Doing a Leicester

It seemed at the time that the crunch game was v Chelsea away but in reality we still needed a minor miracle. We were on 69 points with three games to go whilst Leicester were on 77 with two games left, so we needed to beat Chelsea just to stay in the hunt.

But Leicester went on to win their next game against Everton meaning even if we had beaten Chelsea and both of our two remaining games we still could not have won it.

We bottled the two games against Leicester too. That should have been the decisive swing, would also have broken their momentum.

Because we kept fudging up and not winning games we should have won.

With hindsight knocking them out of FA Cup in 3rd round replay proved to be an pyrrhic victory and it would’ve been preferable to pick up 3 points at WHL in January instead.

Plus there was that injury time defeat at WHL to 18th placed Barcodes just before Christmas, if we’d just won those 2 PL games then we’d have been ahead of Leicester after week 21… ceteris paribus.

The final nail was drawing 1-1 with West Brom leaving us 7 rather than 5 pts. behind with three to play. Plus Dele getting banned for the remainder of the season due to his sneaky and stupid punch on a WBA defender.
Grrrr!

The decision to hire Ruud seems mental in hindsight doesn't it? They got a bit carried away with the fact he beat them twice in that caretaker spell

At the time I thought he was mental to take it.

I’ve done a load of FA coaching courses in the last few years, and stuff he was doing at PSV was used as examples all over the place. His sessions and drills are very well respected.

Interesting to know. Apparently there were plenty of clubs after him, I remember Hamburg and a few others wanted him. Been a disaster though. Doesn't help they have a terrible squad

Even overspending to win a couple of trophies isn't enough for some.

There were a few reasons cited. The club were charging season-ticket holders £25 to receive a new physical card, rather than allowing them to retain the one many already had, giving dedicated supporters the sense that their club did not care about them.

City's player of the season and fan favourite Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was sold, in part to negotiate Profit and Sustainability Rules, with the financial management at the club, and the relegation, putting them in a precarious position with regard to the regulations.

A sponsorship deal was signed with an almost-unknown gambling company that have since had legal issues.

The lack of communication from the hierarchy, leading to a lack of trust.

Also cited are the lack of ruthless decision making, a confused approach to managerial appointments and transfers, and a lack of accountability, with the results of the internal review neither revealed nor leading to any apparent changes at the top.

The final point is the declining results and the financial inability to change that. From the outside, that may be the most difficult to understand.

Because right now, City sit 18th in the Premier League, and that's about their historically average position. No side has as many promotions into the top flight as City do, at 13. That, of course, means there have been 12 relegations.

They are, historically, a yo-yo club. It’s perhaps why there have been accusations levelled at supporters, telling them they’re entitled.

But the problem is the speed with which City have declined. No side in Premier League history had ever had five top-half finishes in a row and then suffered relegation as City did.

A team’s wage bill is one of the best indicators of where they should finish in the division. City went down with the eighth biggest wage expenditure in the league.
