Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

Punto Pelota, a Spanish football TV programme, can usually be relied upon to produce and disemanate the wildest of transfer rumours and it seems they have outdone themselves on this occasion.

‘Agent’ Francois Gallardo claims that Tottenham have already agreed a €80m (£68m) deal with Real Madrid to sell their prized asset Gareth Bale this summer and that the move will be set to go through in late August, when the White Hart Lane side will have set about replacing the Welsh international and the Spanish giants time to sell a few unwanted members of their squad so as to finance the move.

Indeed Real Madrid would perhaps have to sell one or two of their big name players to help finance such a move given that president Florentino Perez has forked out large sums to bring in Spanish youngsters Isco and Asier Illarramendi and of course the La Liga side have been linked with moves to sell Gonzalo Higuain this summer, with both Arsenal and Napoli said to be keen on the Argentine.

Re: Gareth Bale

Another absolutely nothing story from the tacos at SSN

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with an approach for Tottenham Hotspur forward Gareth Bale.

Reports claiming that the Wales international could soon be heading to Spain refuse to go away, with transfer rumours sparked at the start of the summer.

Real have not shied away from the fact that they are always interested in bringing the very best players to Santiago Bernabeu, but they have made no official approach to Spurs.

Ancelotti has now suggested that no big-money bid will be tabled, with the Italian 'happy' with the squad he has inherited from Jose Mourinho.

He told a press conference on Saturday: "I am happy with the squad and I don't want to talk about other players out of respect for those who are here."

With Real keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to possible targets, Ancelotti has also been quick to play down any suggestion that Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic - a man he worked with last season in France - is another player he would like to add to his ranks.

On the enigmatic Sweden international, he said: "He is an amazing player and can play in any team in the world.

"He doesn't play for Real Madrid and I can't talk about that out of respect for those who are here, who are performing well."

Re: Gareth Bale

Nah mate. We could sign Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar and people would still find something to complain about. I've been following Spurs my entire life... I'm not old enough to have witnessed the early-60s glory days so to be perfectly honest, this is almost certainly the best and most exciting Spurs team of my lifetime. I remember the Hoddle / Ardiles years and the glorious cup wins, but as a team I don't think we've been this good in 40 years. I'm loving being a Spurs fan right now... I remember the dark days and the annual false dawns. Right now, the eternal optimism finally seems grounded in reality.

And yet a good 50% of the stuff I read from Spurs fans online is negative.

Don't get me wrong - we all know the team can be improved (and my position on selling Adebayor is obviously viewed as being negative by some). But the relentless negativity from some people is mind-boggling.

EDIT: Just to make it clear; this is not aimed at anyone in particular. It's just a general impression from the past six months or so.

Not yet you haven't. ;)

This is the best Spurs team in a long long time and Gareth Bale is our best player since the glory glory days of the early 1960's. They have a genuine chance of a top 3 finish this season. There is no way that Spurs can sell Bale especially to Manure. Levy should tell Moyes to get lost or words to that effect.

He has the potential to be i suppose, but Bale is not better than Hoddle, Waddle, Gascoigne or Klinsmann yet and thats just the 1980's and 1990's. There are a few other players we have had since the early 60's too that probably deserve a mention.

Re: Gareth Bale

Waddle? Klinsmann? Nostalgia getting the better of you there I think. Even the other two are very much debatable.

I have supported Spurs since the 1960's and believe me Gareth Bale is better than Hoddle, Waddle, Gascoigne or Klinsmann.

Re: Gareth Bale

Not sure it's right to put Klinsmann is some kind of 2nd tier. The others are flawed geniuses whereas JK had all the talent, physical and mental attributes to achieve everything.

Re: Gareth Bale

Considering the stuttering start he had, his meteoric rise over the past few seasons has certainly been remarkable.

We're all entitled to our opinion... but for me Hoddle is still the best player I've ever watched in a Spurs shirt. Bale's still pretty young though, so *if he stays for a few years* I might well revise that opinion (though I suspect he'll end up at Real Madrid next year and become just another one of their revolving-door galacticos and never be the club legend, remembered for the next 40 years by fans, that he could be). It's the nature of the modern game though... kids willing to trade the possibility of a historical legacy for a shot at temporary glory.

Spot on, for me Bale currently is the third best player I've seen in a Spurs shirt, Hoddle is first with Gazza coming in second.
Bale will continue to improve though and could overtake them both. It will be a travesty if we fail to win silverware while he's with us.

Better then the likes of Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza, Ossie.?, no chance not yet anyway.

Worshipped all of those as gods, yet I don't recall any of them produce such breathtaking skill so consistently game after game to single-handedly affect the result in our favour since a certain little lad who went by the name of Jimmy.

Just about old enough to remember Gazza in his pomp. He was breathtakingly good at times. All the players mentioned above won trophies, plural for Spurs. I would say Bale is probably just ahead of Gazza though.

Not yet. Gazza was an exceptional talent and a lot more consistent and creative than Bale. He didn't score as many goals as Bale, but nor did he play in such advanced roles. I would say Bale has surpassed Waddle, but in my opinion he is still behind Gascoigne and Ardiles and well behind Hoddle.

Behave yourself, Hoddle was majestic and the best player i have seen in a Spurs shirt.
