Hugo Lloris

TWENTY years?!! wow cant be that difficult i hope...

so going back to 1990? that adds alot of possibilities...you sure you dont want to shorten it? and considering your mentioning guys that came to popularity on in this millenium i can see why you would hink van der saar is great.....a wild guess and i would say you're a young man

but either way...i'l give it a go

Best two keepers I have EVER seen (and admittedly I don't really know what was on the world scene before the mid-90's) were head and shoulders above any other keeper. Peter Schmeichel & Neville Southall. Southall was probably more natural and a better shot stopper (unbelievable reflexes) but Schmeichal edges it for me due to his sheer presence and his ability stop one on ones was simply awe inspiring.

Best keeper I have seen in a Spurs shirt (Jennings was before my time) was Ray Clemence, who was also the second best English keeper I've seen. In fact Peter Shilton & Ray Clemence are way out on their own in terms of what I've seen from English keepers.

As for Van Der Sar, I do think he was a very good keeper but people focus on Utd a bit too much. He was in the doldrums before that and had a reputation of being mistake prone. Which is a big reason why he ended up at Fulham when theoretically in his peak. That said, he was a very good keeper and I couldn't argue too strongly against someone who rated him above Friedel because I do think it's very close.

Barthez should not comment on a player thats still playing at the top level at the same age as him. Funny as they only have a month difference. Both born in 1971.

But its just the honest truth. You dont buy LLoris to put him on the bench in the league.

I immediately regretted writing twenty, but typing on my phone I couldn't be bothered with editing. And yeah, I'm not the oldest on here for sure, but old enough to know that Van Der Saar was class. ;)

No, that would be 1992, but let's say fifteen years, 1997 until now.
Well, popularity wasn't really what I was aiming for, I was saying in terms of skill and consistency.

Kahn I forgot, he was class, Frey was decent. Paliguca and Zenga I guess was before my time.

Give it a go, give me a decent list of keepers you think were/are better than VdS during the last fifteen years. They don't have to play now, but must have played at least ten of the fifteen years.

There aren't that many better than Van Der Sar. Sir Alex is a better judge than anyone on here.

GHod i hate that line even though its true. LOL

you know what, i'm going to remember that one next time you have an opinion. i wanna see how often yours falls in line with every professional manager

this you might have me here. i cant think of that many and the ones i can think of i dont think were even great anyway

buffon, casillas, friedel, given about 3 years ago, just like you said

but also reina (how far back does he go?)
Jaaskelainen
Tim howard
cesar

crickey i'm really scraping the barrel

can i get out of this by saying that he was a good solid keeper but not a great one

actually.....i have an outrageous statement here coming next...........i think vorm is or at least will be better than Van der saar. I think his height is the only thing blocking him being kidnapped right now...but its isnt long before he's off to a top club

Van Der Sar was a very, very good goalkeeper. But what seperates him from the very best was that he wasn't a really commanding presence. When I think back at Kahn and Scmeichel I remember two half psychos scaring the s*it out of everyone on top of being very good at just about everything a goalkeeper should be good at. I've never seen anyone screaming their defence into shape like Scmeichel did, when he shouted, the players listened.

I think buying Lloris in this transfer window was a big mistake especially if we had no plan to start him immediately. He is no.1 for Lyon and France. He is not going to accept being no.2 to a 41 year old goalkeeper. We should have waited until January. I think Lloris deserve to be our No.1 goalie as he comes with a proven quality and is much younger. Eventhough Friedel doesn't make many mistakes but his reflexes is getting slow. I am convinced a younger goalie like Gomes and Lloris would have saved the goals we conceded against Norwich, WBA and Reading.

Would say Buffon and Casillas have surpassed them.

Sad to not see Claudio Taffarel in any posts. Best keeper in the 90s.

Taffarel! Of course. He would be on my list too.

I would personally put Buffon and Casillas in the second tier, but as a keeper myself, that may have to do with my age. Being in awe of the keepers on my list at a young age maybe. With Buffon and Casillas, I have a an opinion of, 'yep, awesome. However, seen it all before'. No question at all on their ability and they have been consistently in the top 2-3 keepers in the world for the last 10 years at least.

Tafarel was dodgy as fudge and Casillas is extremely overrated due to the fact that he plays for Real Madrid.

I think if we had waited till January, we might not have got him. If the chance comes up to sign a world class player then you take it. Hopefully it's not just a signing for the next few months but the next 10 years so I don't expect him to be number 2 for long. AVB is just rewarding Brad after some decent displays instead of putting someone in straight away who hadn't trained with us yet.

Shilton, Southall, Schmeichel and Zenga obliterate any other keeper I have seen in my lifetime.

I use to be a keeper at school and totally admired Schumacher (actually really liked the 1982 West German side). There were some top keepers in the 80's including the ones mentioned. The likes of Pfaff, Bats, Zubizeretta, Dasayev too name a few (although my memory is hazy).

He'd be at the bottom end of a Spurs current top 3.

I think Hart's a really good keeper and I'd have him over Brad all day. Now Gomes? Well, bluntly, I think he will go back to the continent and show everyone how he was ruined here for no good reason (unsupported when he needed it, he was actually IMHO a great goalie who's mental state became unhinged due to lack of support and the usual pathetic foreigner bashing the media like to engage in)...Cudicini? Nah. Not for me. Lloris? Delighted. Wanted him badly, glad we got him, he'll be in soon...

I definitely rate Friedel above the pony tailed fool (most over rated keeper EVER). Van Der Saar was quality and comparable. Jury is still out on Joe Hart IMO.

We could certainly argue that Seaman had 'that' defence in front of him for a lot of the time, and I'd accept that Hart needs a couple more years before he can earn his top drawer stripes, but he is an excellent keeper IMHO and I'd have had him (though I am delighted by Lloris)...
