horrendous

They're not just from the sweeper keeper role, which he doesn't do as much as he used to e.g. goal he gave away against Arsenal.
He doesn't do the sweeper keeper role near as much as he used to, I think that's a combination of playing deeper since Poch left and Lloris not being as brave or as quick since his injury.

We knocked that on the head years ago, early in the Poch years I'd say.

See Carragher was having a go at him. "He makes too many mistakes"...

Has Lloris made more mistakes than other keepers in the league? Saw Ederson have an absolute shocker against Utd recently and Alisson helped give Leeds a goal. Both of them have had a couple of bad spells over the last 12-18 months.
At least he doesn't spit at kids you scouse clam.

We’ve been linked with Oblak haven’t we? Don’t watch a lot of Spanish football but he’s the best keeper I’ve seen in the last 10 years. One of the few I’d consider over Hugo.

Get the impression that it’s about as likely as Rivaldo to Spurs in 2002 or whenever it was. Then again, Klinsmann…

Was thinking pickford is in his last year next summer. Bring him in and let forster go. Then let him and hugo fight for first choice.
I don’t want to see another season of Hugo after this one. He is clearly on the decline, he has served us brilliantly and deserves to go out whilst his stock is still relatively high. Brentford keeper or similar standard would be fine, would rather not Pickford….

He has a problem now where he starts to come… stops and then goes static
He did make a good save first half of the sixth lad but it would have been a comfortable save if he was fully committed

Makes great saves but unfortunately the mistakes are coming more frequently now. Like @harr1984 I wanna see him go stock high as for 4/5 years he was genuinely world class and for a couple of seasons one of the top three in the world.
