But he did do similar in the actual World Cup Final itself, so perhaps the little 7 year old goalkeeper saw it and thought “wow, one day I want to hold aloft the World Cup and mess up Cruyff turns, just like my hero, Hugo”

I’m not advocating playing it long. But we have a keeper with very limited technical ability when it comes to his feet. Why can’t he pass it/chip it to Aurier/Rose so at the very least the ball is not ping ponging around our own penalty box? I don’t see what reward possession is if you’re surrounded by the opponent pressing you. Surely passing it to rose or Aurier for example and at worst the ball going out for a throw in is better than what happened yesterday? It’s just a totally laughable and avoidable goal to concede.
 
After the goal he just kept it simple, and pointedly came to the fans at the south stand to clap and kinda apologise - he said as much how tinkled he was at himself in the post match interview. We always was worried when we play it out of the back, and that was the worst eventuality...

Thank GHod we managed to score, regain the lead and hold it despite being down to 10 men.

Apparently Poch tells him to play that way, so it's hard on the guy.

I've been in situations where I've had to put individuals working on my team in roles they're not good at, for the benefit of the collective. The only rule of leadership there is that you front up and take the blame if they struggle - it's your call, not theirs.

Poch doing that mollified my view of Hugo's struggles, but I desperately hope Poch sees that we can't afford this from Hugo. It isn't good for him, for the team, or for Poch. It might be a way to toughen the team up and make them more press-resistant, but it's coming at the cost of endless chances and goals conceded that we really can't afford at this vulnerable moment.
 
If you don’t want the team playing hoof ball, you don’t want to see anyone hoofing it.

And Hugo’s setting the tone despite getting the biggest bills.
 
Not sure why people are making this such a black or white argument; either hoofball or play out from the back. Our second goal from yesterday i.e. hoofball shows we can be direct at times when we want to be and it can be successful. I don’t think anyone is saying lloris needs to punt it down the field but I’d rather he look for the full backs or someone in midfield than attempting a cruyff turn in the 6 yard box and passing it to a marker Jan or Toby.

exactly, there is a time and place for both imo

ultimately, he can do what he thinks is best as long as he doesn’t fudge it up

Disagree. I think those attributes are the bare minimum in anyone from Sunday League up.

Talent and intelligence makes the difference from there.

Not at all. Having seen some of the lardarses and bottlers that have played for us over the years (a top flight team, no less), I have enormous respect for someone who brings a powerful physical presence and a determination not to let opprobrium and often grossly unfair criticism get in the way of doing his best for his team-mates.

I mean, we were the soft, tidy passing Southern fairies who would regularly wilt when handled roughly not too long ago. Intelligence and skill didn't really help us out of those times. Steel did. Sissoko brings it. Other players on the team don't.

The vast majority of the time he does play fairly simple passes. It's not like he's attempting Cruyff turns all that often.

If we ask him to keep it significantly simpler we will be easier to press into long balls. It won't turn us into Stoke, but for me our ability to play through pressure is already an issue for us.

Obviously Pochettino thinks that the benefits of being harder to press into long balls outweighs the risks of conceding the odd goal from a mistake in our build-up play. I agree with him.

We do succeed with long balls at times. Part of the key to that success imo is being difficult to press, meaning teams will have to commit more players to pressing, leaving more space for our attackers when we end up playing it long.

Again, have to disagree.

I've never once wished any of our players were a bit more like Sissoko. On the contrary, every time I see Sissoko play I wish he were more like the footballers in our team.

Your right we lack a proper leader on the pitch, its not Lloris fault that he is named capt ( that is down to Poch) but he is too far removed from a lot of the action to effect it. IMo we need someone like Dier to be in among the play to be the leader/capt.

Yeah I think one of Dier, Harry or Lamela should be captain. All three have drawbacks though. Harry is a bit removed from the play himself while the other two don't play enough. Jan would have been my other choice but there's a lot of smoke around him at the moment (and I don't mean him shagging Eriksen's missus).
