Destiny Udogie

Personally I’ve thought for a long time that our full backs are playing more traditionally these days.
Spence has been to an extent but if you check his heat map you can see hes still spending a lot of time inverted but it makes sense hes a right footer playing on left, hes naturally going to tuck in. Udogie we haven't seen until recently, but there's a marked difference in the spaces he's moving in the last two matches versus earlier this and last season. His lack of fitness is also clear, he got over played when he wasn't back up to full speed (Spence/Reg should been playing then), but there is a difference in the areas he took up against Frankfurt. It remains to be seen if this is an overall tactical evolution or just a one times needs must scenario.

He just needed a small break, after a lot of minutes after injury, he’s back and ready to go now

He was indeed, until the following injury. And when he's back again, he'll be back and ready to go....Until the next niggly muscle injury etc etc

Am I exaggerating it in my head or is Destiny just an injury prone player now? Maybe someone more stats savvy than I could provide context. With the degree level calculus required to understand squad HG / Club trained permutations I'm not an expert - But having an overseas player that only really plays one role and is seemingly available for half the time is a bit of a problem.

Udogie isn't a perfect player but he's the first choice LB by some margin, I can't help but think at this point in his career, to reach his potential you'd want him playing week in week out developing his game.

It's potentially unfair to single him out in a team that has many other players unavailable when required for varying reasons... But then I'm not knowledgeable enough to really call out the medical team either. We need the likes of Gill / Solomon to be fit so we can line up deals, I'd say Richy as well but then there's no forward available. Aside from money, football is also a factor to consider and in that case you've got Kulu, Madders and Solanke out who's also developed the habit of being injured.

He's never had any viable rotation option since he's been here. I think he's been run into the ground more than anyone, other than maybe Porro. I suspect that's the cause of his niggles.

It must be terrible being a footballer getting asked to play football. It reminds me of when I was working in a coffee shop, and these strange people kept on walking on to the premises and asking me to make various hot beverages for them, such an odd time.

Tbf Destiny could do with competition, so I do see your point but I would guess he'd still break down. It's for the good of the squad to get in a proper LB either way. But then again, I don't mind Spence or even VDV there, but the latter was out for large spells of the season. On your last count we have around 352 players in the squad, how do you go about making room for another out and out left back? It's off topic but we need two strong XIs if we actually want to compete on all fronts and it looks like we're struggling to put one together atm.

If he's being asked to play 60-65 games, and the optimum is say 45-50, that's putting a lot of extra stress on his body.

Id sell Davies (who i only see as a CB now, and we have 9 other CBs) and bring in someone like Mitchell or Chilwell

Would you mind listing out the 9 viable CB options you would like starting in PL / CL games?

They must be of exceptionally high calibre as the likes of Spence, VDV, Davies and Reggie didn't reach your viability detector when it comes to LB cover.

I'd say Romero, VDV, Danso, Dragusin and Vuskovic are viable now. I've not seen enough of Takai to know about him. And then two have obviously gone out on loan
