Emerson Royal

Kept Almiron out the game....literally:D

Doh!

He was up against Joelinton, who is physically a Centre Forward and he competed well. One of the things I like about Royal is that he is up for the battle and physical challenge….

Competed well, but thought his decision making perhaps left a bit to be desired. Perhaps just assuming that Joelinton and Saudi Sportswashing Machine wouldn't be able to take advantage is fair, but to me he was a bit rash and ended up losing some duels where just controlling the situation without going into the duel would have been better.

He's looking better and better, still settling but looks pretty solid and he doesn't mind a good tackle either.

I am not confident about him yet, was sloppy many times yesterday. Can accept that for his late return but he has to do better.

There are promising signs.

He obviously has a good engine.
Never shy to be involved.
Perfectly ok with physical battles (not saying he wins them all)
Comfortable receiving the ball even under pressure

I think in forward areas or passing the ball into those areas needs work but some of this will be building understanding with team mates.

Considering he's just 4 prem games in and the international travel before Sundays game...he looks more settled/integrated than I'd have thought he'd be. (I bet Moura has helped with this)

Plus....just 22 years old fellas.

Indeed. All very promising indeed.

With Royal (22) and Reggie (24), we could have our starting FBs nailed on for a while now. Looks like both are Top 4 standard. Certainly better than Aurier (lacking in defensive abilities), Davies (lacking in pace) and Doherty (lacking in everything).

I do feel Tanganga has warranted more game time. Was impressed with his commitment and even his attacking - which he's not a natural at, having trained as a CB. Tanganga's sheer commitment and determination always impress me. Of course, we don't get to see them train, maybe Royal is showing he's got more in training.

Considering Royal is in a new environment, he has settled exceptionally well. Looks part of the side. Looks comfortable. He hasn't done anything exceptional yet, but he's more than holding his own. Hopefully, Tanganga and Sessegnon get a run-out on Thursday.

I think our best four will be Reggie, Romero, Rodon and Royal. The 4R's.
Tanganga feels a bit rawer and more impulsive compared to Rodon and is very similar with Romero. He is excellent backup and competition for either.
Stillneed another CB, hopefully a taller one good in the air so to complete the skill set in the CB set. Don't need Sanchez and Dier who continue to make mistakes regularly as senior players and thus are a poor benchmark and example for the young ones.

Rondon as the only unknown is attractive. I think the truth of the matter is, Dier is actually the best of the bunch. Sanchez threatens to be good CB, but his mentality isn’t right. Isn’t commanding isn’t a leader and lacks confidence a lot of the time. He can still make it as a top CB but probably not with us. That said, Sanchez would be my 3rd choice.

We need Dier to do well because he’s the best we have to partner Romeo right now. I actually think Tanganga is better as a right back as he lack a couple of inches to be commanding at CB in a 2.

Plus with Romero (23) and Tanganga (22) and Rodon (23) we could have a very young back 4. I hope the last two get chances to stake claims for first teams spots before they get disenchanted. It’s good our team is getting younger again, think we need a young team as a club at our level with finite resources. The mangers who may work out for us may rely on youth and enthusiasm.

There's a lot to be said for a defensive unit who stay together for years. On the other hand, we've seen what happens when they grow old together.

Is Tanganga destined to never quite be good enough to be our first choice RB, RWB, or CB? If so, will be settle for a place on the bench? He's bound to get plenty of starts in the cups and as injury cover, but is that enough?

Rodon confuses me. Why isn't he playing more? Must look bloody awful in training.

I still wouldn't say no to an experienced CB signing. While Romero has allayed my fears to some extent, I do worry that the Romero-Dier partnership has a couple of big mistakes per game, which is fine against Saudi Sportswashing Machine but not so good if we want that CL spot.

IMO its because he's a low-block specialist, but struggles in a higher line
