Bale is potentially the best Spurs player ever. We shall see..last season weren't bad.

But it is interesting to read how people view our players from the past.

It's amazing how different them goals are, and most are stunners. I love Vorm just standing there for the one against Swansea, so quick to strike with such little backlift and he still absolutely drills it in. fudge me Gareth Bale is good \o/

Bale is a brilliant player, and potentially one of the top 3-5 players in the world

The others mentioned were great players, but I feel mostly (except JK) were a bit more inconsistent than Bale. It's hard to say, simply because Bale is still so young and so much more could go right or wrong for him.

Re being a club legend, Bale is already ahead of JK (who used us twice and is still worshipped here).

Hoddle was not inconsistent IMO, he was a persistent genius.

From what age can you remember Hoddle at? From a deeper position, and in a far worse team, Hoddle bagged 22 goals in 79/80 and almost all of them were worldies and that was before Hoddle hit his peak. In fact, almost every single goal Hoddle scored was a worldie.

I love Bale, but he isn't the same quality as Hoddle was. Hoddle was the best creative/attacking player in the world bar one very small Argentine. Out of all the players I see today, Messi is better than Hoddle. Ronaldo is not, and Bale is not as good as Ronaldo yet. Hoddle played when the pitches were terrible, the stadiums didn't insulate against wind as much and where you had no protection from having the brick kicked out of you. If Hoddle played in the modern game, he'd be unbelievable and even more effective than he was back then.

I find it incredibly difficult to compare Bale with past heroes, particularly Hoddle. For the majority of Hoddle's time at Tottenham there were no live games bar the FA Cup final on TV. So what we tended to see were edited highlights of GHod on Match of the Day or The Big Match. sometimes Sportsnight, and sometimes Midweek Soccer Special. I was not lucky enough to go the WHL on a regular basis as a schoolboy until I was 14/15 in the early to mid 80s, so I reckon I only saw Ghod live maybe 20 times tops.. believe me he was good, and could spray a pass with so much accuracy, over short distances and long.

With Bale on the other hand you see every piece of skill replayed from 20 angles ad nauseum on Super Dooper Sky Sports Soccer Fest. almost daily. The boy is wonderfully talented, and is a rarity in that he gets the crowd to a man, woman and child up and out of their seats as soon as he has the ball with anticipation and expectation of brilliance about to be unleashed. Both match winners in their day... but to me Glenn still just shades it.

Genuinely interesting to see peoples views on Bale V past hero's, especially Hoddle. It made me think of these two goals specifically. Both against similar opposition, both start in a similar part of the pitch both with the same end result.

I saw Hoddle live a lot, every game he would have two players trying to kick the brick out of him and hardly any protection from the ref, for three years he WAS the best player in the world imo, I would be more than happy if Gareth turns out to be better than Hoddle but he is nowhere near yet, also Hoddle won things with us Gareth has not, great players win things, as Mabbut said Gazza won us the cup that year nearly on is own.

and there's much more to hoddle beyond that video. in fact i'd say that his dribbling isn't his best attribute,; it was his vision, first-touch and that he could find the top corner of the net with a chip that would befuddle everyone "in the moment". he was the most graceful footballer I have ever seen. one of a kind. he believed in the perfect strike of the ball - mind you in the middle of a scrappy game and greasy pitches - and saw it through with perfection.

bale is special too, but he is about power - so you can easily have comparisons with other 'power players' (e.g. cronaldo).

Christ mate, I'm a Spurs fan through and through, you think Hoddle was better than CR? 146 goals in 135 games for Madrid Ronaldo?

It's hard to compare the value of players from different eras with different styles, Cristiano is one of the best of all time, Hoddle was a great player, but not the same.

Yeah I am, the only negative I can come up with about Hoddle is that it meant that Ardilles had to play a far deeper role and it took a lot out of Ossies game, in fact Modric reminded me of Ossie, when Ossie first came to us he played in the hole and used to play little balls through the channels for the front two he was incredible, Hoddle imo is the best player to wear a Spurs shirt and I saw from Johnny White, MacKay and Danny onwards, incredible player, his level of performance and consistancy was good too.
