Djed Spence

Agree that Doherty was looking good, however we have an elite manager now who wants to compete for the title. Doherty would have been good enough for where Spurs have aimed over the last however many years, however the bar is higher now. I'd be surprised if he thought that Doherty and Spence was good enough given how critical WBs are in his formation

Wouldn't have been my first guess either trying to understand what Conte thinks. I do think having wing backs that fit the system really well is more important than them being great individual players.

If Conte really wants Spencer could be that we're after another RWB in addition to him, meaning that Doherty and Emerson could be on their way out? Or perhaps if we're looking at another option that could also pay elsewhere or could be Doherty, Spencer and another option?

We do have some money to spend now, so if we're really going for Spence I think it must indicate that Conte really rates him? Critical role as you say.

It could be spence is loaned out to get experience.

As an aside, I think the practice of buying a player then immediately loaning them out should be banned anyway. Just feels like a way of the biggest clubs hoovering up the best prospects at a lower price without having to develop them themselves.

You are now limited on how many loans you can have (over 21 years old).

There is a rule which states you can't buy then loan to a Prem club - dunno how long it's been in place tbf

Tottenham have agreed a deal to buy Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, with the fee understood to be about £20m. The England Under-21s right-back last month finished a season on loan at Nottingham Forest, where he played a significant part in their promotion to the Premier League.

Spence, who was born in London and was in Fulham’s academy, is one of the country’s most highly regarded young defenders and was on Thursday named in the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Championship team of the season.

Forest had considered keeping the 21-year-old but he has chosen to join Tottenham. Emerson Royal was the preferred Spurs option in Spence’s position in the 2021-22 season, although Matt Doherty and Japhet Tanganga were also used there.

Tottenham’s targeting of Spence fits with their general policy of signing young talent with potential sell-on value. They abandoned that this month to bring in the 33-year-old Ivan Perisic, who is leaving Internazionale at the end of his contract.

Spence has held down a regular Championship place since December 2019, first with Middlesbrough then Forest. He made his England Under-21s debut in March.
