Harry Winks

John Hartson in the press today saying that Winks is being overhyped and the at 21 he had done way more.

I think Winks is being focussed on a bit too much but Hartson should have a think about the change in landscape. Would a 21 year old Hartson have had the opportunities today that he had back then? I don' know that he would've.
Ridiculous comment from Hartson. Symptomatic of what's been wrong with English football for a long time.

Yes, the big strong lad probably has an easier time breaking in to the team early. Yes, the smaller player is probably going to need more time on average.

Hartson ultimately ended up striving to be average and failing. Winks has the potential to be a lot better than that. That potential is well worth a bit of hype when it's paired with good performances against teams like Real and Liverpool.

I havent rated him because he hasnt done anything. Like I said, all flash and no bang.

I have recognised he had at one time great potential, but I maintain he has done nothing with it - and as a result doesnt deserve the rather inflated reputation he enjoys today.
I have this converssation loadds, Wheelchair looked good but didnt kick on - he was fully fit a dropped by Bournemouth last year because that is his level now. I dont know if its Scum PR or just the hope he was going to be good but loads massively overrate him.

Wheelchair did have a bit of something about him for a while IMO, but injuries and bad life choices robbed him of a career at the top. He certainly did get overhyped but we are seeing a bit of that now with Winks too. It is more a symptom of the lack of quality midfielders in England that the press are so quick to latch the nations hopes on every up and coming midfield player if they show a bit of form.

Some things makes Winks stand out from that overhyped bunch. First of all he's a very well rounded player, he can attack and defend, pass and dribble, he's quite strong and quick enough, he's smart and seems to have a good attitude. Being able to play both as the anchor and as a box to box player in the same game against Real demonstrates just how versatile and well rounded he is.

Perhaps most importantly is where he's playing and who his manager is. There's just no doubting that we and Pochettino have excelled records at developing players from where Winks is now to delivering on their potential.

There's always the chance of stagnation and even regression. But I maintain that being excited about Winks is the best reaction.

I agree with most of that. Winks has the odds stacked in his favour at our club. His professionalism marks him out from players like Wheelchair.

I think that loan at Bournemouth last year burst a few bubbles, he was absolutely terrible and dropped from the first team after Christmas, when their results Instantly picked up!

It should have been his chance to get back on track but Instead he went backwards, he’s done I’m afraid and no matter how much PR BS Wenger spreads he’s no where near good enough for them (5th/6th best PL team). Hence why he still doesn’t play for them in any meaningful games.

Back to Winks, I'm glad he had a chance to face up to Modric I'm the CL. Apprentice vs master event. Winks did fine, but Modric still had a thing or two to teach him.

There shouldn't be any doubt now that he's ahead of Dembele in the pecking order. The Mouse did well when he came on however until he can get on the pitch regularly, week in week out, its difficult to consider him as a real option. Think we need another CM option in soon as an alternative to Winks, and then whatever we get out of MD is a bonus

I love it when like Dele before him a young player comes along and makes himself undroppable almost amidst a host of senior more experienced players.

I still think a midfield trio of Winks, Alli and Eriksen is too weak defensively.

I felt we got away with it this evening. A number of times we were caught short with huge empty spaces between defense and midfield.

We also struggled to win back possession... If we're going to persist with young Harry, we need someone with steel/discipline to play alongside him.

Dier, Wanyama or other.

When Toby is back Dier can add heft to midfield and when Big Vic is back there will be more choice.

Given our injuries this year it’s goung very well. Could be better, but it’s going well. And no escaped goats not giving 400%.

At home to Dortmund we got away with much more, that was with Dembele and Dier in midfield.

Did we get away with things at home to Liverpool?

Some of our best performances and results this season have come with Winks as our deepest midfielder. I don't think that's because we've gotten away with things.

Winks did exceptionally well defensively yesterday, intercepted and blocked passing lanes and read danger time and again. He's definitely not a defensive liability at all.

How good was his overall performance last night? I thought it was his best game for us yet. Completely bossed it throughout. Such a clever player. Thrilled to have him on our books, especially since he's a yid and one of our own. :)

As he has been all along. Definitely a very astute player defensively too.

He's good at reading the game, but he still needs to work on his tackling technique. He does have a habit of charging in too quickly and getting turned.

But we had more possession away to a team that actually had much more possession when they played us away

When people look at defensive midfield options they quickly forget that Barca don’t have a hard tackler, City don’t and one of the best in that role was Alonso who used to comment how in England we love a tackle more than a much more effective block or interception
