Harry Winks

Looks to me like a player with no confidence in himself. And not enough minutes. Playing like that, with this manager, will not get him more game time.

Yeah I think that’s fair. It’s also hard to come on like that and get into a game. Winks seems like a lad not happy with his current situation in terms of getting minutes so hes possibly not in the best frame of mind either.

I have sympathy for him but he was dreadful last night.

Agree with most of the recent sentiment unfortunately, just not good enough for Spurs. Think he will follow a similar path to Tom Carroll, upper Championship club player

He is a professional footballer, if he is going to spit his dummy out and feel sorry for himself for being out of the team then he is not going to make it very far. Get your head down, train hard and when you get a chance, don’t fudge it like he did last night.

I’ve said it before - he’d fit right in at Bournemouth.

I don't think he's an awful player but he definitely hasn't kicked on as I thought he would, when he was younger he seemed a bit more ambitious in his passing but he's lost all that now. I don't know if it was coached out of him or he's naturally evolved like that.

I'm happy to have him in the squad, not everyone can be at the level of N'Dombele and as cover I think he's good enough but also wouldn't stand in his way if he wanted to leave for more gametime.

My guess is it's nothing more than a spell of poor form allied to a total loss of confidence. We all know form is temporary, class permanent etc. Remember how awful Eriksen was in his last year for us and his first six months at Inter? Papers were full of how Conte could not wait to get rid. Having failed to offload him in January we now hear the Dane is right back to performing at his best.

Winks could probably do with a complete break for a while followed by a spell of hard work during the Summer. Back to basics to help him rebuild his confidence and reconnect etc. Pretty sure we'll eventually see him back to where he once was, whether for Tottenham or somewhere else. One way or another he will definitely be back.

I wonder how much effect the surgery has had on Winks, as he used to be more progressive with his passing but perhaps the accumulation of injuries has taken it’s toll and he’s never going to reach those heights again.

Class?

Winks has been mediocre for us for far longer than he was class. He was never even class tbh he just appeared like he could be and did have some very good performances.

I do agree that the injuries have hampered his development and he has regressed. There is the chance that he could get out of the rut because he doesn't lack technically it's all mostly mental in his case assuming he's playing the B2B role, I don't he's suited to playing DM.

Steady on fella, I was using the term class in a relative sense, as in he is much better than he has been this last couple of seasons.

Most players have brick spells at some time in their careers, some last weeks, others months and a few like Dele and Eriksen much longer. It's also true that for one reason or another some never get back to where they were.

Maybe, as @SteveAWOL suggested above, his ankle injuries have taken their toll on his ability but Winksie still has plenty of years ahead of him so we can but hope he will eventually get back to his previous level.

Was just about to post that. Athletico would be a great move for him

I've nothing against the guy, though I know loads on here cant stand him. Shame hat he hasnt progressed much over the last couple years given he's a Spurs boy and was on an upward trajectory before, but at 25 years old, being say 5th choice CM for us wouldnt be that interesting for him (PEH, Ndombele, GLC and Skipp all being ahead of him).

If we got the £15m-£20m mentioned in that article, and he went to a team like Athletico, it might suit all parties

In the words of IDLES frontman Joe Talbot, Harry Winks needs to 'grow some balls' and then he'd be a good player
