Europa League 2012-13 - QF: Basel (SUI)

Besiktas, who were due to be entered in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Europa League, are reported to have been suspended from European competition for one year by UEFA.
 
UEFA has suspended Besiktas from European competitions for one year and fined them 200,000 euros due to financial problems at the Istanbul club, Turkish media reported on Wednesday.

The move came after UEFA scrutinised Besiktas' accounts in the second and third quarters of 2011 and ruled that they breached articles of the ruling body's financial fair play regulations.

Shares in Besiktas tumbled more than 9 percent on the news to 4.29 lira.

Besiktas Chairman Fikret Orman and the club's lawyers attended a meeting with UEFA's disciplinary committee for a second time on Wednesday after the club was earlier warned about its financial status and high debt.

Orman said Besiktas would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the ban, but added he was not very optimistic about a ruling in favour of the 13-times Turkish champions.

"We will defend the club's rights until the end, and will appeal to CAS as the first step," Levent Erdogan, a lawyer and club board member told Turkey's Dogan news agency.

"I think it's a dramatic decision, and it will hit us pretty badly, but there's nothing we can do," he added.

Also being reported that Bursaspor, who were due to enter at the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Europa League but would have moved up to take Besiktas' place in the 3rd Qualifying Round, have also been suspended for one year by UEFA. Bursaspor, like Besiktas, may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
 
AEK Athens have lost their appeal against the Greek Football Federation’s decision not to grant them a licence. The restrictions imposed mean that AEK will not be able to take part in European competition. They were due to enter next season's Europa League at the play-off round. The other Greek teams, Atromitos and PAOK, will move forward one round and Asteras Tripolis will enter in the 2nd Qualifying Round.
 
Is it just bully boy tactics from uefa to ban all these teams from smaller leagues. 'Look how tough we can be', any chance at all of them doing the same to the likes of Emirates Marketing Project, Chelsea, Barcelona and real Madrid and the like when FTP kicks in?

Shall I hold my breath now?
 
The exclusion of Bursaspor from the 2012/12 Europa League has been lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Their exclusion has been suspended for a probationary period of 3 years. Besiktas’ case at CAS is still pending.
 
The draw for the 1st and 2nd Qualifying Rounds has been made. The 40 winning teams will progress to the 3rd Qualifying Round - probably only around 10 of them will reach the group stage to join Spurs.

In case of any confusion, that's Hibernians from Malta rather than the Scottish team Hibernian.
 
Glad to see neither of the Irish clubs were beaten in the first leg. Really hoping for another Spurs visit to Dublin this year! :)
 
Will AVB take the Europa seriously ?

Would be nice.

I know the challenge of making the CL spots are important, but the romantic in me wants to win a European trophy and It would be good if we took the Europa seriously.
